Hoffman Wins All-American 200, Takes Home Second Copley Guitar Of The Season
Nashville, Tennessee (11/05/2006): The 24th annual All-American 400 Weekend
for the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts is now in the
books; The ASALMS Challenge Division, as well as the Northern and Southern
Divisions all went head to head this weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.
The historic Music City (TN) Motorplex, located on the beautiful Tennessee
State Fairgrounds in Nashville, Tennessee served as gracious hosts for one of
the biggest end of the season special events in the United States. The ASA
Late Model Series and the CRA Super Series, were co-headlining this weekend
show.
This was the last of the televised events for the ASALMS events in 2006. The
Challenge Division events for the season were televised and are currently
being shown on a tape delayed basis on The Men's Outdoor and Recreation
Network, I-Drive TV, and Mav TV networks, all available on Dish Network as
well as select cable outlets.
Airings for the events are on a tape delayed basis on Wednesdays at 7:00pm on
IDrive TV and then again at 4:30pm on the Men's Outdoor and Recreation network
on Saturdays followed by a repeat airing back on IDrive also on Saturdays at
9:00pm.
As for the ASALMS portion of the 24th annual All-American 400 Weekend, ARP
Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Eddie Hoffman took the lead
from Derek Thorn on lap 173 and from there, the Wheaton, Illinois veteran went
on to win on the biggest races of his storied career and his second Copley
Guitar of the year!
Earlier this season, Hoffman picked up his first Copley Guitar when he won the
2006 ASALMS Challenge Division opener, the Waffle House 200 Presented by
Dollar General back on March 18, 2006 at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds speed
plant.
Jack Smith and Bobby Parsley led a star studded 34-car field to chief starter,
Tim Goodlet's green flag to begin the 200-lap Feature in Nashville. Trouble
ensued immediately as Music City Weekly Late Model competitor, Andy Johnson
spun in turn four and slammed the inside retaining wall. He was ok, but done
for the day.
The front row of Smith and Parsley battled side by side on the restart with
Parsley edging out to the early lead while the rest of the field settled in
behind him. Lakeport, California driver, Derek Thorn soon worked his way past
Smith for second and set his sights on Parsley.
The second of 11 cautions flew on lap 25 when Travis Wilson and 2006 ASALMS
Southern Division Champion and Rookie of the Year, 16-year-old James Buescher
go together in turns 3-4 and collected Kris Stump in the process. All three
were done for the afternoon.
On the restart Parsley tried all he could to hold back the advances of Thorn,
but it would be Thorn who would use the outside groove to his advantage and
after building up momentum, Thorn took the lead away from Parsley on lap 36.
Smith tried to follow Thorn through, but Parsley shut the door on the Buckeye
State veteran while Thorn pulled away from the pack. Soon Parsley and Smith
were joined by ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Eddie
Hoffman and the trio got together in an attempt to catch Thorn, who opened up
a huge lead on the field.
On lap 53, Wes Griffith Jr., spun and Jacob Goede, in the second WalTom Racing
entry had nowhere to go and slammed into the side of Griffith Jr., ended both
of their days. On the restart, Thorn again pulled out to a comfortable lead
while Parsley, Smith, and Hoffman followed and were soon joined by 17-year-old
Keeton Hanks.
The carnage continued as the next caution flew on lap 74 when Ryan Lawler and
Jason Burchard got together coming down the back stretch and the end result
saw Burchard slam the turn three wall.
Thorn would lead the field on the restart and to the Lap 100 halfway break
with Parsley, Smith, Hoffman, Hanks, John Wes Townley, Lawler, Nick Neville,
Landon Cassill, and Brian Campbell rounding out the Top 10.
The second half began with Thorn continuing to lead but all eyes were on
Parsley, Smith, and Hoffman battling. Another caution flew on lap 114 when
perennial favorite, Landon Cassill lost a motor going into turn three and was
done.
The next restart saw Smith and Hoffman battle side by side for the next
several laps with things finally coming to a head on lap 136 when both Smith
and Hoffman headed for the same piece of real estate in turn three and
touched, sending Smith around and into the turn three wall, which ended his
day.
Thorn continued to lead but Hoffman began his charge to the front and got by
Parsley and set his sights on Thorn. On lap 145 Hoffman pulled up next to
Thorn and the two pilots battled tooth and nail for nearly 30 laps as they
both diced for position.
Finally on lap 173 Hoffman edged out ahead of Thorn for the first time and
would take the lead for good a lap later. Parsley tried to get by Thorn as
well but Thorn stood his ground and maintained second spot with Parsley, Brian
Campbell, and Hanks giving chase.
The final caution flew on lap 190 when Ryan Lawler and John Wes Townley
touched going into turn one sending Townley hard into the turn one wall.
Trevor Sanborn, in the primary WalTom Racing ride has nowhere to go and
slammed into Townley. Both were done for the day and Lawler was sent to the
rear of the field. Lawler instead elected to park his ride for the afternoon
and called it a day.
Hoffman led the field to the green flag for the final restart and began
pulling away from the pack. Thorn tried one last time to catch Hoffman but it
wasn't to be as Hoffman pulled away again and the Wheaton, Illinois veteran
went on to win his second Copley Guitar of the season and one of the biggest
feature wins of his long career!
Thorn led 136 laps before settling for an impressive second place finish while
Parsley, Campbell, Hanks, Chad Wood, Jason Setser, Nick Neville, Peter
Cozzolino from 32nd, and Devan Hall completed the Top 10.
Earlier in the weekend, Hoffman broke the ASALMS Track Record around the fast
0.596 mile high-banked paved oval as he went around the Tennessee State
Fairgrounds speed plant at a fast 18.718, which measures out to a very fast
114.628 MPH.
The track record for the ASALMS was set back on March 18, 2006 during the 2006
Challenge Division season opener that Hoffman won! Jake Ryan went an 18.741
back in March on the Challenge Division's Hoosier Radial Tires. For this
event, the North VS South All-Star Showdown/All-American 200 is a Hoosier
Bias-Ply Tire Race.
Then in the twin 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootouts, Ryan Carlson and
Nathan Haseleu took the wins to advance to the North VS South All-Star
Showdown/All-American 200.
The next event for the ASALMS will be the Mason-Dixon Dixieland Challenge II
at the DeVos (MI) Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday and Sunday
December 16-27, 2006 in the first ever indoors events in ASALMS history.
Both nights will be complete shows of Qualifying, GM Performance Parts
Shootouts, if necessary, and 50-lap Features with a bonus going to any driver
that can sweep both Features inside the flat concrete oval.
