Fireworks In The Sky And On The Track At Cedar Lake Speedway

July 2, 2005;  New Richmond, WI.  The Cedar Lake Speedway Firecracker special is upon us with a bang.  Fireworks lit the sky and provided the perfect backdrop for action packed racing on the track below.  With 117 cars checked into the pits between Super Late Models, Wissota Streets, Supers, and Midwest Mods, the competition was even more intense than usual.  An absolutely perfect day set the stage for the great crowd who came to watch both the action on and off the track.  Wissota Modifieds had the night off but will be back in action with the legendary World of Outlaws sprint car series Monday night, July 4th for the second half of the Firecracker weekend.

Wissota Midwest Mods were the first feature of the evening as Dan Wheeler and Carth Mitchell lined the front row.  Wheeler found the fast line and jumped out to an early lead with Erik Peterson and Mitchell holding down the next two spots.  A pair of restarts early bunched the field up as the track was just graded and came up exceptionally smooth and fast for the four features this evening.  Wheeler held strong through a challenge from Peterson on lap five as the pair battled for several laps.  Behind them, Mitchell was running a strong third holding off Ryan Olson and Dane Durbin.  Another caution on lap 11 brought out the yellow as points leader Shawn Phillips made an early exit for the pits creating an excellent point opportunity for race leader Wheeler.  On the restart, Peterson tried the high side around Wheeler but to no avail as Wheeler held on for a strong feature win tonight.

Wissota Street Stocks were up next as Rod Debernardeaux and Corey Rosen redrew the front row for their feature.  Debernardeaux used the low side to hang on to the point as Jim Gullikson was close in toe and pulled even as the pair took the halfway mark.  A yellow flew for a spin in turn two that set up a six lap dash to the finish with Debernardeaux trying to hold off hard chargers Gullikson, Chris Peterson, and Rosen all running side-by-side for second.  As those three battled it out for second, it let Debernardeaux slip away into the night.  Just as Debernardeaux thought he had it wrapped up, the dreaded caution flew with two laps left.  On the restart, Gullikson threw everything but the kitchen sink at Debernardeaux to get by, but just couldn’t make it stick as the X3 machine and Debernardeaux cruised of to a great feature win!  Congrats to Rod and his racing team.

Wissota Super Stocks thrilled the crowd next with Ryan Wiome and Chris Gorka leading the field to the green.  The track at this point was smooth, fast, and extremely racy as the CLS track crew did a first rate job of mid-race prep after a rainy week of weather.  Gorka used the top side to jump of to the point early but had immediate pressure from Mike Loomis and Ashley Anderson.  Gorka jumped the cushion in turn two and that let both Loomis and Anderson get by.  Anderson then went right to work on Loomis, using the low side to pull even with the leader and eventually drive past on lap 10.  A great battle behind those two with Wiome, Dan Carlson, and Tom Crest all trading paint for the third spot until a yellow came out with 10 laps in and 10 to go.  Loomis was given the point for the restart and that battle with Anderson quickly resumed with Loomis motoring up top and Anderson digging hard down low.  Carlson assumed command of that third spot with Wiome and Rick Simpson setting into fifth.  Anderson finally got enough of a run to slide past Loomis and took the lead on lap 15.  That was all he needed as he got into that clean air and drove off to another fast feature win in 2005.

Impact Printing Super Late Models were the last event of the evening with Steve Laursen and Super Stock feature winner Ashley Anderson redrawing the front row.  Rapid Ron Schreiner was the man on the move driving out to the point with Joel Cryderman, Pat Doar, and Anderson all chasing him down.  A bad pileup in turn two brought out the caution with several fast cars not being able to continue.  Schreiner resumed command of the race on the restart but did not get out front very far as Cryderman and Doar set up camp right on his rear bumper.  Behind them Brent Larson and Steve Laursen were going at it hard for the fourth spot at the halfway mark.  On lap 17 Cryderman threw a mean slide job on Schreiner coming out of turn four to assume command of the lead.  Schreiner did not go far and he fought right back to battle with Doar for the second spot.  A caution flew on lap 19 and created an 11 lap dash to the checkers and an extra big payday thanks to Semple Building movers and Lou Fegers Racing who each added significant cash to the purse for the late models.  Cryderman showed just how strong he was on the restart as he jumped out to a several car advantage on both Schreiner and Doar.  Brent Larson and Anderson again were battling for the fourth spot as Mike Chamernick spun up in turn three bring out the yellow with only three laps left.  Fans were given a slip when they came in the gates asking them to pick tonight’s Trifecta for the late model feature.  If anyone could pick the top three finishers, in order, of the late model feature, they win $250!  Anyone who picked Cryderman, Schreiner, and Doar was literally pulling their hair out at this point.  On the restart, Doar drove to the inside of Schreiner for second, but that let Cryderman slip off into the night to pick up the feature win and nice payday.  The track remained racy throughout the entire race which provided for great racing from front to back.  Congrats to Joel on the win and extension of the points lead.
