Badger Kart Club Points Opener

The Badger Kart Club opened up the BKC Bridgestone tire Championship Points series this weekend at Badger Raceway. With clear skies and temps in the 70’s, quite a large crowd of racers came out to take part.

Apparently, not all the racers took part in the practice sessions the week before as the rust was quite evident. Several bad crashes and plenty of smaller ones really dragged out the day and officials had to cut the features short for many of the later classes in the day.

One of the best races all day was the Yamaha Lite Heat Race 2.  Cagey veteran Mark Jung took the point right from the drop of the green flag. However, he was challenged constantly by last season’s class champion Nic Johnsrud and Ryan Rutzinski.  The action was three wide repeatedly throughout the race although the racers kept it extremely clean and never once touched each other! At the end of the heat race, Jung prevailed, but he admittedly said it was a tough race.

Austin Schmitt seemed to have his way with the Animal Sr. Lite class. Schmitt won both heat races and took the feature by well over 20 kart lengths.  Scott Adler had very similar fortunes in Sr. Sportsman Heavy, winning a heat race and demolishing the field in the feature. His son Joey also came up roses, winning the SSX Jr. Can feature. However, Joey had tons of pressure from Pat Olsen, who raced him clean, but came up just a bit short at the end.

Travis Kosik won big taking a heat race and the HPV Jr. feature by over 20 kart lengths each time.  Aron Scalissi won Briggs Heavy by over 8 seconds and took a close 2nd in Briggs Animal Sr. Heavy. Kelsey Bauer would be the winner of that feature.

Shawn Campbell got off to the same start as in 2004 by winning the opening feature race of HPV Heavy.  Zack “The Iceman” Emmons made a tremendous third-to-first pass to capture first place and the HPV Lite feature. Tommy Anderson barely edged out Eric Sutcliffe for his first feature win in two years by winning HPV Jr. Sportsman. And Robby Mueller got past Kodiak Wirtz on the final lap of the Briggs Animal Jr. Sportsman feature to capture the checkers!
