School Bus Races Highlight Action At Cedar Lake

New Richmond, WI - May 20, 2006 - You’re usually safe to assume that the sight of a school bus causes most kids to frown and maybe even run the other way.  But that’s certainly not the case this past Saturday night as Cedar Lake held its second annual School Bus Showdown along with four regular classes or racing.  Osceola, New Richmond, St. Croix Central, and Baldwin/Woodville High Schools each entered a bus into competition and brought a large number of students to cheer on their respective school’s bus driven by their favorite teacher.  DTRA Super Late Models, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, and Midwest Mods combined for 87 cars to complete the program.

DTRA Street Stocks were the first feature of the evening after the first round of the School Bus Derby.  Brian Loss and Mark Froehlich redrew front row starting positions and lead the field to the green.  Keith Tourville started in the fifth spot and wasted no time moving the 111 machine to the front.  After passing Froehlich for the lead early on, Tourville put it on cruise control and walked away with the feature victory.  Jason Vandekamp and Chris Gullikson tried to run down Tourville but to no avail as Tourville was the class of the field on this night.

DTRA Midwest Mods were the next feature on tap with Greg Chelsey and Dave Lear brining the field to the green.  Lear looked strong from the green as head held off the charge from Chelsey and company early on.  A lap five caution brought the field to a halt with Lear leading Chelsey and Brandon Lampert.  On the restart Lear again held strong despite charges again from Chelsey and Shawn Phillips.  Just as Lear thought he was on his way to the checkers, the dreaded yellow flew on the last lap and forced the field into a green-white-checkered restart.  On the restart Lear stayed in the middle with Chelsey diving low and getting a run on the leader down the backstretch.  The pair went side by side for the white lap until Lear edged ahead by the nose of the racecar to take the checkers literally by three feet in front of Chelsey.  A great finish to an action packed race; congrats to both Lear and Chelsey on terrific runs.

DTRA Super Stocks were the third feature of the evening with Dan Carlson and Justin Pogones out front.  Heading into the first turn Larry Boumeister got crossed up and that started a multi-car wreck that brought the field under caution.  On the second try the field got through turns one and two before Ryan Wiome spun in turn three bring out the caution.  On the third try, Kevin Ayotte lost the handle in turn three on the first lap bringing out yet another caution.  A successful fourth try led to Carlson holding onto the lead on the inside but a high flying Matt Sinna rim riding around the cushion.  A few more cautions into the event, the field was closing in on the time limit when Sinna blew past Carlson for the lead on lap six.  With Carlson digging hard to regain the lead he lost the grip and spun the 24 machine coming out of turn two.  Sinna took control of the event and didn’t have much trouble holding on to lead as he absolutely powered around the high side of the racetrack.  After a total of eight cautions the race was shortened due to the time limit being reached.  Sinna walked to the victory with Mike Loomis and Pogones coming home second and third respectively.

Super Late Models were up next with Brent Laursen and Trent Follmer showing the way.  Follmer used the high side to take an early lead with Laursen and Brent Larson chasing closely behind.  Brent Larson soon got around the other Brent Laursen and began closing the gap between him and Follmer out front.  Soon Pat Doar found his way first into fourth then by Laursen for third and began his march to catch the leaders.  Next it was Joey Jensen getting past the pack and charging toward now Doar, Larson and leader Follmer.  Before long Follmer began encountering lapped traffic on the dry, slick, smooth racing surface.  At the halfway mark Follmer was still trying to outrun the hungry pack of Larson, Doar, Jensen, and now Joel Cryderman.  As Follmer held steadfast out front, the race for second was the focus of the grandstands.  Doar, Larson and Jensen all traded the position several times each over several laps.  This remained the best race on the track until the rocket ship painted like Terry Casey’s machine blew past all three and into the second position.  With Follmer taking the two-to-go sticks, Casey used the cushion and that ultra-fast top groove to blow past Follmer on the last lap and take the checkers in an absolutely unbelievable race!  Congratulations to Terry Casey and team on their first ever feature win at Cedar Lake.  An awesome race to say the least!

School buses took to the track to conclude the evening with the second part of their School Bus Showdown.  The field was inverted for this second race which meant heat one winner and defending race champ, Brian Meyer from Osceola High School forced to start at the rear of the field.   With bus parts scattered all over the race track, the six buses put on a fantastic show as they bumped and banged for ten laps around the high banked oval.  The action was so rough it ended in St. Croix Central’s Bill Emery getting flipped over on the back straightaway.  Bill was OK to the delight of the crowd.  In the end it was the fan favorite of Brian Meyer and team Osceola coming home with the checkers to make him a perfect two-for-two in the School Bus Showdowns here at Cedar Lake Speedway.  Congratulations to all of school bus participants and all those who helped prepare the buses.  We hope to see all you fans back at next year’s third annual School Bus Showdown or hopefully sooner.
