High Horsepower Machines At Powercom Park On Memorial Day
IRA Sprint Cars And WDLMA Late Models Share The
Twilight Card
May 20, 2004
BEAVER DAM, WI – Fans of high powered race cars will get their fill on
Memorial Day at The Raceway at Powercom Park as the track plays host to Glen
Hepfner Incorporated Twin 30’s, a doubleheader program featuring the
Interstate Racing Association sprint cars and Wisconsin Dirt Late Model
Association super late models.
Both divisions will compete in a full program. Twin 30-lap feature races
will highlight the evening’s activities. Racing is slated to begin at
4:00 pm with IRA sprint car qualifying set to take the track one hour earlier.
The show will also be a tribute to a long time Powercom Park and IRA sprint
car fan, David Barden, who passed away earlier this year. The
Pardeeville man enjoyed all forms of motorsports but his true love was sprint
car racing.
Barden’s family and friends have set the May 31st event aside as a special
tribute to him. All involved knew that Barden, who lived in Pardeeville,
would have been no where else but Powercom Park for this show.
A full field of cars can be expected in each division. As many as 40 IRA
sprint cars are expected along with nearly 30 WDLMA late models.
“For the fans that like fast cars and high dollar equipment this is the show
to see over the Memorial Day weekend,” said Steve Sinclair, President of the
IRA. “I know our guys are all looking forward to going back to
Powercom and racing. The track is always good and the racing there is
fast and pretty exciting.
“I expect the same thing out of the late model class. We have run
several shows around the state of Wisconsin with late models as the second
main class and it has worked well. The WDLMA brings a great mix of
drivers from the Milwaukee area and also Northeastern Wisconsin. It will
be a good show.”
The program at Powercom will be the third in three days for the sprint
cars. Racing from Jackson, MN, through West Union, IA, and onto Beaver
Dam the road warriors will definitely be challenged over the Memorial Day
weekend.
“It’s tough on the guys but we have done it before and it works well,”
Sinclair said. “Running three nights is hard on the cars but there is
also money to be had on those nights, too. It’s a great way for us to
get out and showcase our product to three different markets. And, to end
up at Powercom works well because it is close to home for a lot of our drivers
and teams.”
The Powercom Park program is scheduled to be the third ever for the WDLMA.
Opening at the Powercom Speed Zone in Oshkosh on May 18th the fledgling
sanctioning body drew a strong field of 30 cars with a 50-50 mix between
Milwaukee based teams and those from WISSOTA strong northern areas.
“I like what they are doing with the WDLMA and where it may be going,”
said Wisconsin Motorsports’ General Manager Rex Melius. “The car
count at Oshkosh was outstanding for their first show. I would like to
think about the same numbers will be had for the race at Powercom Park.”
The program will be the second of the weekend at the track. A regular
Saturday night event is also planned with five divisions of cars in
action. Race time Saturday is 7:00 pm.
The Raceway at Powercom Park is located just off of Highway 151 on Highway 33
in Beaver Dam. For more information contact the track office at (920)
