Badger Track Records Fall Like Dominos
August 1, 2004
Story by Mike Weaver
It was only a week since the Midwest Sprint Series raced Badger Raceway with
their sticky tires, laying down sheets of tacky rubber in every corner. And
the Badger Kart Club regulars had a field day using it to their advantage this
weekend. As most of Badger's classes run hard "club" tires, the
additional traction severely jeopardized all the track records. And many
fell as a result!
Zack Emmons is one of Badger's only national racers. He raced the Midwest
Sprint Series race the week before and it truly showed as he just crushed the
HPV Jr. field during every heat. He also crushed the track record for that
class during the feature by laying down a 38.759.
Garret Wescott broke the record in Briggs Animal Junior while trying to run
down Collin Jackson. Jackson managed to break away from the pack early in the
feature while Wescott suffered from a lower starting position and had to deal
with traffic. Jackson managed to hold on for the win with Wescott taking
2nd and the record.
Brian Weber wasted no time in shaking down his brand new Merlin chassis. Weber
destroyed his primary chassis during a practice session at the Midwest Sprint
Series just the week before. With very little practice, he not only shook down
the new chassis, but managed to capture the track record in Sr. Sportsman Lite,
besting his points rival Nic Johnsrud in the process.
James Bennett also joined the Track Record club by besting the time in Briggs
Animal Jr. Sportsman. Bennett was racing hard with Robby Mueller when he drove
too hard in Turn 1 and looped it. He and Mueller were so far ahead of the rest
of the field at that point that Bennett managed to hold on to 2nd after
getting it back together. In the process of trying to catch back up to
Mueller, Bennett nicked the track record with a 44.686, a time that was .5
seconds faster than anyone else on the track during that race! Mueller
went on to win by over 3 seconds with Bennett taking 2nd.
There were also several Fast Times for 2004 set this weekend. Austin Schmitt
in Briggs Animal Sr., Scott Adler in Sr. Sportsman Heavy, Vince Heywood in
Briggs Jr. Sportsman, Heidi Olsen in Briggs Lite and Joe Schaffer in Briggs
Heavy, Bianca Schreiber in Jr. SSX Can, Eric Sutcliffe in 2-cycle Jr.
Sportsman and Jason Foley in Jr. Can.
