Mullen Takes Powercom Park Modified Special
by Dennis Thompson
September 14, 2004
Scott Mullen of Seymour out battled Mike Wedelstadt of Fremont and Jay
Schraufnagel of Beaver Dam to win the Town and Country Construction of
Mayville Modified 30-lap A-Main at the Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam,
WI on Tuesday night.
Dennis Haldemann of Randolph raced into the lead at the start of the event
from his outside row one starting position. Steve Mueller of Mukwonago
followed closely behind. The first caution of the event came out quickly for
an incident involving Joe McGrath of Neosho, Mike Sandholm of Oconomowoc, Bob
Mann of Juneau and Benji LaCrosse of Luxemberg with only one lap
complete.
Haldemann remained out in front after the restart as the rest of the field
shuffled for position. Scott Mullen closed in on Haldemann and began to
challenge for the lead. Mullen slipped by Haldemann on lap six to take over
the top spot. The caution flag waved once again on lap eight when Brian Mullen
of Seymour had problems and came to a halt in turn four.
Scott Mullen led on the restart but was quickly joined by Jay Schraufnagel,
who had moved up from the fifth row. Mullen and Schraufnagel began to engage
in a fierce battle for the top spot while Mike Wedelstadt ran in third.
Schraufnagel nosed out Mullen for the lead on lap thirteen, but Mullen fought
back and was back out in front on lap fourteen. Two more cautions interrupted
the battle for the lead. Brian Stern spun in turn two to bring out a caution
and then shortly thereafter a caution on lap nineteen occurred for debris in
turn three.
Mullen led on the restarts with Schraufnagel right behind. Schraufnagel,
however, had clipped a cone, which would result in a two position penalty at
the next interruption in action. Mullen and Schraufnagel continued their tense
fight for the lead position with Mullen using the outside groove while
Schraufnagel would dive low through the turns. Schraufnagel edged out in front
on lap twenty and again Mullen fought back into the top spot on lap
twenty-one. Two laps later it was Schraufnagel who moved out in front. Jim
Zdroik of Big Bend brought out the caution on lap twenty-five when he lost a
wheel on the back chute.
With the action stopped for the caution, the field was reset and the two
position penalty assessed to Schraufnagel. On the restart it was Mullen out in
front followed by Wedelstadt and Schraufnagel. Wedelstadt immediately went to
work on Mullen and at times the two raced side by side with Schraufnagel right
in the thick of the battle as well. Brian Stern would bring out the final
caution of the event on lap twenty-seven when he spun in turn two.
In the three lap dash to the finish, the action was intense. As the checkered
flag waved it was Scott Mullen who would cross the line first to claim the
win. Mike Wedelstadt finished in second with Jay Schraufnagel ending up in
third. Pete Parker of Kaukauna, who had started the event in row seven,
slipped by Dennis Haldemann in the closing laps to take fourth. Finishing in
sixth through tenth were Steve Mueller, Mike Sandholm, Frank Firari of Lowell,
Todd Dart of Algon and Chris Engels of Green Bay.
Modified B-Main wins were recorded by Benji LaCrosse and Pete Parker. Heat
race victories were registered by Brian Mullen, Steve Mueller, Mike Wedelstadt
and Dennis Haldemann.
Greg Hartlaub of Sheboygan Falls raced to his second win of the season in the
Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends 20-lap A-Main. Kevin Brill of Oostburg drove to
second. Early race leader, Aaron Rake of Beaver Dam, followed in third. Adam
Reed of Slinger ran near the front throughout the event and crossed the line
in fourth. Eric Barth of Sauk City charged from the last row to finish in
fifth. Barth, the track champion for the season at the Raceway at
Powercom Park, also recently claimed the Masters Division National
title.
Legend heat race wins were taken by Adam Reed and Joel Wyttenbach of Sauk
City.
Dave Gorny of West Allis picked up the win in the Northwoods Paper Converting
Grand Nationals/Sportsman 20-lap A-Main. Gorny led the first seven circuits
only to give way to Pat Heaney of West Allis. Gorny was able to retake the
lead after a restart on lap fourteen and remained out in front the rest of the
way. Roger Lee of Wind Lake followed in second ahead of Larry Richards of
Montello. Kenny Richards of Montello drove to fourth. Jeff Owens of Randolph
was fifth.
Grand National/Sportsman heat race wins were recorded by Pat Heaney and Roger
Lee.
