Raceway At Powercom Park Memorial Day Special
May 30, 2005
by Dennis Thompson
The Raceway at Powercom Park played host to a special Twi-Light show on
Memorial Day, Monday May 30 that featured the Shaver Builders and Home
Improvement Modifieds, the Johnsonville Sausage W.D.L.M.A. Late Models and the
Mini-Sprints.
Frank Firari of Lowell jumped into the lead at the start of the 30-lap
modified A-Main. Benji LaCrosse of Luxemburg moved up quickly to take over the
second position followed by Dennis Krause of Oconomowoc, Mike Conn of
Big Bend, and Sean Jerovetz of Little Suamico. The top groove appeared to be
the quickest and Firari ran right up against the cushion. LaCrosse worked on
Firari and made several attempts to take over the top spot with an inside
move. Firari held his ground and continued to run up front. The pace was
slowed by several cautions with the incident on lap twenty-two having a
significant impact as positions two through five would be involved. Mike
Sandholm of Oconomowoc was in the thick of the battle for second with LaCrosse
when contact was made. LaCrosse spun and Krause and Jerovetz also got wrapped
up in the accident. Sandholm was sent to the rear for the restart while
LaCrosse, Krause and Jerovetz retired to the pits. Once back under green,
Firari remained out in front and went onto claim the win. Mike Conn finished a
strong second ahead of Steve Mueller of Mukwonago, Tim Van Dehei of Green Bay,
and David Werbelow of
Shawano.
.
Terry Anvelink of Bonduel won the drag with Russ Scheffler of Waukesha down
into turn number one and took the early lead in the 30-lap W.D.L.M.A. Late
Model A-Main. Scheffler worked hard on Anvelink and was able to take over the
top spot on lap twelve. Nick Anvelink of Bonduel was on the move from his
fourth row starting position and was running in third. Scheffler and Terry
Anvelink continued their battle up front swapping the top spot a couple of
times. Nick Anvelink then showed his strength and powered his way into the
lead on lap eighteen. While Nick Anvelink ran out in front the battle for
second raged between Scheffler, Terry Anvelink and A.J. Diemel of Navarino. As
the checkered flag waved it was Nick Anvelink across the line for first. Russ
Scheffler claimed second with Terry Anvelink taking third. A.J. Deimel
followed in fourth with Gordie Seegert Jr. of Oostburg placing fifth.
Bob Reichert of Skokie, IL took over the lead on lap nine and drove to victory
in the 20-lap mini-sprint A-Main. Kirk Boers of Madison ran strong finishing
in second ahead of John Draper of Racine. Alex Pettas of Phoenix, AZ followed
in fourth. Randy Reed of Spring Grove, IL took fifth.
B-Main wins were registered by Joey Jaeger of Hubertis and John Stanton of
Reeseville in the modifieds and by Chris Carlson of Greenfield in the late
models.
Mike Conn, Jay Schraufnagel of Beaver Dam, Sean Jerovetz, Dennis Haldemann of
Randolph and Jim Zdroik of Big Bend were victorious in the modified heats.
Late models heat race wins were recorded by Jim Zdroik, Russ Scheffler and
Nick Anvelink. Ron Brannam of Barrington, IL and Bob Reichert won the
mini-sprint heats.
