Practice Revs Up Powercom Park
April 23, 2005
Dennis Thompson
The roar of engines filled the air Saturday afternoon at The Raceway at
Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, WI as cars took to the track for the first time
this season. The event was the first of two inspection/practice days scheduled
at the track. The second inspection/practice day will take place on Saturday
April 30. The inspection/practice days are very valuable to the drivers and
their teams as it allows them to have their cars go through the inspection
process prior to the first racing event of the season. It also provides a
great opportunity for them to get in some valuable track time in preparation
for the season ahead.
Despite windy and cold conditions, nearly seventy cars participated in the
event. A total of ten different racing divisions were represented with the
modifieds and dirt devils providing the biggest turnout. Other divisions
represented were grand nationals, stocks, legends, late models, midgets,
sprints, mini-sprints and USAC Silver Crown.
The first racing event of the season will take place on Saturday May 7 when
the USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car Series and the USAC National Midget Car
Series take to the fast 1/3 mile high-banked clay oval. This is the second
consecutive season that The Raceway at Powercom Park has hosted a USAC
National Sprint/Midget doubleheader. The program last season proved to be one
of the most exciting open wheel events of the season and the event this year
should once again be one of premier open wheel shows of the year. For the USAC
National Sprint Series, it is one of just two events for the series to be run
in the state this season and the only one on dirt. For the USAC National
Midget Series, it is one of only three appearances for the series in the state
this season.
The regular weekly divisions season opener is set for Saturday May 14.
Providing the action will be The Shaver Builders, LLC and Home Improvement
Center Modifieds, Dodge Central Credit Union Stocks, Gibbsville Cheese
Wisconsin Legends Dirt Racing Series, Northwoods Paper Converting Grand
Nationals and the Wally’s Auto Dirt Devils. R.E.E.L. Cleaning Solutions
sponsors the X-Treme Dirt Devils.
Johnsonville Sausage is the division sponsor for the Wisconsin Dirt Late
Models Association. The late models will run every other week of the regular
Saturday night division shows with their first appearance of the season slated
for May 21.
The World of Outlaws Sprints are back for two programs this season. Their
first event is scheduled for Wednesday July 6. The second program will take
place on Saturday September 24.
