Joey Jensen Finds Victory Lane At Cedar Lake Speedway!

by Bob Peine

New Richmond, WI.- Once again, the threat of rain held off at Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday night. A few sprinkles fell during the race program, but ended quickly. 163 cars were on hand, with good car counts in all four divisions. The Northern Vintage Stock Cars were also in attendance.

The first feature event of the evening was the first of two Northern Vintage Stock Car features. Jerry Gamer took the checkers first after a great race-long battle with Eric Busse. In the second Northern Vintage Stock Car feature, there was a great four car battle throughout most of the race, involving George Shields, Dan Larson, Gary Whipple, and Ken Saby. Mark Peine crossed the line fifth.

The WISSOTA Street Stock main event was next, with Jim Gullikson and Mike Loomis sharing row one. Jim Gullikson was looking to pick up his fourth feature win of the season at Cedar Lake Speedway and would take the lead on lap one. Loomis gave chase and would give up the second position to Chris Gullikson on lap two. Ron Hanestad was up to fifth on lap five after starting back in the field. The caution waved on lap five though, when Shawn Kammerud and Keith Tourville became locked together in turn two. Tourville suffered a flat right front but would return to racing action after making the change.

On the restart, it was Jim Gullikson leading Chris Gullikson, Loomis, Dan Gullikson and Hanestad. Dan Gullikson moved up to third when racing resumed, and would take second on lap seven. Chris and Dan Gullikson raced side by side for second as Hanestad battled with Loomis for fourth. Hanestad would take the spot and got by Chris Gullikson for third on lap 13.  Jim Gullikson crossed the stripe first followed by Dan Gullikson, Hanestad, Chris Gullikson, and Mike Loomis. But during post-race tech inspection, Jim Gullikson's car was found to be illegal, which would negate the win, making Dan Gullikson the winner.

Next up were the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Kevin Ayotte would start from the pole and lead lap one followed by Matt Sinna and Joe Nelson. Nelson would take second on lap two, and Cory Mahder was up to third on lap two. Mahder looked strong from the start and took over second from Nelson one lap later.

Mike Weber was the man on the mission though after starting 11th on the grid. Weber cracked the top five just five laps in, as Mahder took over the lead from Ayotte. Weber was flat out flying around the high side though and was up to second on lap seven. Brandon Jensen and Kevin Ayotte had a good race going for the fourth spot and it would be Jensen taking the position. On lap 11, Jensen was up to third. Ayotte brought out the caution with a breakdown in turn four, bringing an unfortunate end to a very strong run. On the restart, it was Mahder, Weber, Nelson, Jensen, and Dan Carlson rounding out the top five. Mahder would have his hands full with Weber when racing resumed, and was able to hold off a couple challenges, but in the end, Weber drove by to take the lead. Weber would not look back and scored yet another feature win at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Mahder crossed the line second, but in post-race tech inspection, was disqualified, taking away the second place finish. Joe Nelson was credited with second,
followed by Dave Shackleton, Brandon Jensen, and Greg Nippoldt.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were up next with Ron Mahder taking the early lead after starting from the pole. Pat Hardy tucked in to second followed by Darrel Nelson. Joey Jensen took third on lap two, and Hardy stole the lead from Mahder on lap two also. Jensen looked strong on the bottom and moved in to second on lap three. One lap later, Jensen was out front and looking good. Eric Pember and Dave Cain contested the fourth position, but the caution waved when Ross Prochnow went around on the backstretch. When racing resumed, Craig Thatcher and Shawn Kelley were side by side for sixth, with Thatcher taking the spot.

But out front, it was Jensen leading and holding off the challenges from Hardy. Jensen held on for the win followed by Hardy, Nelson, Cain, and Thatcher.

The final event of the evening was the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Tom Nesbitt got the jump on Chad Cummings to take the early lead. Steve Laursen ran third but would soon have company as Pat Doar shot by to take the position. Mark Chamernick and Steve Laursen raced for fourth, and Doar pressured Cummings for second. Rick Egersdorf cracked the top five in the early going and was looking strong. Doar took the lead on lap nine, and Egersdorf continued to move forward, challenging Chamernick for fourth. On lap 10, Egersdorf took the position while Doar tried to check out on the field. Brady Smith had worked his way through some traffic and was up to fifth. Smith started to close in on Egersdorf who was all over Nesbitt for third. Smith got by Nesbitt to take fourth on lap 18. John Kaanta, who has been extremely fast and tough to beat everywhere he goes lately, was up to fifth on lap 20.  The caution flew on lap 20 when Justin Fegers was spun in to the infield in turn two. Brent Larson was charged with the caution and sent to the tail. On the restart, it was Doar, Cummings, Egersdorf, Smith, and Kaanta making up the top five. Kaanta used the caution to his advantage and picked off two spots on the restart, moving him up to third. Doar was flawless out front though and held on for the win. Egersdorf, Kaanta, Cummings, and Smith rounded out the top five.

Once again, a great night of racing in all divisions. The next race is no doubt one of the best races of the year at the Cedar Lake Speedway, the 16th Annual USA Nationals. Activities begin on Thursday, August 7th with a practice session and party to follow. August 8th and 9th will feature Xtreme Dirt Car Series Late Models, along with WISSOTA Late Models.
