Sprint Cars Invade Cedar Lake To Conclude Opening Weekend
New Richmond, WI, 4/15/05. Opening weekend came to a conclusion at Cedar Lake
Speedway Saturday night with the DTRA making it’s inaugural weekend
complete. 360 Sprint car accompanied Super Stocks, Midwest Mods,
Modifieds, and Super Late Models combined for 144 total cars completing on
Saturday night. A great crowd turned out to watch the completion of the
much anticipated DTRA opening weekend. Many of the teams were debuting
new cars or new teams all together. The great field of cars flew threw
heat races and B-features before all five classes marched out for their
A-Mains to complete the action-packed weekend.
Midwest Mods were the first feature of the evening with the 66 of Lonnie
Louschke and the 11S Justin Schill leading the field to the green from the
front row. Louschke jumped out to a quick and large lead over Dane
Durban who quickly moved from fourth to second. A caution on lap seven
brought the field back together and that was what Durbin needed as he was able
to get by Louschke a lap later. Schill followed Durbin’s lead as he
too was able to get by Louschke a couple laps later as Louschke lost control
and spun in turn 1. With a lap 13 caution, things got interesting up
front as Durbin led Schill and Greg Chelsey in the 97C to the green.
Durbin was able to hold both of them off until turn 3 of the final lap when
Chelsey finished off his impressive run and was able to get by both Durbin and
Schill to take the checkered.
Next up to hit the track was the Billy Anderson Memorial Sprint Car
feature. Jake Peters in the 57X and Chuck Swenson in the X Car led the
field to the start-finish line. It did not take long for Peters to jump
out to a good size lead over Swenson, as they both took off like
rockets. The second row of Scott Winters in the R19 as well as Curt Lund
in the 87 followed Swenson closely as the top 4 hit lapped traffic early on
lap 4. Peters continued to lead the top four as they worked through the
lapped traffic until a lap 14 caution came out as Eric Lutz spun in turn
2. Less than a lap after the restart, the 14 of John Nelson took a wild
ride into turn 3 as he flipped onto his wing bringing out the red flag.
Nelson was able to walk away safely from the crash. Once underway
again, Peters stayed on the rail that he had been running as he once again
jumped out to a quick lead in front of the same top 4. After battling
for much of the race, Winters was finally able to get by Swenson for
second. A lap 17 caution did not change anything as Peters led from wire
to wire as he took the green, white, checked finish for the feature win.
Swenson had problems as he took the white flag and dropped from third to
finish eleventh.
The Modifieds were next to roll out on the speedway with the ZOOM car of Owen
Grube on the pole and the 44 of Darrell Nelson to his side. Nelson
jumped out to a lap 1 lead with Tyler Keyser in the 7K and Joey Jenson in the
V2 following. After a turn 4 pile-up brought a caution on lap 1, Nelson
was able to pull back out into the lead over Keyser and Jensen as Craig
Thatcher moved into the fourth position. Jenson caught Keyser on lap 8
and they made contact down the backstretch which ended up with Keyser hitting
the outside wall hard bringing out a caution. Nelson once again led the
field to the green but Jensen did not let him get away as they battled side by
side for the lead. Dave Cain in the 2C continued his march to the front
as he was able to get by Thatcher for third and proceeded to catch Nelson and
Jenson to make a 3-way battle for the lead. Nelson, Jensen, and Cain
battled on the final lap and came out of turn 4 three wide with Jensen making
a great move to take the checkered and Cain coming up a half-car length short
to finish second.
Following the great Modified feature was the DTRA Late Models on the
track. The 97 of Ron Schreiner and 7C of Jim Carlson led the field to
the green. Schreiner took a lap one lead followed by Terry Casey in the
42 in second and Carlson in third. A lap one caution bunched up the
field but once again Schreiner took his 97 machine out front. A problem
on Casey’s 42 forced him to drop out of the race right after the caution,
moving Carlson to second and the 31T of Trent Follmer into third.
Schreiner continued to pull away from the rest of the field as he worked his
way through lapped traffic to a full straight-away lead over Carlson by lap
13. Follmer was eventually able to get by Carlson for second on lap 17
just before a lap 18 caution. After the first restart failed, Schreiner
led the field to a green white checkered restart. Follmer gave Schreiner
all he had but came up a little short as Schreiner led from green to checkered
the whole way in an impressive run to win his first feature of the year and
first DTRA feature win at Cedar Lake Speedway.
The final Feature of the evening to take the track was the Super Stocks.
Tim Borgeson in the B37 and the 26W of Charlie Weber led the field to the
green flag. Borgeson took the lead from the start as the 77 of Scott
Lorens followed him from row 2 and Larry Boumeister made a quick move from row
4 into third. Lorens led the field to the green after a lap 3 caution
and they were mixing it up behind him as Borgeson had some contact and dropped
one spot to third as Boumeister moved into second. Lorens continued to
lead after a third caution flew as Boumeister followed and Charlie Weber moved
into third. Weber and Boumeister did battle for second on the final laps
which allowed Borgeson to join them to make it a three-way battle for second
as the white flag came out. Lorens pulled away even further and went on
to take the checkered by a straight away as he was followed by Boumeister,
Weber and Borgeson as they battled for the second position.
