Mathews Dominates ASL 150 At I-94 Raceway
by Dean Reller
SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 3, 2005) - Ryan Mathews turned in one of the best races
of his career as he dominated the American Stockcar League (ASL) July
Spectacular 150 at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Rookie driver Nate Thiesse
took the lead from the start as outside front row starter Trevor Stewart
pulled in behind. Third starting Mathews moved to the bottom and took the lead
on lap four. John Vig Jr. stepped up into the second spot and worked Mathews
hard, pulling alongside for several laps. Vig’s bid for the win ended on lap
28, when he blew his engine on the backstraight. After the cleanup, Mathews
had Paul Paine looking to make a bid for the lead. Paine would fall back
slightly as Kevin Cywinski and Bryan Reffner would stage a race of their own
as they swapped positions, allowing Mathews to stretch his lead even further.
At the halfway break on lap 76, Mathews had nearly a full straightaway lead
over Cywinski who had about that much advantage over Paine. All the teams made
adjustments during the 10 minute mandatory break.
When racing resumed, Mathews took off as Cywinski and Paine traded the second
spot. Lapped traffic, despite being heavy at times, didn’t slow Mathews and
the torrid pace he was setting up front. Cywinski and Paine split the lapped
cars and this allowed Trevor Stewart to gain ground in fourth. On lap 121,
Stewart moved past Cywinski to take third. Seven laps later, Stewart snuck
past Paine and began to cut into Mathews nearly half a lap lead. Without the
aid of a caution, Stewart ran out of time as Mathews finished off the race to
score his first career ASL win.
John Vig Jr. was all smiles as he exited from his truck after winning the
Mid-Am Super Truck Feature. John Froelich led the early going, as Donnie
Woller, Bill Prietzel, Vig and Mark Storlie made it tight at the front of the
field. Woller would make the outside lane work as he took over the lead, just
past the halfway mark. Prietzel challenged Woller for the lead, but that would
be put on hold as Froelich dumped fluid all over the track. After an extended
cleanup, Woller had Vig working him for the lead. Vig would take the spot with
five to go and quickly moved away from Prietzel. Vig finished off the
remaining laps to take home the win.
Patrick Amelung capped off the weekend as he won his second ASA Thunder Car
Feature in as many days. Starting from the pole, Amelung took off with Matt
Hoeschen right behind. Only one caution, for Matt Hendrickson’s spin, slowed
the race as Amelung led every lap and took the win. Hoeschen stayed with
Amelung and finished second, while Pat Henry took third.
Andy Mayavski captured his second UCAR Feature of the season in the 20 lap
event. Mayavski took the lead from Jay Gronewold on the opening lap. Dan
Bolstad moved to second and held off a long list of competitors as he tried to
catch up with Mayavski. That wasn’t in the cards for Bolstad as Mayavski led
flag-to-flag for the win.
Tony Robertson made it two-for-two this season as he won the TQ Stock Car
Feature. Robertson grabbed the lead from the onset, but Steve Strandlund took
the lead away on lap two. Robertson stayed right with Strandlund and on lap
nine, he retook the lead. Strandlund stayed next to and behind Robertson the
rest of the way as Robertson rolled on to the win.
