Wissota Cars Set High Expectations for Remainder of USA Nationals Weekend

New Richmond, WI; August 4th, 2005.  112 race teams comprised of Wissota Street Stocks, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, and Modifieds checked into the pits for night number one of this year’s 18th annual USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway.  That in addition approximately 50 Late Models that showed up to practice for Friday and Saturday’s big money USA Nationals and Super Late Model Pepsi Cup!  Mother Nature in full cooperation with absolutely perfect mid 80 degree temperature and low humidity in the forecast for the entire weekend.  That after a large lighting storm moved through the area Wednesday night with a lighting bolt striking the speedway and initially causing havoc with all electrical systems.  The anticipation could not be any higher for the World of Outlaws Late Model $40,000 to-win show not to mention the twin $5,000 to-win Pepsi Cup shows.

After a bunch of great heat races, Wissota Street Stocks were the first feature of the evening with Jim Gullikson and Chanda Fjorden-Nord redrawing the front row.  Gullikson held the early lead but not by much as last week’s feature winner, the first female feature winner in the history of CLS, Fjorden-Nord was glued right to his bumper.  The action was intense all over the speedway until the red flag flew on lap eight for a Darrell Hazelton rollover in turn two.  On the restart Gullikson picked up right where he left off, running away and hiding from the remainder of the field.  Fjorden-Nord tried to complete the double but she had her hands full with Chris Peterson who came on late to claim the second spot away.  Mark Froelich and Wayne Dean battled hard for several laps before Froelich was able to secure the fourth spot for the evening.  Gullikson had no trouble cruising home first to take the checkers.

Wissota Midwest Mods were up next as Dane Durbin and Mark Thomas lined the front row.  Coach Thomas drove out to an early advantage with Durbin, Vince Corbin, Scott Zavadil and Jim Schweitzer holding down the top five spots.  As the leaders hit the halfway mark, Durbin had closed the gap on Thomas and drove under the Coach in turns one and two on lap 10 to take the lead.  Thomas battled back hard going wheel to wheel with Durbin as the pair took the two-to-go sticks.  Behind them Kevin Adams came charging hard into the third spot and Dan Wheeler followed closely to come home fourth.  Durbin was just too strong near the end and held off Thomas to cross the stripe first and pick up the feature win.

Shaun Kelly and Joey Jensen hit the lottery and redrew front row starting spots for the Wissota Modified A feature.  Jensen bolted to the early lead in the V2 machine followed by Kelly and Dann Olson.  Doug Gustafson was about to make it a four car battle until the yellow flew for a pileup coming into turn two.  The lap two restart showed Kelly and Jensen again go wheel-to-wheel for the lead as Dann Olson saw the fun and made it a three car battle within a few laps.  The battle at the front let the field catch the leaders and next thing you know there was literally seven cars all battling for the second spot behind Jensen!  A yellow flag waived shortly thereafter again causing a restart with all those hot shoes in close pursuit of Jensen out front.  We weren’t five laps into the restart and Dave Cain drew up to and passed Jensen for the lead.  But not to be as the yellow waived on the pass lap, relegating the field back to the last completed lap in which Jensen was the leader.  On the restart with seven laps to go, Jensen led Cain, Thatcher, Tyler Keyser, Doug Gustafson, Kelley, and Jason Miller.  Jensen stuck to his guns and held the low line while Cain went upstairs to the cushion.  The pair was side by side for nearly five laps all the way up until the last lap as Jensen used the low line to hold off a rim riding Cain to come across the stripe first.  A great race as this thing could have legitimately been won by six or seven cars.  Congratulations to Jensen and his racing team.

The final race of the evening had Joe Nelson and Mike Weber on the front row for their Super Stock main event.  Weber was the first to the gas and led the field on the first lap followed by Nelson and Ashley Anderson.  Lap two was slowed by a yellow for a pileup coming out of turn three.  On the ensuing restart Weber began to drive away form the field as Anderson began his charge to the front, first knocking off Nelson the setting his sights on Weber out front.  Just as Anderson had caught Weber the caution flew again as Kevin Adams broke over in turn two.  On the restart Weber lead Anderson followed by Nelson, Dan Carlson and Cory Mahder in fifth.  Anderson immediately went right to the low side to get around Weber for the lead.  During the exchange, Mahder got by both Carlson and Nelson to move into third and within three laps had passed Weber for the second spot.  As the leader Anderson took the two to go, Mahder was literally pushing him down the front stretch.  But that was as close as Mahder could get as Anderson used the right line on the last lap to hold off Mahder and claim yet another feature win in 2005.
