CLS Teams Gear Up For Next Weekend’s Masters Event
New Richmond, WI
June 10, 2006
Despite the threat of rain all afternoon, a great field of 123 DTRA machines
checked in to do battle at Cedar Lake and put on a show for the crowd who
braved the chance of rain to watch the races. But the rain held off and
allowed the program to run as scheduled. The track finally beginning to
take it’s midseason form allowing drivers to dial in their cars and as a
result turn some really quick laps. In the DTRA track point standings
the leaders were; Joel Cryderman in Super Late Models, Joey Jensen in
Modifieds, Larry Boumeester for Super Stocks, Keith Tourville in Streets, and
Greg Chesley in Midwest Mods. After the field flew through heat races,
we got another show from stunt devil Clay “The Wildman” Gallagher.
The Wildman added two more cars to last week’s total of three and made it a
five car ramp jump. As the audience held their breath, Clay smoothly
made the run and cleared all five parked cars before smashing down hard on the
nose of the vehicle. A great jump for the crowd and a promise to return
next weekend for the Masters to put on an even better show yet!
The first feature of the night, for a change, was the DTRA Sunoco Super Stocks
with Justin Pogones and Jeff Pellersells on the front row. Fourth place
starter Tim Borgeson dropped out with transmission trouble in the warm up
laps. The field took off to a quick start but soon was brought down
under caution for a Kevin Ayotte wreck in turn three. On the restart it
was fifth place started Greg Nippoldt charging past the leaders to take
control of the event. Behind Nippoldt it was Pogones, 11th place starter
Dan Gullixson, Larry Boumeester and Mike Weber all trading paint for
positions. Pogones soon found his way past Nippoldt and resumed command
of the race. As the laps wound on it was all Pogones out front but a
great battle for second ended in Gullixson beating out Nippoldt to the
line.
DTRA Amsoil Modifieds rolled out next with a stacked field behind the front
row of Dave Cain and Shaun Kelley. On the drop of the green it was all
Cain as he dug in low and drove out to a five car lead on Craig Thatcher and
the bright pink painted 2G machine of Ashley Anderson. On the restart it
was a replay of the initial green with Cain bolting out to a lead ahead of
Anderson and Thatcher who was engaged in a great three way battle for third
with Jason Miller. The three literally went three-wide several times
over two laps before Miller pulled away from both followed by Thatcher and
then Anderson. As Cain and the top four smoothly evaded lapped traffic
out front, it was Shaun Kelley and Ron Schreiner who showed up to battle for
fourth spot with Anderson over the last couple laps. At the checkers it
was Cain leading Miller, Thatcher, Anderson and Kelley in fifth.
DTRA Super late Models were next with Eric Breeschoten and Mike Bear out
front. Breeschoten found a bad head gasket on his machine before the
event and decided to start last, make one lap and pull off. That moved
Terry Casey out to the front row and ultimately be all he needed as he used
the front row spot to take off into the lead and a 10 car lead over Pat Doar
and company. The lead was short lived as a Jeff Patchen spin brought the
field under caution on lap seven. On the restart Casey slipped ever so
slightly and allowed Doar to pull past into the lead. Doar’s lead
lasted half a lap as Casey got back into the gas and drove past on the high
side to resume command. The field fell under the second caution of the
night for a Brandon Jensen spin in turn four. On the restart an
absolutely unbelievable battle formed at the front with Casey on the high
side, Joey Jensen on the low side and Pat Doar sandwiched in the middle for
the lead. A great battle but short lived as yet another caution flew for
a Tom Chrest spin. With the racetrack in near perfect shape, battles
were two and three wide all throughout the field. Up front it was still
Casey battling with Doar, Jensen and now Ashley Anderson for the lead.
On lap 23 Anderson moved past Jensen for third and pulled up on the rear
bumper of Doar for second. Doar meanwhile was setting up Casey for a
great pass coming out of turn two for the lead. Casey fought back and
the pair went side-by-side headlong into lapped traffic. Doar and Casey
were literally door-to-door at the white flag and stayed that way for the
entire last lap before Casey somehow edged out Doar to the stripe by half a
car length! Wow! An unbelievable racetrack provided the grounds
for a fantastic Late Model event.
DTRA Street Stocks has a tough act to follow next with Melvin Raska and Chris
Gullixson adorning the front row. Coming from the third spot it was
Shawn Kammerud bolting to the front right away followed by Raska and Keith
Tourville. It stayed that way until Jason Vandekamp and Tourville got
tangled on the backstretch sending Vandekamp gently into the concrete.
The caution was called on Tourville sending him to the back. On the
restart is was almost a replay of the Late Model feature with Ron Hanestad,
Vandekamp, and Kammerud going three-wide for the lead. The battle lasted
for several laps until a Brian Loss spin brought the field down under
caution. With two laps to go the battle for the lead was between
Hanestad on the low side and Vandekamp up top. Hanestad was just too
strong down low and beat Vandekamp to the line to claim the victory ahead of
Kammerud, Gullixson and Dave Lamont in fifth. Congrats to Hanestad and
his team on their first win in the DTRA.
DTRA Midwest Mods were the last event of the evening with point lead Greg
Chesley redrawing the pole and Justin Schill to his outside. After a
first lap caution the field retried the start with Chesley holding onto the
point with Schill in tow. Behind them it was Andy Jones and fast mover
Alan Bohlman coming up to fourth after starting ninth. At the halfway
mark it was still all Chesley until a caution slowed the field. Chesley
took off into the lead on the restart but was soon reeled in by Bohlman.
Bohlman make quick work of Chesley to take control of the race on lap
11. Chelsey lost the handle in turn four spinning the 97C machine not
long after and dropped back to mid-pack before regaining control. With
that Bohlman easily cruised off to the victory ahead of Schill, Jason Gross,
Clark Perry, and Andy Jones.
