Great Night One Action Sets Tone for Action-Packed Masters Weekend

June 16, 2005.  New Richmond, WI.  With Mother Nature finally cooperating and providing an absolutely perfect evening for racing, Cedar Lake opening up its 7th annual Masters event.  A complete show for Wissota Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, and Street Stocks combined with practice for the NARA & WDRL late models brought out a good number of both race cars and race fans.  The four classes checked in with 118 race cars and provided a number of great side by side heat races.

Wissota Midwest Mods were the first feature of the evening with Dan Wheeler sitting on the pole and Lucus Hines on the outside of row one.  Wheeler moved to the front but a lap one caution brought the field to a restart.  On the restart, Wheeler wasted no time in again jumping to the point but was receiving heavy pressure from Jeff Marshall in the 112 machine and Hines in third.  Jim Berglend was a hot shoes and he hit the fifth spot by lap eight.  A lap nine spin in turn four collected all three leaders in Wheeler, Marshall, and Hines.  Marshall sustained the most damage and was unable to continue.  The restart was very similar to the first with Wheeler pulling away from the field.  Dane Durbin made his presence known but was unable to get past Hines and challenge Wheeler as he took the checkers a couple car lengths ahead of Hines.

Wissota Modifieds were the next field up with Tyler Keyser and Jim Chyba adorning the front row.  Jason Miller used the top side to jump from the fourth starting spot into the lead on lap one followed by Dave Cain.  Cain used the cushion to put pressure on Miller for the lead until a bad lap three crash involving Steve Arpin and John Corell brought out the red flag.  Both drivers walked away from the incident but sustained heavy damage to the machines.  On the restart, Cain again used the top side to drive around Miller into the lead and essentially left Miller and the field in his dust.  By lap nine, Thatcher had moved into third with Keyser holding down a solid fourth spot.  Cain came upon lapped traffic and calmly sliced his way through and on to another feature win in 2005.  The best battle was for third as Thatcher edged out Keyser for the spot with Miller easily coming home second.

Wissota Super Stocks took the green next as Dan Gullikson and Justin Dodge led the field to the stripe.  Gullikson darted to the front and Cory Davis tucked in behind and Tim Borgerson came hard from the sixth starting spot into third within the first few laps.  A lap seven caution bunched the competitive field with Gullikson using the low line to keep his lead as Borgerson and Davis traded paint in turn two.  Borgerson and Davis then went three wide with Dan Carlson for second spot.  Carlson slipped by and began moving up on Gullikson.  Back in the pack Rich Bishop came all the way from last on the field to sixth with seven laps to go.  Carlson used the cushion to push Gullikson to his limit and eventually used momentum from turn two to get by with four laps left.  Bishop moved into the fourth spot before a breakdown by Davis brought out the yellow with two laps left.  Carlson kept the lead initially but Bishop threw a great slide job on Carlson coming out of turn four to take the checkers no more than three feet ahead of Carlson.  This was one of the best Super Stock races I have seen in a while!

Wissota Street Stocks were the final event of he evening as Mark Froelich and Jim Gullikson sat on the front row.  Froelich took out into the lead but had Gullikson literally glued to his rear bumper.  By lap 10, Gullikson had pulled even down the front stretch and got by in turn two for the lead.  But that lead was short lived as Gullikson lost the handle in turn four and spun the 2 machine onto the infield.  As Froelich regained the lead, Jason Vandecamp pulled even with Froelich for the lead with a lap left.  Vandekamp and Froelich traded paint all through turns three and four before Froelich edged ahead at the stripe to pick up the feature win.
