Follmer, Splittstoesser, Carlson, Chesley, And Vandekamp Pick Up Feature Wins At CLS

New Richmond, WI - May 6, 2006 - As summer fast approaches and these race teams get more races under their belt and laps on their machines, it means one thing, the teams are getting their cars dialed into midseason form which translates to intense side-by-side racing on the race track.  Many teams come equipped with new cars, motors, setups, and especially tires as four of the five classes moved up to Goodyear Racing Eagles tires this season.   It often takes a few races to get the bugs worked out and drivers comfortable in their equipment and with the racetrack.  Once that happens it makes for some great action, especially at fast, high-baked tracks like Cedar Lake.  Mother Nature unfortunately didn’t cooperate last weekend as we endured nearly four straight days of rain.  But with the sun out and a chilly spring breeze blowing, the night was heated up with 131 cars signing into the pit gate ready to do battle.

After some just excellent heat races, the fields were set for feature action with the DTRA Street Stocks as usual leading the way.  Jason Vandekamp and Scott Splittstoesser redrew the front row in what looked like would be a caution filled race as the field fell under two cautions in the first three laps.  Vandekamp maintained the early lead followed by Keith Tourville and Splittstoesser in third.  The battle was up front all race long as Tourville and Vandekamp traded the lead multiple times throughout the entire race.  Tourville had the lead as the pair took the two-to-go sticks; Vandekamp had it at the white flag, and the pair got tangled heading down the backstretch on the final lap.  Tourville tasted a little concrete after contact with Vandekamp and that allowed Vandekamp to beat Tourville back to the line to claim the victory.  Exciting race as the pair definitely put on a great show.

DTRA Midwest Mods marched onto the racing surface next with Greg Chesley and Shawn Phillips showing the way to the green.  Chesley used the bottom to hold off the herd of challengers behind him led by Dan Wheeler.  As Wheeler closed in on Chesley, the field went down under green for a multi-car spin in turn three.  After a series of restarts due to multiple incidents over the next few laps, Chesley persistently held off the charges from Wheeler in second and Phillips in third.  The time limit rule was rapidly approaching due to a four car pileup on the backstretch on lap six.  Chesley maintained the lead at the two-to-go sticks and was able to hold off a last lap charge from Wheeler to take the checkers.  Chesley off to a fast start in 2006 after picking up his second feature win of the season.

DTRA Modifieds were the next crew up with Troy Girolamo and Scott Splittstoesser sharing the front row.  Splittstoesser powered past Girolamo for the lead and the field bunched up behind.  With Splittstoesser setting sail up front, the field literally went two and three wide the entire way through the field.  After a few laps Craig Thatcher and Dave Lear emerged from the field in second and third respectively and set their sights on Splittstoesser up front.  Splittstoesser saw his lead instantaneously erased with a caution flag on lap seven as Clint Larson lost the wheel in turn two the grew a pair of eyes and much to the crowd delight rolled itself directly into the pond at the center of the speedway.  With the dreaded black 91 of Thatcher on him bumper, Splittstoesser took off into the lead on the restart.  Dave Cain running in the fourth sport had a breakdown on the backstretch and was not able to make it to the pits, bringing out the caution on lap eight.  Thatcher tried the low side this time on Splittstoesser heading into turn one and made it work as he pulled even, but Splittstoesser had to much momentum as he powered by heading into turn three.  A few laps later Ron Schreiner and Jason Miller got tangled heading down the front stretch sending Schreiner headlong into the turn one wall ending his event.  Soon Splittstoesser had a new challenger in Joey Jensen as he found his way past Thatcher and soon was putting pressure on the leader.  Jensen tried high and low to get around the leader over multiple laps until the caution flew yet again for Owen Grube eating a little concrete over in turn two.  After yet another restart, Splittstoesser held on claim the victory over hard charging Jensen and Thatcher.  Congratulations to Scott and his team on what we believe to be their first feature victory!

DTRA Super Late models thundered onto the speedway next with hot-shoes Trent Follmer and Caley Emerson on the front row.  Follmer burst out into the lead with Joel Cryderman giving all Emerson he could handle on the low side of the track.  Behind them it was Ashley Anderson and Mike Nutzmann battling for the fourth spot.  Meanwhile up front Follmer put the 31T machine into overdrive and walked way from the field like they were standing still.  But the big lead was erased with a Tom Nesbitt breakdown in turn four on lap five.  On the restart it was all Follmer again but now the battle was for second with Cryderman, Steve Laursen and Emerson all vying for the spot.  Cryderman emerged with the spot after a few laps and set his sights on Follmer for the lead.  As the laps fly by it was still all Follmer up front as Cryderman didn’t have the muscle to mount any kind of challenge.  Behind them it was Laursen, Anderson and now Terry Casey battling for top five spots.  A 20 lap stretch of green flag racing spread the field out and created a pile of lapped traffic for the leaders to elude.  A great battle shaped up between Laursen and Cryderman for the second spot with six laps to go.  Cryderman won the battle but that allowed Anderson to sneak by Laursen for the third spot.  In the end it was all Trent Follmer tonight as had was the class of the event and walked home to the checkers ahead of Cryderman, Anderson, Laursen, and Casey for the first ever DTRA Super Late model victory.

DTRA Super Stocks were the finale of the evening with Tim Borgeson and Dan Carlson handling the front row.  Borgeson handled the challenge for the first lap but lost the battle on the second as Carlson used the top side to drive past for the lead.  Carlson used the clean air and drove away from the field as Borgeson and now Dale Gangl battled hard for the second spot.  Behind those two it was Chuckie DeSmith and Rich Bishop trading punches for the fourth spot until DeSmith broke in turn four brining out the caution on lap 12.  On the restart DeSmith made a great move and was able to put pressure on the leader Carlson.  Kelly Anderson found himself solidly in the third spot as the field took the two laps to go sticks.  Up front Carlson had a side-by-side battle with Gangl cooking as the pair took the white flag.  Over the final circuit Carlson had just too much for Gangl and motored home to pick up the checkers to round out the night of racing.
