Doar And Cain Claim Season Championships At Cedar Lake Speedway
New Richmond, WI; August 20, 2005. Season Championship Night #1 crowned
this year’s Super Late Model and Modified Season Champions, Pat Doar and
Dave Cain respectively. Cain had the modified championship wrapped up
before even pulling in the gate as he enjoyed an absolutely dominating year
both here at Cedar Lake and just about wherever else he raced. In the
Super Late Model class, Doar had enough of a lead heading into the night that
as long as he advanced to the A feature, he had the title in the bag no matter
how he finished the feature. Congratulations to both Pat and Dave, their
race teams and sponsors on outstanding seasons. Meanwhile, the Supers,
Streets, and Midwest Mods were still fully engaged in point battles as their
season championships are next Saturday night.
Midwest Modifieds were the first feature of the evening with Carth Mitchell
and Lonnie Louschke redrawing front row starting positions. Louschke
used the high side to jump out front on the first lap with Barrett Anders and
Matt Weisman following in line. That didn’t last long as Anders made
quick work of Louschke on his way to the point. A yellow flew for a
multi-car tangle coming down the front stretch on lap six with Anders,
Louschke, Weisman, Dane Durbin, and Dan Wheeler running in the top five.
Anders held the lead and began stretching it out over Louschke and company as
the laps began to count down. Durbin made a move up into third, but that
was the all the movement in the top five as Anders looked smooth on his way to
his first feature win at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Congratulations to
Barrett as we hope to see more of him next season.
Street Stocks were the next feature up with Jeff Nelson and Keith Tourville
finding themselves on the front row. Tourville took off on the field and
tried to hide in the first five laps, but Jim Gullikson ran him down on lap 10
as the leaders began encountering lapped traffic. A lap 11 pass put
Gullikson out front and gave Tourville the chance to try and run him back
down. As the leaders came down the front stretch, lapped traffic got
tangled with the lead pack causing a mêlée that ended with fourth place
runner Mark Froelich getting up-side-down in the 44 machine. Froelich
was OK after the wreck but the race car was anything but OK as the new machine
appeared to be destroyed. On the ensuing restart, Gullikson had no
trouble walking away from the field as he cruised to his 28th feature win of
the season.
Modifieds took to the speedway next with Ryan Olson and Brandon Jensen showing
the field to the green. Dave Cain lined up 11th on the grid, but it did
not matter as he already had the championship locked up. Although Cain
still wanted to get to the front to maintain his National point standings
lead. Maybe a little over-anxious or possibly just a racing incident,
either way Dave Cain was charged with a caution as he got tangled with Jason
Miller entering turn one on the first lap. Miller was not able to
continue and Cain was put to the rear of the field for the full restart.
On the ensuing restart, chaos occurred again, this time on the backstretch as
a nine car crash followed a Scott Splittstoesser breakdown. Daryl
Holzmer got the worse of it as he ramped off another car and ended up doing
four or five barrel rolls in mid air before crashing back down and destroying
the race car. Holzmer was shaken but alright following the wreck.
A single file restart was the result of the incidents. Olson was able to
gain a quick advantage but it didn’t stay that way for long as the
three-time and defending national champion Craig Thatcher powered right around
the leaders after coming from the fifth starting spot. The Jensen
brothers, Brandon and Joey, were behind Thatcher in second and third with
guess who, Dave Cain running fourth after coming all the way from dead last on
the field. As the laps wound down Cain tried hard to make a run at the
leaders but Thatcher and the Jensen brothers just had too much of a head
start. Thatcher cruised off to pick up his 18th feature win of the year
followed by Brandon and Joey Jensen. Congratulations again to Dave Cain
on just a spectacular year; it was truly fun to watch.
Super Late Models marched onto the speedway next with the top two finishers in
the season championship race, Pat Doar and Joel Cryderman starting
wheel-to-wheel on the front row. The drag race into turn one between
Doar and Cryderman was won by Joel as he snookered Pat at the cone.
Cryderman took off into the lead followed by Doar, Joey Jensen, Brent Larson,
and Ashley Anderson in fifth. Jensen drove inside of Doar on lap five to
take over the second position and began tracking down Cryderman.
Meanwhile Anderson drove to the outside of Larson to take over the fourth
spot. Cryderman began encountering lapped traffic by lap 10 and heavy
lapped traffic it was. Cryderman got hung up behind a group of cars
which allowed Jensen, Doar, and Anderson to all reel him in and pull within a
couple car lengths until a caution flew for Steve Hucovski’s spin.
Cryderman bolted on the ensuing restart but was quickly caught by
Jensen. That challenge didn’t last very long as Cryderman showed just
how strong the 51 machine is and drove off to a 10 car length led over Jensen,
Doar, and Anderson. As the laps wound down the second place battle
heated up with the three machines all trying different lines around the
speedway looking for the quickest line. Up front though it was all
Cryderman as he drove off to a 5-car length win over Jensen, picking up his
14th feature of the season. Pat Doar also pulled into victory lane to
celebrate the season championship and the $5,000 Champions check.
Congratulations to Pat, his team and sponsors on yet another championship
season in 2005!
The final event of the night was the Super Stock feature with Mike Hesselink
and Dan Carlson redrawing the front row. Carlson took the early lead
followed by Ashley Anderson, Cory Davis, Mike Loomis, and Greg Nippoldt.
Anderson pulled even with Carlson on lap 5 and the pair subsequently went
wheel-to-wheel for the next two laps until Anderson won the battle and assumed
command of the lead. Carlson gave pursuit but once out front Anderson
lit the afterburners and checked out on the field. Davis was running a
strong third with Loomis and Nippoldt battling for fourth in his rear-view
mirror. Behind them the field was literally going thee and four wide in
battles for top 10 spots. Every spot means more points and a better
standing heading into next Saturday’s season championship. Meanwhile
up front it was all Anderson as he cruised to yet another win in the Super
Stock division in 2005.
