DTRA’s First Event With Cedar Lake Speedway Opener
New Richmond, WI, 4/14/06. With all the off-season developments
finally in the past, it was time to go racing again. Cedar Lake Speedway
opened its 2006 racing campaign with the traditional twin Friday &
Saturday shows. On Friday night, the first night of DTRA competition,
133 DTRA racing machines consisting of Street Stocks, Midwest Mods, Super
Stocks, Modifieds, and Super Late Models entered the pits. The weather
couldn’t have been any better with sunny skies and nearly 80 degree temps
greeting race fans. With a whole load of new and re-lettered race
machines in the pits, action got under way with a great group of heat races
and B-features.
Street stocks were the first main event of the evening with Mark Froelich and
Jeff Nelson starting on the front row for the first feature of the 2006
season. Froelich took off into the lead with Jason Vandekamp ducking in
right behind after starting third. Vandekamp soon had enough of
Froelich’s rear bumper and drove past into the lead a few laps in.
Newcomer Shane Kisling started in the seventh spot but soon found himself
running second behind leader Vandekamp. The good run for Kisling came to
a premature halt after the 6 machine lost fire heading into turn two on lap 11
bringing out the caution. Vandekamp again motored out front of second
place runner Mike Kalkbrenner on the restart but soon found himself in a
battle with the hard charger over the last couple laps. That battle came
down to the wire as Kalkbrenner dove to the bottom of turn four and beat
Vandekamp to the line by no more than three feet! And a bonus to boot
with Kalkbrenner picking up double earnings courtesy of Arnie Ranta
Motorsports for winning on Goodyear Eagles. A great start to the 2006
racing season!
Midwest Mods were up next with Lonnie Louschke and Carth Mitchell leading the
field to the green. Louschke held the lead over Mitchell for the first
few laps until young driver Jesse Ogston lost a motor and came to a halt in
turn two bringing out the caution. Louschke again fended off the charge
from Greg Chelsey and Justin Schill. Chelsey soon fell back a bit but
Schill came even harder and pressured the leader at all four corners of the
racetrack. Tim Siercks was watching the action from the third spot with
Jeff Marshall and Dan Wheel rounding out the top five. In the end,
Louschke was just too strong this opening night and drove off to the victory
and the double payday courtesy of Arnie Ranta motorsports for winning on
Goodyear Eagles.
Modifieds were the next feature on tap with Larry Zeller and Jeremy Kerzman
showing the field to green. Zeller blasted out front with Kerzman and
Jason Miller smelling blood in the water. With the racers slicing and
dicing for position all throughout the field, the caution slowed the group for
a drive shaft sitting in turn two off Rick Friendt’s machine. On the
restart, Zeller held on but the field was again slowed due to Kevin Sexton
flipping his machine several times heading into turn one. On the
restart, Darrell Nelson just powered by both Zeller and Miller to take command
of the race. Only two laps later the caution again flew for a Shawn
Kreyer breakdown. Nelson led the charge back to the green with Miller
and now Dave Lear trying to real him in. Nelson held control until the
yellow flew for a turn three tangle between Kevin Yeager and Riley
Matthews. The restart saw Miller pull even with Nelson and battle side
by side for the last two laps. Nelson pulled ahead motoring down the
backstretch on the last lap and went on to win with Miller, Lear, Dave Cain,
and Brent Larson rounding out the top five. Darrel Nelson makes it three
for three on the double pay for winning on Good Year Eagles courtesy of Arnie
Ranta Motorsports. Third place finisher Dave Lear was disqualified at
the scale for being light.
DTRA Super Late models took to the track next with Mike Hesselink and Joey
Jensen redrawing the front row. Hesselink held strong on the bottom side
to maintain the lead until a lap three caution slowed the field for a Jim
Carlson spin in turn three. Hesselink remained out front for one lap
until defending track champion Pat Doar found the high groove and motored by
for the lead. Doar soon found himself with company from the 51 machine
of Joel Cryderman. Cryderman and Doar literally traded the lead three
times over three laps until Doar settled in out front. Hesselink had his
hands full with fourth place runner Joey Jensen as those two got acquainted
with each other over the course of a couple laps. Meanwhile, out front
Doar began eluding lapped traffic as he tried to remain out of the reach of
hard charging Cryderman. As laps wound down Cryderman did catch Doar and
with a wild backstretch pass took command of the event. Doar got close
over the final three laps but didn’t have a good enough run to catch
Cryderman. Congratulations to Joel Cryderman and his team for an
impressive opening day victory and the first winning tally for the DTRA.
The final event of the night was the Super Stock feature with Larry Boumeister
and Brent Mueller out front. Boumeister used the bottom to power out
front with Mueller, newcomer Chad Horst and Jim Gullikson all in hot
pursuit. Horst got by Mueller on lap five and pulled even with
Boumeister by lap seven. As the pair went side-by-side for the lead, the
caution flew for a tangle in turn four. Horst was credited with the lead
on the restart but Boumeister powered back around on the first lap.
Gullikson, in his first night in a Super Stock, found the top side and also
went by Horst for second. Horst quickly powered back around and an
ensuing battle developed until a multi car spin in turn one brought the field
down under caution. When the racing resumed, so did the ferocious battle
up front between Boumeister, Kelly Anderson, Gullikson, and Horst. The
four battled all the way until the checkered with Boumeister taking the
checkers in front of Anderson, Horst, Gullikson and Charlie Weber. With
the win Boumeister picks up the double payday as he makes it a sweep on the
Good Year Racing Eagle tires. Congratulations to all the teams as we
look forward to an exciting 2006 racing season.
