Cedar Lake Action Intensifies With Summer Heat

July 9, 2005;  New Richmond, WI.  With temperatures soaring well into the 90’s; race fans at Cedar Lake were treated to a hot night of five class racing action.  112 race teams checked into the back gate and battled both one another and the heat to put on a great show for the fans who braved the muggy weather.  Tight races in all five season championship battles provided underlying tension as each position gained during an evening can make the difference for many of these teams in the overall standings.

It was also announced all Late Models at next weeks show, July 16th, will get their car and driver entrance fee paid for by Badger storage and Excavating of Superior.  Also for next week’s show, Cedar Lake is working with Rick Gondik Law offices to provide a $2,000 to win and $1,000 for second payday for the Super Late Models.  In addition, next week’s Late Model winner qualifies to win an additional bonus of $5,000 on each night of the Pepsi Cup in August.  That means if he can win either of the $5,000-to-win Pepsi Cup shows, he will pocket the additional $5,000 bonus for a $10,000 feature victory!  That bonus is open on both of the $5,000-to-win Pepsi Cup shows.  That would total $22,000 in winnings if next weeks winner wins both of the Pepsi Cup shows!

Wissota Modifieds were the first feature of the evening with Brandon Jensen and Jason Schill redrawing front row starting spots.  On the drop of the green Jensen put his foot to the floor and powered out front to a four or five car length lead on the field.  Dann Olson, Dave Cain, Steve Arpin, and Craig Thatcher settled in behind him.  As the field caught Jensen, Olson blew by for the lead from Jensen then quickly gave it up to Cain on a lap five pass.  A pair of cautions slowed the race early as the track was just groomed and progressed into a very fast and smooth racing surface.  By lap 10, Cain was out front and had the 2c machine on autopilot with Thatcher coming hard in second, Olson in third, Jason Miller running fourth, and Doug Gustafson holding down fifth.  Miller drove around Olson for third as the field hit lap 15.  Cain took the two-to-go sticks well out in front of the field that was using about six distinct lines around the speedway to slice and dice for positions.  Cain then cruised off to yet another impressive feature win in 2005.  Thatcher and Miller followed Cain across the stripe to claim respective podium finishes.  Congratulations again to Dave and his team.

Super late Models were up next with Mike Nutzmann and Paul Brust leading the field to the green.  Nutzmann, who was in his backup car jumped to the early lead but it was short-lived as Brust fought back and retook the point on lap two.  A lap three caution slowed the field for Carter Gerlach’s breakdown in turn two.  On the ensuing restart Nutzmann again powered back around Brust for the lead; but that lead again was short-lived as Trent Follmer found the topside of the racetrack and flat-footed it by about four cars to take the lead on lap seven.  Point’s leader Joel Cryderman found a line he liked and moved into second behind Follmer and began the process on tracking him down.  Brent Laursen raced into third followed by Nutzmann and Jim Carlson in the fifth spot.  At the halfway point it was still all Follmer, but Cryderman was stalking him like a old lion stalks a young gazelle in the jungle.  Each lap the veteran Cryderman inched closer to the young-gun leader until a caution slowed the field for debris on the front stretch on lap 20.

The restart with 10 to go showed Follmer hit the high line and keep the top spot as Cryderman tired the low line.  The battle ensued until and lap 23 caution flew as Pat Doar got tangled with Paul Brust battling for the fourth spot.  Brust broke the right front and was retired for the evening as Doar was charged with the caution which relegated him to the tail of the field.  On the restart Follmer again maintained the point using the high line as Cryderman, Laursen, Nutzmann, and now Joey Jensen were all trying to track him down.  Despite the best efforts of Cryderman and company, Follmer raced off the pick up his first Super Late Model feature victory at Cedar Lake.  Congratulations to Trent, his teams, and all their sponsors.

Wissota Super Stocks were up next with Chris Gorka and Charlie Weber on the front row.  A good start was nullified by a lap three caution for a melee in turn two.  Gorka was credited with being the leader at the time so he led the field to the green for the restart.  That lead did not last long as your leaders went four wide for the point as Steve Thomas, Rich Bishop, and Dan Carlson all joined Gorka at the front.  Thomas powered past the group and assumed command of the field with Bishop, Carlson, now Tim Borgeson, and Gorka all settling in that running order.  By lap 10, Bishop was side-by-side with Thomas for the lead at the stripe.  After a pair of yellows for crashes in the speedway, Thomas was doing all he could to hold off Bishop and Carlson as the three went three-wide for the lead on lap 13.  Borgeson then closed on the leaders and decided it would be fun if he threw his hat in the mix to make it four-wide for the lead.  Bishop saw his opening right between Thomas and Carlson and never lifted to take the lead with three laps to go.  Once out front Bishop rode the cushion to the feature win ahead of Carlson, Borgeson, Mike Weber who came from 17th, and Gorka in the fifth spot.

Wissota Street Stocks were the next feature on tap with Jason Vandekamp and Jeff Heintz adorning the front row.  Keith Tourville took the early lead motoring around the high side as Vandekamp, Jim Gullikson, and Chris Peterson all lined him up.  Peterson found the fast way around the speedway as he powered to the front but soon felt competition from Gullikson.  That competition proved to be a little too much at Gullikson drove around Peterson to take the lead away on lap 8.  Gullikson then used the clean air he inherited to drive away and pick up the feature win followed by Peterson, Tourville, Vandekamp, and Ron Hanestad.

Wissota Midwest Modifieds were the final feature of the evening with Bryan Siercks and Lonnie Louschke out front.  A multi-car pileup on lap one negated the start.  On the second try, Siercks maintained the point but had a lot of company as Louschke, Corbin, Ryan Olson all wanted a piece of the lead.  At the halfway mark, your leader Siercks got tangled with Dan Wheeler coming out of turn three, sending Siercks spinning and ultimately to the back of the field for the restart.  Louschke inherited the lead but felt immediate heat from both Wheeler and Durbin for the lead.  Wheeler powered past Louschke on lap nine to assume command of the race.  Once Wheeler found that clean air he had no trouble hiding from Durbin and company to take the checkers.  Wheeler came home in front of Durbin, Louschke, Olson, and Clark Perry.
