Great Racing and High-Flying Highlight Kids Night at Cedar Lake

New Richmond, WI - June 3rd, 2006 - As the unofficial start to summer kicked off last weekend, summer felt officially underway this weekend as temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees Saturday afternoon.  With great weather traditionally comes great crowds, and that was the case Saturday night at CLS as a large crowd filed in for the first of three kids night at the racetrack.  Free admission, ice cream and toys for the kids were just the beginning of the fun this evening.  In addition to the great action on the racetrack, Stuntman Clay “The Wildman” Gallagher climbed into a truck and accelerated off a ramp to jump over three parked cars.  The crowd loved it as Clay landed on all four wheels despite not having a landing ramp to come down on.  Much to the crowds delight, “The Wildman” told the audience he would be coming back next week (June 10th) to do the jump again… this time over five cars!

The first feature to roll out onto the speedway was the DTRA Midwest Modifieds.   Lonnie Louschke and Bryan Siercks redrew the front row to lead us to the green.  Dan Wheeler was quick to jump into the lead from the second row with Louschke following him closely.  Alan Bohman kept a close eye on the leaders from the third spot until a lap 11 caution.  On the restart Bohman was able to get by Louschke for second, however they were not able to complete a lap after the pass and Louschke was able to return to second on the lap 13 restart.  With a green, white, checkered restart, Wheeler jumped out again to the lead with Louschke following closely.  Louschke mounted a challenge in turn two for the lead on the final lap, but Wheeler was just too strong and pulled away to take the checkers.

DTRA Sunoco Super Stocks were the next feature to wheel out of the pit area for their feature.  Justin Dodge and Tim Borgeson redrew the front row with the hard charging Larry Boumeester right behind in third.  Borgeson jumped out to a quick lead with Dodge and Boumeester in tow.  The first caution flew on lap two for a Mike Weber spin.  Action resumed with Borgeson soon feeling heat from Boumeester.  The pair went door-to-door for six or seven laps before Boumeester completed the low pass at the halfway mark on lap 10.  Behind them it was Jim Martinson and Dodge battling for the third spot with Chris Gorka holding down the fifth spot.   With Boumeester sailing off into the night it was Martinson and Borgeson left battling for the spoils.  After Martinson won that battle and securing the second spot it was Gorka who made a run at Borgeson for the final podium finish.  In the end it was Borgeson claiming third with Boumeester taking the victory ahead of Martinson.  Martinson was later disqualified for not scaling after the race.

DTRA Amsoil Modifieds were up next with Joey Jensen and Shaun Kelley up front to start.  Jensen took the low line around to stake claim to the lead with Jason Miller falling in behind.  A caution flew early for a spin down the backstretch.  On the restart Jensen held strong on the point with Miller chasing hard and Kelley trying hard to hold off Scott Splittstoesser and Dave Cain for third.  At the halfway mark it was still all Jensen up front and Miller in check, but the action was for third as Cain and Kelley were trading the position over a series of laps all the while slicing through lapped traffic.  On lap 16 it was Miller ducking under Jensen for the lead coming down the front stretch.  But back came Jensen on the backstretch with a great move coming out of turn two to retake the lead.  A caution flew with two laps to go as fifth place runner Dave Lear had a breakdown in turn three.  That set up a two lap dash for the cash with Jensen leading Miller and Kelley to the green.  It was Cain diving low and holding the bottom groove solid to secure the victory over Miller and Cain.

The big show, The DTRA Impact Printing Super Late models stormed onto the speedway next with Joel Cryderman and Joey Jensen handling the front row.  It was Cryderman who lead the first lap, but a short lived lead it was as Brent Larson absolutely stormed by on the bottom to take the lead.  To make matters more interesting, Pat Doar came from the fourth starting spot to battle with Larson and Cryderman for the lead.  The battle was halted with a Rick Egersdorf breakdown in turn two on lap six.  On the restart it was Larson putting a little distance between himself and the hungry pack of Doar, Cryderman and now red-hot Terry Casey in fourth.  As the field hit the midway point, it was still Larson but Doar had closed the gap to a car length and was beginning to look for an opening.  Behind Doar, Casey put a slide job on Cryderman to take third.  With the leaders now working lapped traffic, Doar and Casey were able to pull right up on Larson and battle for the lead.  At the two-to-go sticks it was still Larson but only by a car length over Doar and Casey.  Despite the constant pressure all race long, it was Brent Larson’s night as he held off the wily veterans to take the feature victory.  Congrats to Brent and his team!

The final event of the night was the DTRA Street stocks with Melvin Raska and Keith Tourville out front.  Tourville stuck to the high side and powered out front ahead of Jeff Heintz and Chris Gullixson.  Mark Froehlich and Mike Kalkbrenner were battling hard for the fourth spot when the caution flew for a breakdown.  Tourville held on the lead through several restarts but soon found himself in a three wide battle for the lead with three to go and Jason Vandekamp and Mark Froehlich took their shots at the leader.  On the last lap Vandekamp dove low in turn one and slide across the speedway and into Tourville bringing both machines into the turn two concrete bringing out the caution.  Tourville was given his sport back as the field faced a green-white-checkered dash.  Side by side Tourville and Froehlich went under the white flag and they stayed that way all the way to the checkers with Tourville edging out the victory.  A great conclusion to a great night of racing!
