DTRA Hits On All Cylinders At Cedar Lake In First Official Weekend
New Richmond, WI, 4/22/06. With opening weekend and all the anticipation
that goes along with it, the official DTRA season got under way with 130
machines battling it out for both cash and those valuable DTRA championship
points. Many teams still trying to work the kinks out of either new
machines, new engines, or both. After 15 lightning fast heat races or
Super Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, and Street Stocks,
the fields were set for the five money races.
DTRA Street Stocks set the table for the features with Jason Vandekamp and
Delmar Clapp redrawing the front row. Vandekamp quickly assumed the lead
but Keith Tourville stayed glued to his rear bumper after starting in the
third spot. Tourville followed in Vandekamp’s tracks for a few laps
until he found a quick line and drove past him to take over the top
spot. With Tourville leading the field, Mark Froelich and Shawn Kammerud
waged an absolute war for the third spot. As the checked fell on the
field it was Keith Tourville picking up his first win of 2006 with a half a
car length victory over Vandekamp, Kammerud, Froelich and Jeff Heintz.
DTRA Midwest Mods took to the track next with Shawn Phillips and Jim
Schweitzer adorning the front row. Schweitzer powered around the outside
of turns one and two to take command of the race. Phillips and Jason
Gross stayed within striking distance of Schweitzer. Behind the top
three the next 12 to 15 cars were running side-by-side and top-to-bottom on
the freshly graded racing surface. Schweitzer remindful front as the
field began eluding lapped traffic on lap nine. A caution on lap 11
brought out the caution for a Cory Wilson breakdown. On the restart
Schweitzer led the hungry pack by less than a car length through the next two
laps. Greg Chelsey was the next guy on Schweitzer’s tail followed by
Phillips and Dan Wheeler coming all the way from the 11th starting spot.
But despite the pursuit, Schweitzer was clearly the class of this field this
particular night as he beat Chelsey and Phillips to the line by a couple car
lengths. Congrats to Jim Schweitzer and his team on what we believe to
be his first ever feature win.!
DTRA Modifieds took to center stage next with Craig Thatcher and Clint Larson
leading the way to the green. Thatcher took off like a rocket ship
heading to the moon the way headed into the first turn. Darrell Nelson
used the same route and tucked in behind Thatcher followed by Joey
Jensen. The field was quickly halted to for a breakdown only one
lap in. On the restart Thatcher again held his ground with Jensen in
second as second place runner Nelson lost an air filter and was forced to pull
off. The party for two at the front was quickly made into a party for
three s Dave Cain literally blew the doors off first Jensen for second then
Thatcher for first. Thatcher quickly fought back and used the inside
groove to keep Cain only a car length out while Jensen remained a close
third. A third caution flew to slow the field briefly. Cain used
the restart to only put more distance between himself and the dreaded black 91
machine of Thatcher. The real action was back in the pack as battles two
and three wide were shaping up all over the racetrack. Yet another
yellow waived for a Shawn Kreyer and Ryan Olson tangle in turn three.
Under the yellow, your leader, Dave Cain, developed terminal problems under
the hood and had to be pushed off the speedway.
Thatcher reassumed the lead with Jensen again in hot pursuit. The pair
went side-by-side for two laps until yet another yellow flew for contact made
between Jason Miller and Brent Larson battling for fourth. Thatcher
maintain control of the race for, oh, about a quarter lap until Jensen again
pulled even and eventually past Thatcher for the lead. Thatcher again
fought back and the pair traded paint for another two laps until yet another
yellow flew for Shaun Kelly’s driveshaft lying in turn one. That set
up a three lap dash to the cash with Jensen leading Thatcher and Jason Miller
to the green. Jensen went high and Thatcher dove low heading into turn
one. They then went side-by-side for a lap until the group entered turn
three, three wide, which resulted in Thatcher spinning sideway and drawing the
8th caution of the race. Thatcher was tagged with the caution and that
set up a green/white/checkered finish with Jensen leading Miller and Al
Uotinen. Jason Miller dove in low past Jensen and came away with the
lead, but the lead was short lived as Jensen powered back around in turns
three and four coming to the white flag. It remained that way for the
final lap as Jensen beat Miller to the line by half a car length to pick up
the hard earned feature victory.
DTRA Super Late models were up next as Billy Byholm and Joel Cryderman held
down the front row. Byholm used the bottom to hold off the rim riding
Cryderman for the first few laps as the field began to settle in place.
Ron Schreiner was running third and Rick Egersdorf a solid fourth until
Egersdorf spun in turn two about the same time Cryderman found his way around
Byholm for the lead. Egersdorf headed pit side to fix a flat tire.
Cryderman lead the field to the green as hard charging Pat Doar found his
typical high line riding the groove the speedway and began his charge from
eighth to third until the second caution of the race flew for Kerry Hanson and
Jeff Provinzino getting together in turn three. Cryderman held tight on
the restart but quickly had company from the double-one express of Pat Doar.
Doar found the high side to power past Cryderman into the lead until Ron
Schreiner and Trent Follmer got together in turn one and the contact sent
Follmer into the concrete. Doar paced the field on the restart with
Cryderman and now a hard charging Terry Casey joining the battle for the
lead. The three stayed that way for the next handful of laps until a
small pileup in turn three brought the field under caution yet again.
Doar resumed control of the event on the restart with Cryderman and Casey
hanging within striking distance. But that distance was just too much to
over come this night as Doar evaded the pair to walk away with the
victory. Casey and Cryderman went wheel-to-wheel for the last three laps
until Cryderman edged out the second place victory. Congrats to Pat Doar
and his team on the victory.
DTRA Street Stocks concluded the evening with Chad Halstrom and Tim Borgeson
out front. Jim Gullikson absolutely motored to the front around the lead
pair on the first lap and took off into the night. Gullikson quickly had
a ten car length lead over Borgeson, Dale Gangl, Mike Weber, and Larry
Boumeister. That lead was erased as quickly as it was built with a
yellow flying over the field for a Chuckie DeSmith breakdown on lap six.
On the restart Gullikson had no problems pulling out to a lead over Gangl in
second and now Charlie Weber in third. Weber kept a steady supply of
bumper on DeSmith as the pair battled hard for that second spot. Larry
Boumeister soon broke up the battle for second as he got by Weber and quickly
applied pressure to Gangl. With all the action in the rear view,
Gullikson easily cruised off the victory in front of Boumeister who overcame
Gangl for second, Gangl in third, Weber in fourth, and Mike Weber rounding out
the top five. An impressive run for the rookie Super Stock driver to cap
off an exciting night of racing.
