Points Battles Intensify At Cedar Lake Heading Into Season Championships
New Richmond, WI; August 13, 2005. Following last weekends USA
Nationals, 133 CLS weekly race teams went right back at it to battle for
valuable Wissota and track season points. Several very tight point
battles have formed over the past few weeks in numerous divisions. With
only a couple weeks of racing left, those point battles could easily change in
one night of racing with a little good or bad fortune one way or another for
either competitor.
It was also Vintage Stock Car night at the Speedway on Saturday night;
showcasing racing machines from past decades and celebrating the Elmer Cook
Memorial. 21 Vintage machines checked in to both race and showcase these
beautiful machines. After the heat races were in the books and the
Vintage machines put on their show, Wissota Midwest Mods were the first
feature up with Dane Durbin and Vince Corbin redrawing the front row.
Corbin battled Durbin for a few laps before settling into the lead as Shane
Sabraski used the same line to slide into second spot after starting eighth on
the grid. The first yellow flew on lap six as several cars got tangled
in turn four. The field restarted in this order; Corbin, Sabraski, Dan
Wheeler, Dustin Smith, and Mark Thomas in fifth. Corbin fought out a
hard challenge from Sabraski on the restart but soon found more competition in
the form of Wheeler and Thomas coming hard from the low groove. Just as
the action was heating up, the yellow flew to cool the field as a three-car
fiasco erupted in turn three. That created a two lap dash to the cash
with Corbin trying to hold off Sabraski and company. On the restart,
Corbin had to hold off not only Sabraski, but also Wheeler as the R1 machine
pulled even with the two at the white flag. But on the final lap
Corbin was able to beat Sabraski to the stripe by no more than two feet.
Congratulations to Shane on both the great run and on the new addition to the
family this past week!
Wissota Street Stocks powered up next with Mark Froelich and Jason Vandekamp
lining the front row. Froelich hit the gas first to assume command as
Vandekamp settled into second with Chris Peterson finding the third spot
early. Froelich began edging away from the field until a caution waived
for a spin coming out of turn three. Froelich again darted off on the
restart as Peterson drove by Vandekamp for the second spot and began tracking
down Froelich out front. But it was not enough time as Froelich kept on
motoring and cruised home to the checkers ahead of Peterson, Vandekamp, Ron
Hanestad, and Jeff Nelson in fifth.
Wissota Modifieds were the next crew up as Troy Girolamo and Scott
Splittstoesser found themselves on the first row. After two first lap
yellows, the field finally got it right on the third try with Splittstoesser
humping the early lead as the field was literally four-wide behind him vying
for position. A yellow again flew two laps into the event for a spin
down the backstretch. It didn’t take Dave Cain two laps to blow by
leader Splittstoesser and assume command of the race. Not only did Cain
assume the point, he had pulled out to a near straightaway lead before pole
sitter Girolamo spun the 2G machine onto the turn two infield. On the
restart Cain was followed by Splittstoesser, Doug Gustafson, Craig Thatcher,
and Owen Grube. Cain again absolutely powered out front of the field to
a very comfortable lead and had the 2C machine on cruise control until a spin
in turn four brought the yellow out. The field got yet another chance to
jump Cain on the restart with Splittstoesser in second and 18th place starter
Joey Jensen rocketing into third spot, Brent Larson started 14th and he too
climbed into the top five. Cain felt pressure for about half the front
straightaway since by the time they hit turn one, Cain was already on his way
to a five car lead on the field and yet another impressive victory this
season.
Super Late Models thundered onto the speedway next with Mike Chamernick and
Toby Patchen leading the field to the green. As with the pattern thus
far in our feature event, a yellow flew on the first lap as the field having a
tough time getting that first lap in the books. The second try was much
better than the first as Brent Laursen found the fast line quickly and went
right to the front of the field. Paul Brust, Eric Breeschoten, Pat Doar,
and Brent Larson all settled into top five spots early. At the halfway
mark, Laursen still led Brust and Breeschoten by about three car
lengths. But the hot shoe on the speedway was Ashley Anderson running in
the fifth spot after starting 12th on the grid. By lap eighteen Laursen
had encounter some lapped traffic and got hung-up several times allowing
Breeschoten to pull even and drive past him for the lead on lap 20. Ron
Schreiner and Brent Larson got tangled in turn two bringing out the yellow
with nine laps to go. But the lead was short lived as under the caution,
the 66 machine broke the rear end and had to be towed pitside. That
handed the lead back to Laursen for a nine lap dash followed by Brust, Doar,
now Ashley Anderson, and Brent Larson in fifth. Doar and Laursen went
side-by-side right off the restart for two laps until Doar finally was able to
drive around for the lead. Brent Larson moved into second spot with two
laps to go as Steve Laursen was doing all he could to hang on to third
spot. But up front, with half the right rear missing from an early race
incident, Doar drove off to pick up the checkers!
Wissota Super Stocks rounded out the program with Cory Davis and Justin Dodge
out front of the field for their feature. Davis used the fast middle
groove to hold onto the lead ahead of Tim Borgeson, Greg Nippoldt, Ashley
Anderson, and Dodge. The first yellow flew for a seven car wreck up in
turn three slowing the field. Davis again led the field after a good
restart as Anderson and Borgeson went wheel-to-wheel for the second
spot. Anderson won that battle and began tracking down Davis out front
as the field took the halfway sticks. On the very next lap Anderson used
the topside to drive right on by Davis and assume the point. Behind them
Nippoldt had found the third spot ahead of Tom Crest and Larry Boumeister.
Boumeister was in a battle with about six cars for that fifth spot as the
time. But as the field battled for position, Anderson cruised off to yet
another Super Stock feature win here in 2005. Congratulations to Ashley
and his team on another impressive run.
