Rainy Afternoon Leads To Great Feature Action At Cedar Lake Speedway
June 4, 2005. New Richmond, WI. With Mother Nature again trying to
put a damper on the racing program at Cedar Lake, a great turnout of race
teams put on another fun show for the fans in attendance. With the Pepsi
Cup rained out last weekend, the race teams were geared up and ready to go
racing again. With most of the Midwest getting sporadic rain throughout
the day, the races looked as though they might get called again. But
Cedar Lake persevered, dried the track, packed it in, and was able to provide
yet another fun evening of entertainment. After a number of
action-packed heat races, the five features took to the track.
Wissota Street Stocks were the first feature to take the green flag as Chris
Peterson and Steve Golat adorned the front row. This race belonged to
Peterson from the minute the green flag fell as he had the lead heading into
turn one and never looked back. The rest of the field gave chase but
never amounted to much. Corey Rosen and Golat were the next two closest
competitors but Peterson took the checkers 12 car lengths ahead of the field.
Wissota Modifieds took the green next with Jamie Davis and Dave Sierks on the
front row. A lap one caution slowed the field as Joey Jenson smacked the
wall. Davis had mechanical problems and lined up at the back of the
field. On the restart, Brent Larson motored to the point with Dave Cain
coming hard in second. By lap four, Cain had put his bumper right on
Larson’s and wanted to slip by. A great move to the inside of Larson
on lap seven put Cain out into clean air. As Cain began putting distance
between himself and Larson, Craig Thatcher was making a charge and took over
the third spot by getting around Jason Miller. By lap 15, Thatcher had
driven by Larson for second but Cain was long gone. Miller had
mechanical problems on lap 18 and pulled off. Cain proceeded to drive
home to a solid feature win.
Super Late models were the next class up for their feature as Mike Nutzmann
and Jon Chrest took the green out front. Nutzmann darted to the point
followed by Steve Laursen. By lap four Laursen had pulled even with
Nutzmann for the lead, but Nutzmann held his ground and maintained the
spot. A great battle developed with Pat Doar and Paul Brust joining the
battle for the top spot. By lap twelve the group went four-wide for the
lead as you could have thrown a blanket over the whole group. A caution
then waived as outside pole sitter Jon Chrest made hard contact with the front
stretch wall. On the restart, Nutzmann held strong as the field
challenged hard. But as the leaders encountered lapped traffic, Laursen
put a great move on Nutzmann and used a lapped car as a shield. The
caution waived a lap later as Nutzmann spun the 2 car in turn four and as a
result damaged the front suspension on the machine. Laursen took the
green on the lap 26 restart with Doar pulling even on the backstretch.
The two went literally side-by-side for the remaining three laps Laursen used
the top-side momentum to beat Doar to the line by a car length. Another
great Super Late Model race from start to finish!
Wissota Super Stocks had a tough show to follow as Dan Gullikson and Cory
Davis brought the field to the green. A lap two caution slowed the field
as outside pole sitter Davis blew a front tire. On the restart,
Gullikson motored out to the lead as Tony Gates began to apply pressure with
Steve Hallquist not far behind. The top three stayed that way until a
lap 1 caution bunched up the field. On the restart Gates pulled even
with Gullikson for the lead and battled for the next few laps. Gullikson
held strong and as he finally fended off Gates’ charge, Mike Weber moved
into second and wanted a piece of the lead. Again Gullikson battled off
a challenger and held on to win the feature with Weber and Hallquist following
him across the strip. Congratulations to Dan Gullikson and his team.
Wissota Midwest Modifieds rounded out the evening with Trent Brutger and Shawn
Phillips bringing the field to the green. Brutger took off into the lead
from the pole and looked strong as he began walking away from the field.
But by lap eight, Brutger had company as Erik Peterson came from the third
spot to challenge for the lead. A nice move to the high side put
Peterson to the point and a hard charging Dan Wheeler all the way from the
12th starting spot into second place. Once out front, Peterson decided
he had enough and drove away from Wheeler and the field to pick up the feature
win. Wheeler followed home for second and Clark Perry took the third
spot.
