Dan Gullikson And Mike Weber Crowned 2003 Track Champions At Cedar Lake Speedway!
by Bob Peine
New Richmond, WI.- It was track championship night for WISSOTA Street Stocks
and Super Stocks at Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday night. Dan Gullikson
topped the Street Stock division and Mike Weber was the Super Stock
champion.
The first feature event of the night was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event.
Chris Peterson grabbed the lead from the start, chased by Dan Gullikson and
Chris Gullikson. Ron Hanestad pressure Chris Gullikson for third, and the top
five cars started to break away from the field. Jason Vandekamp was keeping
pace with Hanestad, and Peterson continued to lead Chris and Dan Gullikson.
Dan Gullikson started to close in on Peterson and looked to the inside but
could not complete the pass. Hanestad got by Chris Gullikson on lap 10 to take
over third, and Vandekamp also would get by to take fourth. Peterson scored
the win, followed by track champion Dan Gullikson, Hanestad, Vandekamp, and
Chris Gullikson rounding out the top five.
Mike Weber would lead the field to the green in WISSOTA Super Stock action,
and was looking to pick up the track championship. Weber got the jump on Dan
Carlson but Carlson capitalized to take the lead when Weber got a little bit
too high going in to turn one. The caution waved on lap two when Brock Haines
spun in turn two. Carlson led followed by Ron Host, Weber, Dale Gangl, and Joe
Nelson. Gangl moved up to third when racing resumed, and pressured Host for
second. Greg Nippoldt and Joe Nelson battled for fifth, and Nelson was up to
the challenge. Nelson advanced to third on lap seven, and was looking strong.
A scary moment for race leader Carlson on lap 13 when Brent Kobs had some
trouble in turn three. Carlson slid to a stop against Kobs, trying to avoid
him. luckily, no damage was suffered for Carlson and he would resume leading
the race once under way again. Nelson got by Host for second on lap 14, but
Host would return the favor and hold on to finish second. Carlson picked up
his second feature win of the year at CLS, followed by Host, Nelson, Steve
Thomas, and Greg Nippoldt.
Next up were the WISSOTA Modifieds. Todd Blaeser and Ron Mahder paced the
field, but the action was slowed right away with a rare spin by Ron Schreiner.
Schreiner was tagged with the caution and restart from the tail. Blaeser held
the top spot, but Mahder was right there, along with Dave Cain. A great three
car battle for first developed, but the caution waved again when Scott
Splittstoesser spun his machine in turn two. On the restart, it was Blaeser,
Mahder, Cain, Craig Thatcher, and Troy Girolamo making up the top five. Mahder
stole the lead on lap four, while Thatcher and Cain battled for third. Joey
Jensen qualified through the B-Feature and started 20th on the grid. Jensen
was having an amazing run, cracking the top ten by lap nine. Thatcher worked
his way to second on lap 10, and then to the lead on lap 11. Jensen was still
on the move, passing cars at will. Cain surprised Thatcher by driving around
on the outside to take the lead on lap 17. The caution waved on lap 17 when
Paul Knauff suffered a breakdown. On the restart, it was Cain, Thatcher,
Mahder, Blaeser, and Jensen rounding out the top five. Jensen got by Blaeser
to take fourth, and soon after Blaeser brought out the caution with a spin,
ending a very solid run. Thatcher made the move on Cain to take back the lead,
and would pick up the win. Cain, Jensen, Mahder, and Kerry Hanson rounded out
the top five.
The final event of the evening was the WISSOTA Late Model main event. Mark
Chamernick and Rick Egersdorf shared row one, and Chamernick would take the
initial lead. Rob Caho brought out the yellow on lap three with a spin in turn
three. Kaanta got by Egersdorf for second on the restart, and Brady Smith was
running fourth. Smith challenged Egersdorf for third, while Eric Pember moved
up to fifth. Kaanta was still working on Chamernick for the lead, with Kaanta
running the bottom, and Chamernick the top. On lap 15, Kaanta took over the
lead and Egersdorf then challenged Chamernick for second. Smith was still
working on Egersdorf, but couldn't complete the pass. Egersdorf took second
from Chamernick on lap 17. The caution waved again on lap 17 when Chuckie
DeSmith broke in turn four. On the restart, it was still Kaanta out front
followed by Egersdorf, Chamernick, Smith, and Pember. Smith took over third on
lap 20, while a great three car battle for sixth developed with Pat Doar, Joel
Cryderman, and Eric Breeschotten. Pember got by Chamernick for fourth on lap
26. Doar and Cryderman went at it for fifth in the closing laps, with
Cryderman taking the spot. Kaanta continued his hot streak, being tough to
beat anywhere he goes picking up his third win of the week. Egersdorf, Smith,
Pember and Cryderman rounded out the top five.
