Doar wins at Cedar Lake Speedway During NASCAR DUEL featuring Matt Kenseth & Dave Blaney!
by Bob Peine
August 13, 2003
New Richmond, WI.- It was warm and sunny on Wednesday night at Cedar Lake
Speedway, much unlike the originally scheduled date for the NASCAR Duel. Rain
forced postponement of the original date. NASCAR Winston Cup point leader,
Matt Kenseth, along with former World of Outlaws Champion, Dave Blaney were on
hand Wednesday night to entertain all in attendance. The two drivers competed
in a three-segment match race, with Blaney winning two out of three. Not many
would guess that Kenseth had never raced on dirt before, as he quickly
adjusted to the unfamiliar WISSOTA Super Stock that he piloted. Kenseth bested
Blaney in one of the segments, running around the high side of the high-banked
3/8 mile oval. Both drivers put on a great show, and looked to have a lot of
fun in doing so. Dave Blaney would also compete against some of the best
WISSOTA has to offer, racing a Super Stock and a WISSOTA Modified.
The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Street Stock main
event. Making an infrequent visit to the Cedar Lake Speedway, Butch Madsen led
the field to the green. Chris Peterson tucked in to second, while the battle
for third heated up right away, with Keith Tourville, Dan Gullikson, and Cory
Rosen.
The first caution came on lap five when Rosen got turned sideways on the front
stretch, and Dave Lamont with nowhere to go, made some hard contact with
Rosen. Lamont would be finished for the night, but Rosen was able to rejoin
the field in the third position. Madsen continued to lead with Tourville up to
second. Tourville applied some pressure on Madsen, but the pace was slowed
again when Dan Gullikson made contact with the front stretch wall. Gullikson
would lose his right rear wheel and be forced to retire for the evening. When
racing resumed, Chris Gullikson, Ron Hanestad, and Cory Rosen had a great
three car battle for third going. Hanestad took the spot with Gullikson taking
over fourth. Tourville again tried to get by Madsen for first, but Hanestad
made it look easy, going to the bottom and taking the top spot. The next
caution came when Tourville slowed with a breakdown, ending a strong run.
Hanestad hung on for the victory, with Madsen, Chris Gullikson, Jason
Vandekamp, and Mark Thomas rounding out the top five.
Next up were the WISSOTA Super Stocks, with Dave Blaney racing in the first of
two feature events he qualified for. Kenny Davis grabbed the early lead form
the pole, but would also bring out the first caution with a spin in turn two.
When racing got back underway, Justin Dodge led while Brent Mueller and Cory
Mahder raced side by side for fourth. Mike Weber was up to fifth early on, and
out front, Dodge had his hands full with Steve Thomas challenging for the
lead. Weber started to work on Mueller for fourth, while Dave Shackleton
worked his way in to second. Shackleton made it three wide for the lead, along
with Dodge and Thomas. But after some contact with the wall, Shackleton fell
back to fourth, and less than a lap later, would again get in the wall in turn
two. This would put an end to Shackleton's night, and it was Thomas taking the
lead away from Dodge. Brandon Jensen worked his way in to the top five in the
closing laps, and the battle for second heated up between Weber and Dodge.
Weber briefly took the second position, but Dodge took it back quickly.
Steve Thomas crossed the line first, followed by Dodge, Weber, Jensen, and
Mueller.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were up next, and Dave Blaney was looking for better
results than he had in the Super Stock, after going off on the hook with front
end damage. Blaney would start inside row two, behind pole sitter, and
National Point leader, Paul Harelstad. All kinds of problems kept this race
from going green for any amount of laps. Kevin Viebrock made hard contact with
the wall on the opening lap, ending his night. Dave Blaney also brought out an
early caution, spinning in turn two, and being sent to the rear. Cain had the
lead, followed by Harlelstad and Shawn Kelley. Joey Jensen managed to gain a
few spots with the brief green flag runs, and Harelstad was still looking to
get by Cain. Blaney would go off on the wrecker in this event also, after
getting in the wall and tangling with Jason Thoennes and Ron Mahder. Harelstad
took over the lead on lap four, and Jensen got as high as second on lap six.
The race was cut short due to the time factor, but it was Harelstad scoring
his 27th feature win of the season. Jensen, Cain, Bob Timm, and Ron Schreiner
rounded out the top five.
The final event of the evening was the WISSOTA Late Model main event. Rick
Egersdorf grabbed the lead early followed by Tom Nesbitt and Terry Casey. But
the car to watch was that of Pat Doar as he charged through the field and
wasted no time in going to the front. Doar took third from Casey, and on lap
two, moved past Nesbitt in to second. Keith Foss and Brady Smith were side by
side for fifth, with Smith winning the battle for position. Doar then set his
sights on Egersdorf, and on lap four took over the lead. Doar looked
untouchable out front and would look that way throughout the race. Egersdorf
continued to run second, and Smith was up to fourth on lap nine. Smith
pressured Nesbitt for third, and took the spot on lap 13. Casey also got by
Nesbitt, taking over fourth on lap 14. Smith challenged Egersdorf for the
second position, while Doar continued to pull away. Bob Timm was having a very
strong run, cracking the top five at the halfway point, and moving up to
fourth on lap 16. But Nesbitt battled back, and returned the favor, passing
Timm back for fourth. It was then a three car battle for position, with Casey,
Timm, and Nesbitt. The yellow waved on lap 20, when John Chrest slowed with
mechanical trouble. Timm made the move on Nesbitt when racing resumed and took
over fourth again on lap 21. Timm started to pressure Smith for third, but
Smith was able to fend him off. The final caution came on lap 23, when Lance
Matthees looped it in turns three and four. Duane Mahder made a late race
charge, cracking the top five on lap 24. Smith was pressuring Egersdorf for
second, and came close a few times but could not complete the pass. Doar
picked up the win followed by Egersdorf, Smith, Timm, and Mahder.
