32 Super Late Models Highlight Cedar Lake Racing Program
New Richmond, WI; July 24, 2005. Super Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway
started out a little slower than anticipated with a storm front moving through
the area about 11 o’clock and dumping over 2 inches of rain on the
speedway. Track crews worked feverishly to run the track into shape in
time to get the flat track Thunder Championship motorcycle program in; but to
no avail as the bikes had to be rescheduled for another date. However,
officials did get the track run in on time for the auto racing portion of the
event with 132 teams checking into the pit gate. A great field of 32
Super Late models lined the pits ready to battle one another.
After an evening full of action-packed heat races, the Wissota Midwest
Modifieds were the first feature of the evening with Charlie Hillukka and
Justin Schill on the front row. An early caution regrouped the field as
Justin Schill jumped out to an early advantage. Several more cautions
kept the field form getting a good long green flag run and a chance to catch
leader Justin Schill. Shane Halopka and Dan Wheeler battled over
several laps for the second spot. Ultimately Schill was too strong and
came across the stripe first to claim the feature win.
Wissota Modifieds were the next feature on tap with Dave Cain and Dave Friendt
bringing the field to the green. Cain used the top side to bolt out
front and put a healthy gap between himself and the field. Doug
Gustafson moved into second spot early with Craig Thatcher settling into
third. Cain continued to pull out to a bigger lead as Thatcher pulled
even and battled with Gustafson for second. Fifth place runner Jason
Miller came up late as the leaders had four laps to go. The caution
created a four lap shootout to the checkers with Gustafson and Thatcher
gunning for point man Cain. But it wasn’t to be this night as Cain was
again too fast for the field and came across the stripe to take the checkers
ahead of Gustafson and Thatcher.
Super Late Models took center stage next with a pair of Mike’s, Mike
Hesselink and Mike Bear redrawing the front row. Bear slid to the front
early with Joel Cryderman bolting into second. That was short lived
though as Eric Breeschoten got turned sideways down the backstretch and made
hard contact with the concrete. On the restart Bear clung to the lead
under heavy pressure from Cryderman and Brady Smith in the third spot.
Another restart a few laps later let the field again try to get by Bear, but
still the 24 machine held strong despite challenges from Cryderman and
Smith. By this time Steve Laursen had moved into the fourth spot with
Dave Cain running a strong fifth. Smith eventually got by Cryderman for
second and immediately went to work on Bear for the lead. Smith pulled
even with Bear on several occasions but wasn’t able to complete the pass as
Bear fought back. But on lap 27, Brady was able to again pull even but
this time got past Mike to take command of the top spot. Once out front
Smith used every inch of the racetrack to hold off Bear and company to take
the checkers and pick up his first Impact Printing Super Late Model feature
victory!
Wissota Super Stocks took the green next as Steve Thomas and Rich Bishop lined
the front row. Bishop used the high side to jump out front as Tom Crest
and Cory Davis began tracking him down. A nine car pileup in turn two
brought out the red flag as the racetrack was completely blocked from top to
bottom. Most of the machines involved were able to continue with light
damage. On the restart, Bishop stayed out front with Crest and Davis
still keeping him in check. A good battle behind them for the fourth
spot ensued with Mike Loomis and Corey Mahder trading paint over several
laps. The race was stopped several more times for caution flags as the
race was filled from start to finish with bumping and banging. The one
consistency was Bishop holding off all challenges from the competition to
finish in front of Tom Crest and Cory Davis to pick up the victory.
Congratulations to the Bishop racing team and sponsors.
Wissota Street stocks were the final event of the evening as Jeff Heintz and
Todd Reiken redrew front row starting spots. Heintz jumped out to an
early advantage with Mark Froelich and Jim Gullikson closing in very
quickly. On lap seven, your leader Heintz got sideways coming out of two
and the field bunched behind him bringing out the yellow. Chris Peterson
assumed the lead with Jim Gullikson close behind. The race stayed that
way until the final lap with Gullikson had caught Peterson but both got
tangled behind a lapped machine. Gullikson was able to get the advantage
coming down the backstretch and pick up the checkers as the pair crossed the
stripe. Certainly a crazy finish to a crazy evening of racing.
