Cedar Lake Action Heats Up Another Chilly April Evening
April 30, 2005. New Richmond, WI. While Mother Nature was keeping
the upper Midwest under an icy grip, Cedar Lake Speedway and its faithful fans
were again treated to a great night of early season racing. A great car
turnout of 161 teams filled the pit area including 30 Midwest Mods, 33
Streeters, 39 Sunoco Super Stocks, 32 Polydome Modifieds, and 27 Impact
Printing Super Late Models. The track has weathered the cold spring well
up to this point and is beginning to take on its midseason racy form.
The Polydome Modifieds sparked up the chilly night with the first feature
action of the evening. Jamie Lemke and Dave Sierks led the stacked field
to the green with some hot shoes in close pursuit. Lemke darted to the
front but Craig Thatcher applied early pressure. A caution on lap five
allowed Thatcher to draw close and in less than a lap had squeezed by Lemke
for the lead. Once in clean air, Thatcher checked out on second place
runner Jason Gross and the rest of the field. By lap 12, Steve Arpin had
slid into third and began putting pressure on Gross for second. A lap 16
caution for a spin in turn three bunched up the field and made for an exciting
restart. A great restart by Arpin allowed him to pull even with Thatcher down
the backstretch, but Arpin jumped the cushion in turn four. As Arpin
slid back to fourth, Joey Jensen laid his hand and tried to run down
Thatcher. A great show to watch at a minimum, but Thatcher was again the
car to beat for a second week in a row. Thatcher took the checkers
followed closely by Gross and Jensen.
Eric Breeschoten redrew the pole for the Impact Printing Super Late Model
feature with John Kaanta on the outside. Breeschoten wasted no time
jumping to the lead with Kaanta and Pat Doar in hot pursuit. By lap
eight Kaanta had caught Breeschoten and drove on by. Kaanta showed his
strength and pulled out to a 5 car lead, but the real battle was for third
between Doar and Mike Nutzmann. Good thing both Doar’s and
Nutzmann’s machines wear black as a primary color as they must have traded
paint five times over a handful of laps. Lap 18 showed Breeschoten pulling
even and even briefly peaking around Kaanta, but it was short lived as Kaanta
powered back around as the pair navigated lapped traffic. A yellow
waived on lap 21 to bunch up the field. On the restart, Nutzmann made a
great move in turn one to grab second spot. Meanwhile the second, third,
and fourth spots were traded repeatedly between Breeschoten, Brent Larson, and
Nutzmann. Kaanta had little pressure as he grabbed his first feature win
at CLS in 2005 followed by Nutzmann and Larson. However, post race
inspections found Kaanta to have a G50 on the right front when the rule for
the weekend was a G45. Kaanta was disqualified giving the win to Mike
Nutzmann.
Sunoco Super Stocks took the green next with Greg Nippoldt and Rich Bishop
adorning the front row. Bishop turned on the afterburners at the cone
and literally left the field in his dust. By lap five, Bishop had over a
10 car lead on Nippoldt and Tim Borgerson. A caution on lap 7 allowed
the field to catch Bishop, but that was short lived as Bishop again rocketed
out to a comfortable lead with three-wide racing throughout the pack, By
lap 15, Bishop was long gone as Borgerson and Nippoldt swapped second place
several times. Danny Thomas came charging from mid-pack and landed in
third behind Borgerson. Bishop cruised to the feature victory as Thomas
snuck by Borgerson on the last lap to come home second.
Wissota Street Stocks came to the green next with Steve Golot and Corey Rosen
showing the way. By lap two, a four-wide battle for the lead had
developed. A lap three caution ended that show with Rosen taking the
restart out front. Rosen took the lead with Jim Gullikson applying
pressure. A lap 10 caution negated a lead change when Gullikson had
moved around Rosen in turn two. Three wide racing ensued after the
restart as Chris Peterson joined the lead group. As the laps wound down,
Peterson proved to be the strongest this night as he powered by Rosen coming
out of turn two and went on to pick up the checkers followed by Rosen and
Gullikson.
Wissota Midwest Modifieds concluded the night with Dan Wheeler and Dane Durbin
leading the field to the green. Wheeler drove out to the lead with Steve
Arpin coming from fourth to put pressure on Wheeler. A good battle
ensued between the two for the lead as a lap six pass by Arpin was followed by
a caution on lap seven. The restart provided the field little help of
catching Arpin as he again tired to run and hide from the field. Wheeler
continued to reel in Arpin, but could not get within striking distance in
time. Ryan Olson came on strong at the end to get past Wheeler for
second on the last lap after starting eighth. Arpin cruised to victory
to pick up his second feature in as many weeks in the division.
