Steve Kinser Claims World of Outlaws Win at CLS!!
by Bob Peine
July 7, 2003
New Richmond, WI.- The O'Reilly's World of Outlaws Sprint Cars were on hand
Monday at Cedar Lake Speedway. It was Bernard's Northtown Dodge of New
Richmond, WI., and Grand Casino Hinckley Night with packed grandstands and
another great car count.
Danny Lasoski shattered the track record with a blistering lap of 11.085
seconds around the high-banked 3/8 mile oval, with a few other drivers also
getting under the previous track record set by John Sernett earlier this year.
After three qualifying heat races and two dashes with the sprint cars, and
five heat races and two B-Features in the WISSOTA Super Stock class, the
starting grids were set. The WISSOTA Super Stock main event was first,
with Tim Borgeson and Mike Weber sharing row one. Things never really got
going with the Super Stocks, as numerous cautions plagued the entire race.
Weber got the jump on Borgeson and took the lead, looking very strong out
front. Borgeson nor any of the other drivers ever got a chance to get in
to a rhythm, with the yellow flag coming out frequently. Bruce Tourville
turned in a strong performance to come home third. Danny Olinger and Jeff
Martire had quite a battle going for fifth, when green flag racing permitted.
Ryan
Wiome also had a great run, running in the top five throughout the race.
The scheduled 20 lap main event was shortened to 15 laps, due to the numerous
cautions and time factor. Borgeson made some great efforts on the
restarts to try and dive under Weber, but could not make the move stick. Weber
looked to be back in his early season form, having the dominant car once
again. Borgeson finished a strong second, followed by Tourville, Wiome, and
Olinger.
The final event of the evening was the O'Reilly's World of Outlaws 30 lap
feature. Former WISSOTA National Champion Donny Schatz and Brian Paulus would
lead the field to the green flag. Kraig Kinser charged from his third starting
position to take the early lead. Paulus and Schatz fell in line behind Kinser
in second and third respectively. Schatz challenged Paulus
for the second spot and would have it. The yellow flag flew on lap four when
Joey Saldana spun in turn two. Schatz would be on Kraig Kinser's rear
bumper for the restart and applied pressure right away for the lead, but
Kinser was able to fend him off for the moment. Steve Kinser got by Paulus for
third and set his sights on Schatz and his son Kraig. Schatz took over the
lead on lap eight in a hard fought battle with Kraig Kinser. Paul McMahan was
up to fourth, while Steve Kinser went at it for second in a great father-son
duel. Steve made the pass for second but Kraig did not give up easily, taking
back the second position one lap later. The King of the Outlaws would prevail
in the fight for second though, passing Kraig in traffic to secure the
spot. The yellow flag waved again on lap 19 when Jeremy Campbell spun in
turn two. On the restart, it was still Schatz out front, followed by Steve
Kinser, Kraig Kinser, Sammy Swindell, and Paul McMahan. Sammy Swindell wasted
no time in getting by Kraig Kinser for third, while Steve Kinser began to reel
in Schatz who had pulled out to a almost a straightaway advantage. Once Steve
Kinser cleared the lapped cars, he closed the gap quickly. On lap 27, Steve
Kinser took the lead form Schatz,
blasting by on the high side. The caution came out one last time on lap
33, when Brian Carlson looped it in turn two. This would set up a
green-white-checkered finish, but neither Schatz nor Swindell were able to
mount any kind of challenge. Steve Kinser added another victory to the win
column, and the statistics will show why he is truly the King of the Outlaws.
Donny Schatz crossed the line second, followed by Sammy Swindell, Paul
McMahan, and Danny Lasoski rounding out the top five.
All in all, another great night of racing at the Cedar Lake Speedway
with more to come on Saturday, July 12th when regular racing resumes. A big
thanks goes out to all who attended the night's races and to Bernard's
Northtown and to Grand Casino for the nice door prizes. If you have questions
