Dassow Wins First Career ASALMS Challenge Division Feature
By ASA Late Model Series
Toledo, Ohio (04/21/2007): The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM
Performance Parts has completed Race Number Three of the Fifth Anniversary
2007 Racing Season for "America's Premiere Short Track Series". The
Glass Breaker 200 is now in the record books.
The Cars and Stars of the ASALMS Challenge Division were at the historic
Toledo (OH) Speedway, located right across the Michigan/Ohio border in Toledo,
Ohio on Saturday April 21, 2007 for the running of the Glass Breaker 200.
After a thrilling side by side dual that lasted for almost 10 laps, West Bend,
Wisconsin's Travis Dassow passed Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year
Points Leader, Derek Thorn with five laps to go to win his first career ASALMS
Challenge Division Feature!
Current ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, Colt James and Third Place in
points going into the night, Charlie Menard led a strong 27-car field to Chief
Starter, Tim Goodlet's green flag to begin the highly anticipated Glass
Breaker 200.
Things happen in a hurry at the Toledo Speedway as the first of 13 cautions
flew on Lap Three when Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title
contender, Andy Hanson spun around in Turn Four. Hanson would make the long
trek to the back of the field with plenty of time left to get back to the
front of the pack.
The next caution flew on Lap 10 when Menard tried the inside of James in an
effort to take the lead but ran over the rumble strips on the bottom of the
corner and spun in Turn Two and like Hanson, Menard would also go to the back
of the field.
James continued to set the pace while the rest of the field jockeyed for
position. Behind James, Brian Campbell was trying to fend off 5K Motorsports
teammates, Kris Stump and Current Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year
Points Leader, Derek Thorn.
On lap 64 Stump's car suddenly veered out of the groove and the only driver
representing the state of Ohio slammed the Turn One wall hard! The Tipp City,
Ohio driver was ok, but his string of bad luck to start the 2007 season
continues and he was done for the evening and credited with a 27th place
finish.
On the restart, Campbell and Thorn began to apply pressure to James who
maintained the lead. Finally Campbell, the 2005 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of
the Year, began working the inside of James, who had moved up to the outside
groove.
Finally on lap 76, Campbell made the pass for the lead coming out of Turn Four
to the delight of the crowd on hand who remembered his Father, Michigan
legend, Fred Campbell from his Iceman Super Car Series days in the Mid 1990s.
Campbell took over the top spot with James and Thorn in tow.
Campbell would lead the field into the Lap 100 halfway break. James was second
followed by Travis Dassow, Thorn, Peter Cozzolino, Ryan Lawler, Keeton Hanks,
Michael Annett, Dave Kuhlman, and Jesse Smith, who completed the Top 10.
On the restart, Campbell continued to set the pace while ASALMS Challenge
Division Points Leader, James looked high and low, trying to figure out a way
back around the Wyoming, Michigan driver.
After several laps of side by side action, the two drivers touched once down
the front stretch on lap 136 and then several more times going into Turns One
and Two before both got sideways resulting in a spinning Campbell sliding up
into the Turn Two wall while James gathered his machine back and kept moving
forward.
The caution flew as a result as Campbell sat idle up against the wall and was
too severely damaged to continue while James would reassume the lead. James
would continue to lead when on lap 144, a massive 10-car pile-up ensued in
Turns One and Two when some debris struck a car and triggered the pile-up. In
all six cars were done for the evening while the other four continued on. Two
of those would later drop out as well.
On the ensuing restart, James had to deal with Thorn and Dassow who were now
second and third. Thorn moved to the inside of James on lap 159 and coming out
of Turn Two would take over the lead bringing Dassow with him.
Thorn and Dassow then pulled away from the rest of the pack and got down to
business. Dassow pulled up along-side Thorn on lap 185 and the two drivers
waged a spirited battle between them. Dicing through lapped traffic, even
splitting a lapped car down the back stretch and remaining side by side as the
crowd was on their feet.
Finally on lap 196, Dassow made his pass down the back stretch count and took
over the lead and begin to pull away. Dassow, who teamed up with the former
Waltom Racing Team, the champions of the last two seasons with Stephen Leicht
in 2005 and Kelly Bires in 2006, steered his Chicago Regional Council of
Carpenters/Nestle USA/Willy Wonka Candy Chevrolet Monte Carlo into victory
lane to win his first ever ASALMS in his third season of ASALMS competition.\
Derek Thorn, the Current Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Points
Leader, backed up his Feature Win back on March 31, 2007 at the Music City
(TN) Motorplex with a second place showing in Toledo, Ohio while Current
ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, Colt James maintained his points lead
heading to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday and Saturday May 11-12, 2007 for the
Crate Engine Classic 200 with a solid third place showing.
17-year-old Keeton Hanks picked up his second straight Top Five finish with a
fourth place while Eddie Hoffman made his way through the field, after
restarting at the back of the pack after a lap 80 incident with Michael Simko,
to record his third straight Top Five finish with a Fifth Place effort.
Peter Cozzolino finished sixth while Michael Annett was seventh. Andy Hanson,
Charlie Menard, and Sean Murphy all recovered from earlier incidents and
having to start at the rear of the field to post Top 10 finishes and round out
the Top 10.
Earlier in the afternoon in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying,
Eddie Hoffman picked up his first Fast Qualifier Award of the season as the
Wheaton, Illinois veteran toured the fast 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval in
his Lisa Thomas Salon/Terry's Ford.com Ford Fusion at a 15.766. Hoffman's lap
measures out to 114.369 MPH.
