Fast Track Leads To Great Memorial Weekend
New Richmond, WI - May 27th, 2006 - With some rather unusual nice weather for
a memorial weekend, many drivers and fans alike found their way to the Cedar
Lake Speedway for another great evening of racing. With 117 cars on
hand, and over 24 cars in the Midwest Mods, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late
Models, their was a full field of cars battling against each other. Many
drivers showed their American pride by flying flags from the rear of their
cars. Many great fans also were able to take time out of their long
weekends and come out to watch some of the great racing action and support
their favorite drivers. With the track as good as it has been all year,
the heat races were fast and set the stage for some extremely fast feature
races.
The first feature to roll out onto the legendary Cedar Lake Speedway was the
DTRA Street Stocks. Jason Vandekamp and Scott Splittstoesser led the
field to the green from the front row. Vandekamp took off into a lap 1
lead with Mark Froelich jumping from the fourth starting spot into
second. Froelich caught Vandekamp on lap 4 and they battled for the lead
until a lap 6 caution as Mark Larson hit the wall in turn 2. Vandekamp
and Froelich again took off from the field and continued to battle all the way
to the white flag as they took it side by side. Keith Tourville joined
the battle to make it a three-way battle for the lead. All three went
into turn 4 together and it was Froelich who gave way as he and Tourville made
contact and Froelich ended up sideways in turn 4. Vandekamp took the
checkered followed by Tourville, however Tourville was flagged for aggressive
driving and was dropped to the back and Froelich was ruled to finish second.
The DTRA Midwest Modifieds were next to roll on out onto the speedway, with
Justin Schill and Jason Gross leading from the front row. Gross was
quick at the cone and jumped out to a lap 1 lead over Jeff Marshall from the
fourth starting spot. Schill dropped from the pole spot to third, but
stayed right with the leaders to make it a three-way battle for the top
spot. A large pile up in between turns 3 and 4 caused a lap 9 caution,
and that was what Marshall needed as he was able to get by Gross on the
restart. Gross and Schill followed closely for a couple laps, but
Marshall was able to pull away to a five car length lead all the way to the
lap 15 checkered. Gross and Schill followed to finish second and third.
The DTRA Super Stocks rolled out from the pit area next with Charlie Weber and
Dan Carlson starting from the row number 1. A caution on the first lap
in turn 3 led us to a restart of the feature. Carlson enjoyed the second
start much more as he was able to use it as an advantage to jump out to a lead
on lap 1. Larry Boumeester followed all the way from the eight
starting spot into second with Mike Loomis following him into third and Tim
Borgeson was on the move from tenth to fourth. Boumeester slowing reeled
in Carlson and was able to get by him on lap 4 to take the lead. Another
caution in turns 3 and 4 brought out a the yellow on lap 6. After a long
cleanup from the yellow, the field was finally able to take the green and
Boumeester led Carlson, Loomis, Borgeson to the green. Boumeester jumped
right back to it into the top spot and was followed closely by Carlson.
Those two battled all the way to the checkered with Boumeester winning by a
car length over Carlson. Borgeson was eventually able to get by Loomis
for third.
The DTRA Modifieds headed out onto the speedway next with Eric Wendland and
Joey Jensen leading to the green flag. Jensen put his machine out front
from the start, with Scott Splittstoesser following closely. Jason
Miller moved up into third and was followed by Dave Cain who was on the move
from ninth to fourth. A lap 3 caution flew and bunched up the field, but
Jensen once again moved out to a lead. It didn’t take Cain long to
move into third over Miller and make it a battle for second, and on lap 10
Cain moved past Splittstoesser for second behind the fast Jensen. Jensen
continued to work the bottom. A slip by Cain in turn 2 dropped him to
fourth on lap 14 as Splittstoesser and Miller moved ahead. A fast moving
Craig Thatcher drove from twelfth to fifth to battle with Cain on lap
16. Jensen continued to be too strong and took a white flag finish as
there was a caution as he took the checkered. Splittstoesser followed in
second, Miller in third, and Cain and Thatcher rounded out the top five.
The final feature on the night featured the DTRA Late Models. Eric
Breeschoten and last weeks feature winner Terry Casey were on the front row of
this fast field as they took the green. Breeschoten dropped to the
bottom as soon as the green flag flew and was able to jump out to a slight
lead over Casey who was riding the cushion. Brent Larson followed
from the second row and moved into third. The front three stayed
that way until lap 7 when Casey was able to get by Breeschoten for the
lead. Larson followed soon after and moved into second. Joey
Jensen stayed hot after jumping right from his modified to his late model and
moved from the eight starting spot into fourth. He then had a problem on
lap 14, and Ron Schreiner was able to get by him for the fourth spot and Rick
Egersdorf moved into fifth from the eight starting spot. Casey was able
to pull out a large lead over Larson, however a lap 18 caution bunched up the
field. The caution proved to be no help to Larson and the rest of the
field as Casey continued his dominance and jumped out to a large lead.
Schreiner was able to get side by side with Breeschoten for third on lap 25
and they battle side by side for the final 5 laps for the position with
Breeschoten winning the battle and finishing third. Casey was once again
just much too strong for the rest of the field and led all the way to take the
checkered by over a strait-away. Larson followed and finished second .
