Fast Track And Warm Weather Lead To Hot Start To Masters Weekend

New Richmond, WI.  June 15, 2006.  With the temperatures running in the mid 80’s, DTRA Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds as well as a handful of Lucas Oil and local Late Models drivers made their way for a rare Thursday night race at the legendary Cedar Lake Speedway.  With nearly 100 cars here between the Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds, the fields were set for some great racing action.  The handful of Late Models were able turn some laps in preparation for this weekends Masters weekend races.  Some very quick and fast heats got us ready for some great feature action.

The first feature to roll out onto the track was the DTRA Street Stocks.  Jeff Heintz and Chris Peterson led from the front row, and Peterson took advantage off the front row starting spot as he quickly jumped out into the lead.  Heintz ducked into second and was followed by Mark Froelich and Chris Gullikson from the second row.  A lap 3 caution flew for debris on the speedway, but Peterson continued to lead out front after and was followed closely by Froelich who jumped into second.  Keith Tourville soon jumped into fourth and took advantage on Heintz’s slip in turn 4 to climb into third.  A lap 7 caution once again proved to be no help to Froelich or Tourville as Peterson once again took of into the lead until he lost the handle on his race car and spun in turn 3 and brought out our third caution on lap 11.  Froelich took over the lead after the Peterson spin and used the restart to his advantage and quickly jumped into the lead and that was all he needed as he led the last four laps to take the checkered.  However, after the race, Froelich was found to have been missing his muffler and was disqualified, making Keith Tourville the race winner.

The next feature that found its way to the track was the DTRA Midwest Modifieds.  Justin Schill and Lonnie Louschke led the field to the green form row number 1.  Dan Wheeler quickly jumped from his second row starting spot to make it 3-wide into turn 1, but he made contact with Schill and damaged his car and brought out the caution as he hit the wall in turn 2. A complete restart once again proved to be no good as Bryce Johnson got loose down the back stretch and a large pile-up followed.  After a long clean-up, a third restart once again was no good as a spin in turn 2 by Wayne Troseth brought out a third caution.  The fourth restart proved to be the charm and Schill was able to get out to a big quick lead over Bryan Siercks and Vince Corbin.  It did not take Schill long to check out on the field, leaving Alan Bohman and Siercks to do battle for second behind him.  Bohman was able to get by Siercks with three to go and finished off his good evening with a second place finish as he was not able to even make a challenge to the very fast Justin Schill as he took the checkered flag.

The third feature to head on out the speedway the DTRA Super Stocks.  Dan Gullikson and Mike Loomis took the green from the front row.  Gullikson took the early lead over Loomis and Tim Borgeson before a lap 2 caution flew as Ryan Aho spun from the seventh position.  Gullikson once again found the lead over Loomis after the restart and it was not long after the Borgeson was able to get by Loomis for second.  A caution on lap 5 caused our second caution flag to fly and that allowed Borgeson to pull up to the rear bumper of Gullikson.  Things did not change much up front after the restart as Gullikson took of into a couple car length lead over Borgeson.  The big mover was Dan Carlson as he was able to work his way from the 14th starting spot all the way to second as he got by Borgeson on lap 8.  The caution was not what Gullikson wanted as he got heavy pressure from Carlson soon after the restart and on lap 12, Carlson took the lead from Gullikson as they went side by side at the start/finish line.  Borgeson was able to get a great view of this as he followed the leader very closely in third.  In the closing laps, Carlson, Gullikson, and Borgeson all battled for positions with Carlson finish off his excellent run from 14th to take the checkered flag.

The final feature to roll out onto the race track for the evening was the DTRA Modifieds.  Dave Lear and Jason Miller took their fast hot rods to the front row and led the field to the green.  Lear jumped out front to lead lap 1 but that did not last for long as Miller took the lead on lap 2.  Dave Cain quickly moved his machine into the second position after starting from the second row.  Brent Larson and Craig Thatcher followed Cain in third and fourth as Miller continued to cruise out front.  Larson then caught Cain and began to battle with him for second until a lap 9 caution flew.  Cain used the restart to his advantage as he got a great jump on Miller and they went side by side the next lap as Cain eventually took the lead.  Larson and Thatcher followed as they too were able to get by Miller, and did battle for the second position behind Cain.  Ron Schreiner was on the move behind the top four as he went from starting eleventh to the fifth position.  Thatcher was finally able to get by Larson for second as the white flag flew and quickly closed in on the rear bumper of Cain.  As they came out of turn 4, Thatcher gave Cain a great run but it wasn’t enough as Cain took the checkered flag ahead of Thatcher, Larson, Miller, and Schreiner.
