From 27th to First; Campbell Wins ASALM A.S.I. Limited 100
By ASA Late Model Series
Clermont, Indiana (04/28/2007): The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM
Performance Parts Northern Division has completed their 2007 Season Opener as
Race Number One of the 2007 Campaign; The A.S.I. Limited 100 Presented by
Lucas Oil Products and Ed Martin Automotive Group is now in the record books.
The Cars and Stars of the ASALMS Northern Division were at the immaculate
O'Reilly (IN) Raceway Park at Indianapolis on Saturday April 28, 2007 for the
2007 Season Opener for the second year series; The A.S.I. Limited 100
Presented by Lucas Oil Products and Ed Martin Automotive Group.
In what was the greatest comeback in ASALMS history; Brian Campbell started
27th and took the lead on Lap 88 when the A.S.I. Limited Chevrolet Monte Carlo
of then race leader, Sean Murphy pulled into the pits after running out of
gas!
Campbell would then hold off charges from Rookie Troy Hintzsche, who also ran
out of gas with Five Laps to go, and then Indianapolis' own., Peter Cozzolino
who mustered up a late charge. Campbell would go on and make ASALMS history by
winning the A.S.I. Limited 100 Presented by Lucas Oil Products and Ed Martin
Automotive Group!
The Wyoming, Michigan driver also became the first driver in ASALMS history to
win both the GM Performance Parts Shootout and the Main Feature on the same
day and set an ASALMS record by starting the farthest back in the field of any
ASALMS winner in the Five Year Overall history of the ASALMS!
The second A.S.I. Limited Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Michigan Motorsports
Hall of Fame Driver, Butch Miller and Ironton, Minnesota pilot, Trent Snyder
led the potent 30-car field to Chief Starter, Tom Powell's Green Flag to begin
the 2007 Season Opener for the ASALMS Northern Division and it would be Miller
beating Snyder to the first corner to take the lead to the delight of the
A.S.I. Limited contingent in the grandstands.
Miller pulled away from the pack while his A.S.I. Limited Teammate and ARP
Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Sean Murphy, who drew a six
for an inversion putting Miller on the pole for the 2007 ASALMS Northern
Division Season Opener, began his charge to the front from his outside Third
Row starting spot and within 15 laps was up to second.
Murphy began reeling in the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame driver and was
on Miller's back bumper by Lap 20. The second of only Five cautions came on
that same lap as Wes Griffith Jr., slammed the Turn Four wall hard. He was ok,
but was done for the evening.
On the restart, Murphy began building momentum on the high side and coming out
of Turn Four on Lap 25, drove around the outside of the legendary driver and
beat Miller across the start/finish line to take the lead! From there, Murphy
began to pull away from the rest of the pack and was definitely the car to
beat.
The Fort Lauderdale, Florida Rookie, the only driver to compete in every
ASALMS event within all three divisions in 2007 to this point, set a torrid
pace and put some distance between himself and Miller and picked off lapped
cars at a rapid rate.
Meanwhile back in the field, Brian Campbell, the winner of the 25-lap GM
Performance Parts Shootout, which transferred the Top Four into the 100-lap
Feature and started 27th was one of the fastest cars on the track and with 20
laps to go, found himself on Miller's back bumper. On lap 84, Campbell made
the pass for second and set his sights on Murphy who had a full straight away
lead.
The last of Five Cautions flew on lap 87 when Danny Ouderkirk stopped in the
middle of the backstretch, out of gas, to bring out the Yellow Flag. As the
Safety Truck pushed Ouderkirk into the pit area, Murphy slowed as well and
limped his machine into the pit area, also out of gas! This gave the lead to
Campbell, completing his 27th to First Place run!
On the last restart, Campbell had Rookie Troy Hintzsche all over his back
bumper as Hintzsche's Dodge Charger looked high and low, trying to figure out
a way around the Wyoming, Michigan driver when with Five Laps to go, Hintzsche
slowed, also out of gas! This gave second spot to Indianapolis veteran, Peter
Cozzolino and one final shootout ensued.
Campbell was up to the challenge however as the Great Lakes State Driver held
off one last charge from Cozzolino and would take the checkered flag to
complete the biggest comeback in ASALMS history by winning the A.S.I. Limited
100 Presented by Lucas Oil Products and Ed Martin Automotive Group!
Cozzolino settled for second while Rookie Jesse Saunders finished a career
high third. Another Rookie, Bryan Clauson, from near-by Noblesville, Indiana
and driving for the Chip Ganassi Racing Driver Development Program, finished a
career high Fourth over Travis Dassow.
Outside front row starter, Trent Snyder finished sixth ahead of 2006 ASALMS
Northern Division Rookie of the Year, Derek Neville. One more rookie, Nick
Schumacher also came from the GM Performance Parts Shootout with Campbell,
started 28th and finished a strong Eighth.
Kasey Kahne Racing Development Driver, Ryan Durst, in the second of two Mopar
Powered Crate Engines in the field, finished a career high Ninth while Anthony
Danta, a third car that transferred from the GM Shootout, started 29th and
completed the Top 10 in 10th.
Earlier in the evening, Murphy shattered the ASALMS Track Record with a lap
measured at a 21.960 which measures out to a fast 112.459 MPH. The track
record for the ASALMS Northern Division was set back on July 22, 2006 when
Landon Cassill, now with NASCAR powerhouse, Hendrick Motorsports, turned a
22.259 around the 0.686 Mile Progressively Banked Paved Oval. Overall 13
drivers broke Cassill's track record.
In the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout, Campbell won his first event of
the night by leading all 25 laps in the caution free event to earn the 27th
starting spot in the 100-lap Feature. Nick Schumacher finished second while
Anthony Danta and 17-year-old Phil Gill also transferred to the Feature. Curt
Van Der Wal was the first car on the outside looking in as he completed the
Top Five.
