Coons Snags Second 'Prairie Victory
By Bryan Gapinski
Sun Prairie, Wis., Aug. 13 - Jerry Coons Jr. took advantage of a late-race
caution flag to pass series points leader Brad Kuhn, to win the 25-lap Badger
Midget Series feature Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway.
Kuhn jumped into the lead at the start of the event and opened a large
advantage over Mike Hess and Scott Hatton. Kuhn held a 3.8 second lead on the
ninth lap when he began lapping the tail of the field, while Coons had moved
into fifth place. Kuhn maintained his lead in heavy lapped traffic until lap
12 when third-place Hatton stopped with wheel problems bringing the caution.
Coons moved into third on the restart, three laps later the event was slowed
again for a three car accident which sidelined Hatton's run. One lap after the
restart Coons passed Hess for second place. Kuhn held a two second lead over
Coons when the caution was displayed on lap 19 for a stalled car.
Kuhn led Coons to the restart cone, with Coons executing a drive under Kuhn
heading into turn one taking the lead. Kuhn made a few attempts to
repass Coons running on his rear bumper. The events fourth caution bunched up
the pair for a four- lap shootout. On the restart Coons driving the WIlke-PAK
Motorsports/Spike-Mopar ran flawless and finished three-car lengths ahead of
Kuhn. Hess, Brandon Waelti and New Zealand's Michael Pickens completed the top
five.
With three events remaining Kuhn increased his points lead to 123 over Hatton
heading into the Aug. 20, 50-lap event at Angell Park Speedway.
