Jam-Packed Pit Area Leads To Action-Packed Evening At Cedar Lake Speedway

New Richmond, WI.  April 23, 2005.  Although temperatures were dipping into the 30’s, that didn’t stop a large number of racers from checking into a highly competitive field of racecars Saturday night at the legendary Cedar Lake Speedway.  174 race cars showed up to chase a much coveted early season win and establish themselves as a contender in 2005.  33 Wissota Winged-Warrior Sprint cars returned to the field after being rained out last weekend.  This was also the first event where the new Impact Printing Super Late Models were required to sport the Goodyear Racing Eagle tires.

Wissota Modifieds were the first feature to take the green flag after a whole stack of great heat races and B-Features.  Tyler Keyser and Paul Harelstad lined the front row as the cold evening quickly heated up with feature action.  Harelstad jumped immediately to the front followed by Dann Olson.  By lap nine, Tyler Keyser had pulled even with Harelstad but broke down in turn 2.  On the restart, a great battle for the lead developed with Craig Thatcher trading paint with Harelstad for over 3 solid laps.  By lap 15 Thatcher had driven on by and began pulling away when a caution fell over the field.  On the restart, Thatcher found another gear and kissed the field goodbye.  With the victory, Thatcher picked up his first feature win of the season in defense of his Wissota National Point title.

Mike Nutzmann and Joel Cryderman showed the Impact Printing Super Late Models to the green flag for their feature event.  Nutzmann took off early but Cryderman motored by on the outside.  Cryderman tried to run off and hide but a lap five caution slowed the field.  On the restart, Cryderman literally checked out on the field, but the race for second was just beginning.  Nutzmann found a hard challenge from Brent Larson and swapped positions multiple times over a five lap period.  A Caution for Justin Fegers on lap 25 left the field primed for a five lap shootout.  Nutzmann drove it hard into a few corners trying to slip past Cryderman but couldn’t make it stick.  With Cryderman driving off into the sunset, Pat Doar, Nutzmann, and Larson battled for second.  Cryderman took the checkers followed by Nutzmann, Larson, Doar, and a hard charging Trent Follmer.

Wissota Sprint Cars hit the speedway next with Chuck Swenson and Lauren Langerud getting on the gas first.  Heading into turn three on the first lap, Jay Rickert went end-over-end out of the ballpark.  He was OK, but the car certainly was not.  On the restart, Lauren Langerud sprinted out into the lead with Swenson in toe.  The lead didn’t last long as Swenson powered around him and took off into a sizable lead.  As the field sliced through lapped traffic, the lead was slowly widdled away.  A good battle ensued but Swenson held onto the lead as they hit the white flag.  As the duo entered turn three, Langerud just kept his foot in the gas and drove past Swenson on the last 50 feet before the strip.  An amazing finish and victory for Langerud after what seemed like a sure win for Swenson.

Superstocks were up next with Cory Mahder and Tim Borgerson adorning the front row.  Borgerson wasted no time in his quest to assume the lead and showed the way through the first 11 laps.  Borgerson had built up a nice lead on second place runner Maher when the caution came out on lap eleven.  The restart bunched up Borgerson, Mahder, Mike Weber, Kelly Anderson, and Cory Davis.  The restart still didn’t allow the field to touch Borgerson as he again walked away.  A good battle between Mahder and Weber for the second spot was fun to watch, but Mahder was too strong.  On the last lap, Anderson was able to drive around Weber to finish third.  Borgerson was clearly the class of the field on this night.  Congratulations to him and his team.

Wissota Midwest Modifieds rounded out the evening as they took the green flag with Dan Graham and Steve Arpin showing the way.  Arpin showed his strength early and bolted out front of the field.  A slew of cautions slowed the race several times.  After each restart, Arpin showed the way but soon had company at the front when Troy Jordan made it a party.  Jason Schill came on hard from the 10th spot to get to second, but even he couldn’t get close to Arpin.
