Jim Gullikson and Mark Teske Top WISSOTA Mains at CLS!!

by Bob Peine and Roby Helm
June 20, 2003

New Richmond, WI.-It was a perfect night for racing on Friday, and a lot of great racing was seen in all three classes.  On hand were WISSOTA Street Stocks, WISSOTA Late Models, and the Xtreme Dirt Car Series Late Models.  A number of WISSOTA Late Models competed in Xtreme competition also.

After six qualifying heat races for the WISSOTA Late Models, ten heat races were ran for the Xtreme Late Models.  A handful of WISSOTA drivers raced their way in to the Masters feature for Saturday night, including Pat Doar who held off Scott Bloomquist and Jimmy Mars to pick up an impressive heat race win.  Doar was competing in a WISSOTA legal car, which made this even more impressive.  Justin Fegers, Lance Matthees, and Jeff Wildung also earned starting positions in the Masters through their heat races.

The first feature event of the evening was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event.  This would turn out to be one of the best races of the night, with the Gullikson brothers putting on a great show.  Chris Gullikson took the early lead followed by Chris Peterson and Dan Gullikson.  Jim Gullikson went to the high side to challenge brother Dan for third, while Dan battled with
Peterson for second.  Jim Gullikson made the top work and got by both Dan Gullikson and Peterson to take over second. Dan Gullikson continued to race for third with Peterson, while Jim Gullikson started to pressure Chris Gullikson for the lead.  Dan Gullikson secured third and then challenged Jim Gullikson for second.  Jim Gullikson picked up the pace trying to hold off brother Dan, and passed Chris Gullikson for the lead in the process.  Ron Hanestad had caught the Gulliksons and looked like he could be a factor in deciding the outcome of the race.  But on lap 13, Hanestad brought out the caution when he lost a wheel in turn four, while running fourth.  On the restart, it was Jim Gullikson leading Chris and Dan Gullikson, Peterson, and David Engstrand rounding out the top five. Dan Gullikson continued to pressure Chris Gullikson for second, and as the laps counted down, it turned in to a three-car dogfight for the lead.  At times, the three brothers were three wide for the lead, putting on what would probably have to be the best Street Stock race of the year at CLS.  At the stripe, it was Jim Gullikson picking up his second feature win of the year at Cedar Lake Speedway, followed by Dan and Chris Gullikson, Chris Peterson, and David Engstrand rounding out the top five.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature was up next, and it would be Troy Kuyoth and Eric Pember sharing row one.  This also would turn out to be a race that would keep the fans on their feet throughout the entire race.  Pember took the early lead, followed by Kuyoth and Mark Teske.  Teske took over second on lap three, and Pat Doar moved up to third.  The first caution came on lap four when Steve Isenberg spun in turn two.  On the restart, it was Pember, Teske, Kuyoth, Keith Foss, and Pat Doar, who was pushed back to fifth due to the caution coming out.  Doar immediately re-passed a couple cars to move to
back to third when racing resumed. Kuyoth took over second, and looked very strong.  Rick Egersdorf was on the move and up to sixth.  Doar and Foss battled for fourth, while Teske started to pressure Pember for first. On lap 13, Teske took the lead for the first time.  The caution waved again, this time for Mitch Johnson and Brady Smith.  Johnson made contact with the
frontstretch wall, and Smith suffered heavy damage off of turn two when Lance Matthees and Tony Bahr both ran in to him, having nowhere to go, as he sat sideways on the speedway.  All cars involved would be out of action for the night.  On the restart, it was Teske, Pember, Foss, Kuyoth, and Doar making up the top five.  Pember took over the lead again on lap 16, while Egersdorf and Doar swapped the fifth spot back and forth.  During the second half of the 30 lap feature, Pember and Teske would be side by side most of the time, while directly behind them, Foss and Kuyoth raced side by side for third.  Doar followed closely behind them, looking for a way through.  Mark Teske would end up hanging on to pick up his first Late Model win at Cedar Lake Speedway, followed by Pember, Kuyoth, Foss, and Doar.

Two former Xtreme DirtCar Series champions used two different routes on Friday night to earn front row starting spots for the 5th Annual Masters 100 at Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday night.  The 1997 XDCS Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR, and defending and two-time champion Rick Eckert of York, PA start on the front row.  Moyer drew the pole position for the ninth of ten eight-lap heat races, and drove his J&J Steel Mastersbilt/Dickens Monte Carlo to victory. The win gave Moyer the
outside front row starting spot for the 12-lap Heat Race Winner's Dash. Moyer then won the dash to earn the pole position for the 40-lap first of three segments for the XDCS All-Star race.

Eckert had a little longer row to hoe to get to his front row starting spot. Eckert drew the highest number in the hat, which put him on the tail of the six-car eight-lap tenth heat.  With some spectacular moves, Eckert raced his way to the front and won the tenth heat in the Raye Vest/Petroff Towing Rocket/Cornett Taurus to earn the pole for the Heat Winner's Dash. The defending Masters champion finished second to Moyer to claim the outside front row starting spot. The top two finishers in the ten heat races automatically transferred to the Masters main event. The heat race winners lined up inverted in a 12-lap
dash to determine the top ten starting positions, and the second place finishers in the ten heats lined up in a 12-lap dash to determine starting positions 11 through 20.

There were no time trials, and the 64 drivers drew for their starting positions in the heat races.  The first heat started seven cars, and Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH and Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA started sixth and seventh respectively. When the checkered flag fell after eight laps, Moran drove his QPI Tools Dirt Ripper Mastersbilt/Malcuit Monte Carlo to victory with Birkhofer second in the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo.  Local favorite Pat Doar of New Richmond, WI started on the pole and went wire-to-wire to win the second heat in the Tri-Star Engine Supply Mastersbilt/Tri-Star Grand Prix. Four-time series champion, current XDCS point leader, and former Masters Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN finished second in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom Taurus.

The 1999 series champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA drove the Larry Shaw Race Cars/J&J Steel Rocket By Shaw/Kuntz Taurus to victory in the third heat, with Ace Ihm of Hazel Green, WI finishing second in the Fishbowl Bar Rocket/Custom Grand Prix.  John Anderson of Omaha, NE started on the pole in the Tender Heart Treasures GRT/Hatfield Grand Prix to win the fourth heat. Another driver coming from the tail of a heat to transfer to the Masters was Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL, who finished second in the First City Mortgage Rayburn/Hedrick Monte Carlo.

Former Masters champion Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR won the fifth heat in the J&J Steel GRT/Craft Taurus, with second going to the 1996 series champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN in the White Oaks Motorsports Warrior/Gaerte Intrepid.  Steve Francis of Ashland, KY started fourth and won the sixth heat in the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid, with lance Mathees of Winona, MN finishing second in the Lou Fegers Racing Equipment Fegers/Custom Monte Carlo.

Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL got a gift on the last lap of the seventh heat race, when race leader Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV cut down a tire under his Bill Bland Towing Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo on the last lap of the race. Babb took the win in the Car City Company Rayburn/Dickens Monte Carlo, followed by Kerry Hansen of Spencer, WI in the Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket/Pro Power Grand Prix.

Justin Fegers of Mound, MN came from the tail of the eighth heat to take the win driving the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Darren Miller of Chadwick, IL finished second in the Seubert Calf Ranches
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Taurus.  Finishing behind Moyer in the ninth heat was Jeff Smith of Dallas, NC in the Die Cast Digest Magazine/Starrette Trucking GRT/Gaerte Monte Carlo. Jeff Wildung of Nassau, MN in the Veit Corn Power Auto Rocket/Sturd Grand Prix finished second to Eckert in the tenth heat.

Finishing behind Moyer and Eckert in the Heat Race Winner's Dash to claim the third through tenth Masters starting spots respectively were Wallace, Babb, McDowell, Francis, Fegers, Moran, Doar, and Anderson.  Bloomquist bolted from the ninth starting spot to win the heat races Second-Place Dash to earn the 11th Masters starting spot. Finishing behind Bloomquist to earn the 12th through 20th Masters starting spots respectively were Jeff Smith, Erb, Darren Miller, Birkhofer, Wildung, Freddy Smith, Hansen, Ihm, and Mathees.
