Cedar Lake Speedway Regroups After Great Masters And Prepares For Firecracker Weekend
June 25, 2005. New Richmond, WI. A regular night of racing was on
hand tonight following the Masters show was last weekend and the Firecracker
weekend up next. 120 cars checked into the pit area ready to put on
another great night of entertainment. Super Late models brought another
great car count with 27 machines checking into the back gate – only one car
less than the highest car count of 28 in the Super Stock division.
Mother Nature is beginning to cooperate a bit more by giving us another great
evening to go racing. Next weekend is action-packed with the Firecracker
special on Saturday night and the World of Outlaw Sprint cars returning on
Monday, the fourth of July!
Wissota Street Stocks were the first feature of the night as Jeff Heintz and
Jason Vandekamp lined the front row. Vandekamp battled with Heintz for
the lead on the opening lap and gained the position on lap two. As
Vandekamp began to edge away from the field, Heintz found a new battle for
second with Jim Gullikson and Charlie Novak. The three traded spots for
several laps before Gullikson slid by and Novak quickly followed to take the
third spot from Heintz. Vandekamp in the meantime used the ensuing
battles to pull away from Gullikson and company. Just as the two-to-go
signal came out, a breakdown by Jeremy Schreiner in turn three brought out the
caution and created a two lap shootout to the checkers. Vandekamp led
the field to the green as Gullikson made his move heading into turn three but
got a little crossed up and ended up driving across the infield back onto the
front stretch. Vandekamp said thank you very much and drove off to his
first ever Feature win here at Cedar Lake Speedway! Congratulations to
Jason and his team.
Wissota Modifieds took the green next as Troy Giralamo and Jason Miller showed
the way to the stripe. Brent Larson caught the leaders sleeping on the
start and drove by the pair to claim the point. Larson used the bottom
to pull a few car lengths away from Jason Miller in second and Dann Olson in
third. Miller began putting pressure on Larson by lap eight as Dave Cain
moved by Olson. A lap nine caution bunched the field with a few hot
shoes making moves throughout the field. On the restart, Dave Cain
wasted no time showing his hand as he went three wide for the lead with Miller
and Larson. Cain used the cushion to power past the two but Miller went
with and began putting pressure on Cain for the point. Larson, Thatcher,
and Olson rounded out the top five with Doug Gustafson and Steve Arpin making
their presence know in a battle for sixth. As Cain and Miller took the
white, Miller made a turn three move to the outside of Cain to put the pair
side by side at the stripe with Cain edging out Miller by half a car
length! Yet another great modified race decided on the final lap.
The big dog Super Late Models thundered onto the speedway next with one of
last weeks’ Masters standouts in Trent Follmer on the pole and Steve
Hucovski to his outside. A first turn pileup brought out the caution so
the field lined up and tried it again. This time they made the
three-wide formation work as Steve Laursen used the bottom side to his
advantage and drove into the lead with a rim riding Pat Doar coming hard in
second. By lap five Joel Cryderman had moved into third with Mike Bear
and Trent Follmer filing the top five spots. By lap 10, Laursen had
moved into a comfortable 10 car length lead on Doar but began encountering
lapped traffic. Cryderman still remained a solid third with Follmer
moving around Bear to take fourth away.
The best battle on the track was for fifth as Bear was doing all he could to
hold off Ron Schreiner and Mike Nutzmann as the group traded positions for
multiple laps. Schreiner eventually walked away from that battle to take
the fifth spot as the caution came out for a Jeff Patchen breakdown in turn
two. Laursen led the field to the green for an eight lap shootout.
Doar jumped to the cushion on the restart and used the momentum to drive by
Laursen to take the point as Cryderman, Follmer, and Schreiner rounded out the
top five positions. Doar began pulling away as Laursen tried everything
he could to get by the 11 machine, but to no avail as Doar was just too much
and took the checkers for a solid payday and feature win.
Wissota Super Stocks followed the late model show with Brent Mueller and Ryan
Wiome making up the front row. As the field came across to complete lap
two, the caution came out which negated Mike Weber’s move to the point and
relegated him back to fifth. The restart put Dan Carlson on the pole and
Mueller in second. Carlson began edging away form the field but the
field paid little attention as they were stacked up two and three wide
behind. Danny Thomas and Steve Thomas traded paint for the second spot
over several laps with Weber, Mueller, and Ashley Anderson going at it for the
fourth spot. The battle for fourth got a little too intense as Anderson
and Steve Thomas got tangled heading into turn three which damaged both
machines sending both to the pits for the remainder of the evening. The
ensuing restart showed Danny Thomas take the lead away from Carlson with ten
laps remaining. Carlson was anything but done as he kept the pressure
on, but Rich Bishop found another gear and came out of the pack to power into
third spot until a caution with four laps left again bunched the field.
Thomas led the field to the green and went two more laps until a lap 18
caution for a pileup in turn two brought out yet another yellow. The
restart went smooth and continued that way onto the checkers as Danny Thomas
cruised on to a feature win for the first time since 2001 followed by Carlson,
Bishop, Weber, and Greg Nippoldt.
Wissota Midwest Mods rounded out the evening with Vince Corbin and Bryan
Siercks redrawing the front row. Corbin was unable to make the call so
Brandon Lampert assumed command of the field. Lampert jumped out to an
early advantage but was quickly challenged by Siercks and a hard charging
Phillips. Carth Mitchell showed his hand early as he joined the lead
pack in a battle for the lead with Lampert and Phillips as the caution came
out for a spin on lap five. On the restart, Phillips drove by Lampert
for the lead and took Mitchell and Durbin with. A great battle for the
lead was halted when the caution flew for a spin and created a three lap dash
to the finish. Mitchell was given the point for the restart with
Phillips and Durbin close in tow. That was all the advantage Mitchell
needed and he drove off to a feature win by several car lengths over Phillips
and Dan Wheeler coming all the way from the 22nd starting spot.
Congratulations to Carth and his racing team.
