Nutzmann Victorious at Cedar Lake Speedway!

by Bob Peine

New Richmond, WI.- It was another perfect evening for racing at the Cedar Lake Speedway, with clear skies and sunshine. It was also Kid's Night with free admission for those 13 and under. Cedar Lake Speedway would like to thank all who attended.

The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event. Jim Gullikson would grab the lead from his front row starting position, followed by Joe Rhead and Dan Gullikson. A great battle for third started to develop between Jason Vandekamp, Cory Rosen and Dan Gullikson. Jim Gullikson started to open up a gap between himself and second. Rosen and Dan Gullikson swapped the third position back and forth, and on lap nine, Rosen took second from Rhead. Chris Gullikson, Mike Loomis, Jason Vandekamp, and Ron Hanestad were all in a pack battling for fifth. Dan Gullikson also got by Rhead and once again went at it with Rosen, this time for second. Jim Gullikson looked good out front and picked up his third win at the Cedar Lake Speedway this year. Rosen held off Dan Gullikson to finish second, with Dan Gullikson, Rhead, and Loomis rounding out the top five.

Next up were the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Tim Borgeson and Chuckie DeSmith shared row one and it was Borgeson jumping out to take the lead. DeSmith and Steve Hallquist gave chase. Gary Nippoldt settled in to fourth but would soon be overtaken by Mike Weber. Weber looked strong and took over third from Hallquist as Borgeson tried to run away from the field. On lap 11, the caution waved when Hallquist slowed with mechanical troubles, ending a strong run. On the restart, it was Borgeson, DeSmith, Mike Weber, Ted Marrs, and Greg Alling rounding out the top five. The "big one" happened on lap 12, a huge pile-up involving nearly half the field on the backstretch. Rich Bishop started to go around while battling for fifth, and this caused the field to bunch up behind him, with cars spinning in all directions causing a log jam on the backstretch. Those involved were Bruce Tourville, Brandon Jensen, Steve Thomas, Eric Youngman, Ron Host, Charlie Weber, Kenny Davis, and Danny Olinger. A lot of cars sustained heavy damage and the wreck left only 10 cars running to take the green on the restart. Tim Borgeson had the field covered tonight and held on for the win. DeSmith, Mike Weber, Jeremy Kerzman, and Alling rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Modifieds took to the track next with Bob Houston taking the early lead. Dave Lear and Jamie Lemke fell in to second and third, but Lemke dove to the inside to make an impressive pass to take the lead on lap two. Joey Jensen moved up to second on lap three. Dann Olson was up to third in the opening laps, as Lemke looked to stretch his lead over Jensen. Eric Pember fought his way in to fourth and challenged Olson for third. This would last for most of the race between Pember and Olson, putting on a great show. Jensen tried to reel in Lemke and challenge for the lead, but to no avail. Lemke picked up the win followed by Jensen, Olson, Pember, and Houston rounding out the top five.

The fourth and final feature of the night was the WISSOTA Late Model 30 lap main event. Joel Cryderman and Mike Nutzmann shared row one and it was Cryderman getting the jump. Pat Doar wasted no time in going from his third row starting position up to second, passing Nutzmann on lap three. Brady Smith and Eric Pember battled for fourth while Doar tried to chase down Cryderman. The first and second place cars of Cryderman and Doar started to pull away from third place. As Cryderman and Doar entered lap traffic, bad luck fell on Doar while trying to pass Mike Hesselink. The two cars made contact resulting in Doar's car suffering left front damage, dropping him from competition. On the restart, it was Cryderman leading Nutzmann, Smith, Pember and Chad Cummings. As the green flag waved though, Cryderman clipped the cone and would be penalized five positions on the next restart. This would hand the lead to Nutzmann with Smith running second. Jerry Redetzke and Chad Cummings were contesting the fifth position when the caution waved again on lap 14. Mark Chamernick came to a stop against the backstretch wall after battling with Ron Berna, putting an end to Chamernick's night. Nutzmann led Smith and Pember to the cone after Cryderman was assessed the five position penalty. Smith soon faced some heavy pressure from Pember and Cummings for the second spot. Redetzke was pressuring Cummings for fourth, and John Kaanta entered the picture in the closing laps also. On lap 25, the caution waved again, this time for Cryderman rolling to a halt in turn four with a breakdown. Nutzmann was able to hold off all challengers in the last five laps picking up his second win at Cedar Lake Speedway this season. Smith held on to second, followed by Kaanta, Pember, and Redetzke.
