O誰eal and Johnson Score Big on Spectacular Masters Show

June 17, 2005.  New Richmond, WI.  Cedar Lake Speedway played host to the 7th annual Masters event and drew yet another great crowd for the new format this year.  A great field of 53 Late Models consisting of NARA, WDRL, and local race teams checked into the pits and combined to make up six competitive heat races.  Late Model heat winners included Don O誰eal, Kyle Burke, Jimmy Mars, Brian Birkhoffer, Shannon Babb, and Donnie Moran.  The top 18 spots for the A main were determined by a point system comprised of heat finishing position and number of cars passed.  IRA Outlaw 410 Sprint cars made up the other half of the 7th annual Masters event.  IRA sprint car heat race winners included Wayne Johnson, Ricky Logan, Jim Melis, and Todd Hepfner.  The IRA Outlaws put on four spectacular heat races and the top ten positions for the A Main were redrawn.

Late Models not finishing in the top 3 were put into twin B mains looking to make it to the big money $10,000 to win feature later on.  In the first B main, Brady Smith, Earl Pearson Jr, Duane Mahder, and Matt Miller put on a great show battling for the two transfer spots.  Pearson took the checkers with Mahder getting by Smith coming off turn four to get the second and final transfer spot.  The second B feature saw Tim Dohm lay a torrid pace and run off to the win with Eric Pember holding on in a close battle for second.  The Late Model dash set the top eight starting spots for the A main and saw Brian Birkhoffer take the checkers and secure the pole position for the $10,000 to win race.  The IRA outlaws also ran twin B features with the top three moving up to the A main.  Joe Roe took the first B main win with Kurt Davis coming home second.  In the second qualifier, Jerry Richert Jr drove away from the field to pick up the win with Scott Biertzer bringing the 4b machine home in the second spot.

The $10,000 to win Late Model feature was the next event on the speedway with Brian Birkhoffer and Jimmy Mars adorning the front row.  Birky jumped out to an early lead with O誰eal challenging him for the lead by lap three.  Kyle Berck was holding down a solid third with Donnie Moran and Scott James in the next two spots.  O誰eal was consistently putting pressure on Birky until a lap 13 caution for an Eric Breeschoten breakdown.  Donnie Moran made it four wide going into turn one on the restart and powered past Birky and company for the lead with a power move.  Matt Miller and Earl Pearson sliced through the field after starting near the back to move into the eighth and ninth spots respectively.

Moran used the clean air to gain a five car advantage over Birky and O誰eal at the halfway mark.  Scott James and Jimmy Mars both were digging hard in the fourth and fifth spots as the leaders negotiated lapped traffic.  By lap 36, Birky had caught Moran and went side-by-side in turn one with O誰eal only a length behind.  But a breakdown by Moran going into turn one a lap later gave the lead back to Birky.  The lead was extremely short lived as O誰eal used the top side to power around Birky for the lead.  Jimmy Mars joined the battle three laps later and split the two coming off four to take the lead with four to go!  But the race was far from over as both Birky and O誰eal stayed glued to Mars痴 rear end.  O誰eal pulled even with Mars as they took the white flag.  Jimmy used the low side as O誰eal rode the cushion through turns one and two.  The pair drove side-by-side into turn three and continued that way out of four and headed to the strip.  O誰eal used the top side momentum to beat Mars to the line by half a car length to claim the victory and the $10,000 payday!  Congratulations to O誰eal, his team and sponsors.

The IRA Outlaw 410 sprint cars had a tough act to follow as the crown never ever had a chance to sit down after the amazing late model finish.  Scott Young redrew the pole with Scott Neitzel to his outside as the pair led the field to the green.  Scotty Neitzel powered to the point on lap one as Young stayed close in tow.  A great slid job in turn three on lap five put Young ahead of Neitzel for that top spot.  The leaders began encountering lapped traffic by lap eight.  The leader Young lost the cushion in turn three and hit the wall, giving up the lead back to Neitzel in the process.  Wayne Johnson caught Neitzel in the process and slid past on lap 16 with a great move coming out of turn two.  A spin in turn three caused a may lay that included Kurt Davis doing a barrel roll in the 6k machine.  Davis was OK but his machine was unable to continue.  On the restart Johnson maintained the lead with Neitzel, Ricky Logan and Young went three wide for second behind him.  But too little too late as Johnson powered off into the sunset for a solid feature win ahead of Neitzel, Logan, Travis Whitney, and Young.  A great race for the IRA crew and the best part is we get to see it all again tomorrow night.
