Egersdorf and Pember Take CLS Mains!!

by Bob Peine

New Richmond, WI.- It was Tony Stewart "Doin' it On Dirt" Night at Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday night. WISSOTA Late Models and Modifieds were on hand and Stewart competed in both. The reigning NASCAR Winston Cup Champion had the luck of the draw go in his favor and started in the front row in both heat races. Stewart won both his Late Model and Modified heat races and looked very impressive.

The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Modified 25 lap main event. Tony Stewart started on the pole, with Dave Cain to his outside.  Stewart grabbed the early lead, followed by Eric Pember and Dave Cain.  Pember immediately started to pressure Stewart for the lead, and would soon have it. Stewart jumped the cushion in turn three, and Pember was there to capitalize. Craig Thatcher was up to third, but would pull to the infield shortly after with a flat tire. On lap 14, Tony Stewart also would suffer a flat right rear tire, bringing out the caution. Stewart would be forced to restart from the tail with 11 laps remaining.  On the restart, it was Pember, Cain, Rick Jacobson, Joey Jensen, and Mark Trautner rounding out the top five. Joey Jensen dove to the inside of Jacobson to take over third when racing resumed. The yellow flag waved again soon after when Thatcher, Scott Schulte, and Paul Bruggeman got together in turn four. On the next restart, Cain looked to the inside of Pember, but could not make the pass. Bob Timm stormed in to the top five in the latter stages, and would get up to third with a couple laps to go. Ron Schreiner qualified through the B-Feature and had a very strong run going, making it all the way through the field, and up to fifth. Bob Timm had an unfortunate ending to a very solid run, spinning to the inside of the track exiting turn two on the white flag lap. Pember had the field covered tonight and took the checkers first, followed by Cain, Jensen, Jacobson, and Schreiner.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature was the final event of the evening and it was Rick Egersdorf and Tony Stewart sharing row one. Egersdorf got the jump on Stewart, but caution waved early for Tom Nesbitt coming to a stop in turn two. Tony Stewart spun in turn four after the caution came out, and would have bad luck strike early, as he exited the speedway, with a broken left rear shock. The repair was made, and Stewart would rejoin the field in the 24th position.  On the restart, it was Egersdorf, Redetzke, and Jeff Patchen leading the field to the cone. The caution came out again shortly after when Andy Simonson, Tom Nesbitt, and Rick Hanestad got together in turn two. When racing resumed, Steve Laursen made a strong move to take over third, while Pat Doar jumped up to fourth. But all eyes seemed to be on Tony Stewart who was on an absolute tear. On lap 10, Stewart was up to 13th, and was by far the fastest car on the speedway. Redetzke was trying to reel in Egersdorf, and Doar was up to third. Stewart was driving the wheels off of the Larry Stockwell owned Mastersbilt by Mars, and was up to fifth on lap 17, after restarting in 24th. Egersdorf continued to lead, followed by Redetzke and Doar. Ryan Aho was on the move, and was very fast around the bottom and was reeling in the leaders. Doar challenged Redetzke for second and would take over the position on lap 23.  The race got more interesting with each lap, as Doar closed in on Egersdorf, and Aho had caught Redetzke, and Stewart was closing in on everyone. On lap 25, Egersdorf went a little high in three and four, and Doar was there to pounce on the lead. Ryan Aho took over third on lap 26, and Stewart was rapidly closing on the leaders.  As the white flag waved, Stewart looked to the inside of Aho for third, with a lapped car to the outside of Aho and Stewart. The three cars were in a tight pack coming off of two and made some side by side contact which resulted in Tony Stewart spinning to the inside of the track. Stewart would be done for the night, after putting on an awesome display on the track, coming from 24th to battle in the top three on the last lap.

When racing resumed, Doar led Egersdorf and Aho to the cone and it was Doar leading going in to three, with Egersdorf going high, blasting off the cushion while Aho got under Doar coming off of turn four. It was a three-car drag race to the line, and Egersdorf had the momentum on the top side, beating Doar and Aho by inches at the line. Aho came home second, Doar third, with Trent Follmer and Jerry Redetzke rounding out the top five.  Trent Follmer started 18th on the grid and was very impressive again, scoring a top five.

A very exciting and eventful night once again at the Cedar Lake Speedway.  Racing resumes on Saturday, June 28th with the first of two Firecracker specials with racing in all four divisions. If you need more information, please call 1-866-4CLSFUN or visit our website at www.cedarlakespeedway.com
