Schultz Holds Off Voigt For Modified Win

One hundred fourteen cars were on hand for the Karavan Trailer Sales Icebreaker 100 regular season opener at the Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, WI on Saturday night.

Dennis Schultz of Oshkosh jumped into the lead at the start of the 20-lap Suburban Motors Harley-Davison/Buell Modified A-Main. Schultz was quickly challenged by Andy Voigt of Beaver Dam. The two engaged in a fierce battle for the top spot with Voigt moving out front on lap thirteen. Schultz quickly answered with a pass using the outside groove to retake the lead a lap later. Voigt continued to put heavy pressure on Schultz trying several times to move into the top spot. Voigt gave it one more try as the pair exited turn four on the final lap, but it was Schultz who drove across the line first to register the win. Following Schultz and Voigt across the line was Russ Reinwald of Plainfield, who had charged from the sixth row. Pete Laubmeier of Mazomanie ran a strong race and finished in fourth. Shawn Frelich of Kaukauna started the season on a strong note with a fifth place finish.

Jerry Kope of Oshkosh, the 2003 Powercom Speedzone champion, made the trip south and showed the form that led him to that championship by leading from start to finish to capture the 20-lap Dodge Central Credit Union Stocks A-Main. Don VanderGalien of Wautoma held off the challenges of Trevor Schmidt of Hartford to finish in second. 2003 Raceway at Powercom Park champion, Nate Schepp of Beaver Dam, drove to fourth ahead of Ryan Ley of Helenville.

F.W. Formiller of Oshkosh took over the lead on lap nine of the 20-lap Northwoods Paper Converting Grand Nationals A-Main after leaders Thomas O’Rourke of Sun Prairie, Tim Doehling of Winneconne and Steve Seitz of Beaver Dam were involved in an incident in turn two. Formiller was smooth the rest of the way and took the checkered flag ahead of 2003 Raceway at Powercom Park champion Troy Weich of Fond du Lac. Dean Stadler of Oshkosh drove to third. Steve Seitz came back strong to finish in fourth. Josh Borden of Port Washington came across the line in fifth.

The Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends A-Main proved to be one of the most hotly contested events of the evening. Kevin Brill of Oostburg grabbed the lead at the start of the 20-lap event closely pursued by Ron Smith of Speedway, IN. Eric Barth of Sauk City soon joined Brill and Smith and the trio put on an exciting battle for the top spot the rest of the way. With only a couple of laps remaining, Brill developed a problem on his car and fell from contention.  Smith held off Barth over the remaining distance to record the win. Greg Hartlaub of Sheboygan Falls moved up from the fourth row to finish in third. Darwin Banes of Beaver Dam returned to action after a year off and drove a strong race to finish in fourth. Eddie Mecum of Machesney Park, IL followed in fifth.

The Wally’s Auto 20-lap Dirt Devil A-Main saw another trio battle it out for the top spot. Tim Thrun of Horicon, Jasper Drengler of Shawano and Matt Rechek of Beaver Dam each took turns up front, but it was Drengler who emerged the victor crossing the line first ahead of Rechek and Thrun. Roger Frank of Beaver Dam drove to fourth ahead of Kevin Schutz of Madison.

Heat race wins were registered by Andy Voigt, Larry Zirbel of Iron Ridge, Dennis Schultz and Ryan Besaw of Omro in the modifieds, Jerry Kope and Don VanderGalien in the stocks, Tim Doehling and F.W. Formiller in the grand nationals, Kevin Brill and Ron Smith in the legends and Jasper Drengler, Matt Rechek, Jon Schultz of Belleville and Tim Thrun in the dirt devils. B-Main wins went to Mike Klenz of Sobieski and Dennis Krause of Oconomowoc in the modifieds and Jason McHughs of Beaver Dam in the dirt devils.
