Bires Puts Exclamation Point On 2006
By: ASA Late Model Series

Lexington, Michigan (10/17/2006): The crown jewel of the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts, the televised Challenge Division has completed it's final points race of the 2006 season at the immaculate Iowa (IA) Speedway in Newton, Iowa on Saturday October 14, 2006.

The ASALMS Challenge Divisions 2006 Season Championships were at the fast 7/8s mile progressively banked paved oval located East of Des Moines in Newton, Iowa for the 11th and final points race of the 2006 season for the televised ASALMS Challenge Division; The Northland Oil 250 Presented by TMC Transportation.

The ASALMS Challenge Division events in 2006 are being televised on a tape delayed basis The Men’s Outdoor and Recreation Network, I-Drive TV, and Mav TV networks, all available on Dish Network as well as select cable outlets.

Airings for the events will be on a tape delayed basis on Wednesdays at 7:00pm on IDrive TV and then again at 4:30pm on the Men’s Outdoor and Recreation network on Saturdays followed by a repeat airing back on IDrive also on Saturdays at 9:00pm.

2006 ASALMS Challenge Division Champion and Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year, Kelly Bires put an exclamation point on an already successful 2006 season as the Mauston, Wisconsin freshman led the final 230 laps to win his sixth Challenge Division, and seventh overall ASALMS Feature win of the 2006 season!

Hometown favorite from near-by Des Moines, Iowa, Michael Annett and 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, 17-year-old Jesse Smith led a star studded 31-car field to chief starter, Tim Goodlet’s green flag to begin the longest distance race in the ASALMS’ four year history!

After a lap of side by side racing, Annett beat out Smith to the start/finish line to lead the first lap to roar of the partisan crowd on hand. Later that same lap, the first of 13 cautions flew when Alison Quick, the 2006 GM Performance Parts Shootout Champion in the ASALMS Northern Division, and making her first career Challenge Division start, spun in turn four.

On the restart, Annett pulled out to a sizable lead as 2006 ASALMS Challenge Division Champion and Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year, Kelly Bires was beginning his charge to the front from his sixth starting spot. Bires was soon in second and began reeling in Annett.

Finally on lap 21, Bires steered his WalTom Racing Ford Fusion around Annett to take the lead away from the Des Moines’ pilot. On lap 33 a caution came out for Chad Wood, who entered the weekend second in the season long points chase, who backed his Ford Fusion into the turn two wall after contact between him and Wes Griffith Jr., Wood was done for the evening.

Seven laps later, Denver, Colorado visitor, Bear Lynch found the turn three wall, ending his night. On the ensuing restart, Bires would ease out to a huge lead over the field and despite five more cautions prior to the halfway break, Bires would begin lapping cars at a rapid rate.

At the ½ way, 125-lap mark, Bires led over Peter Cozzolino, Annett, Kris Stump, Brent Downey, Dean Cornelius, Chris Sevey, Brian Campbell, Landon Cassill, and Travis Dassow, the Top 10.

On the restart, Bires picked up where he left off and again pulled away from the second place car, this time Indianapolis, Indiana veteran, Peter Cozzolino. Another caution on lap 136 saw, Brian Campbell slide hard into the turn four wall after coming from the back of the pack. The 2005 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year was also done for the evening.

All the while Bires would pull away from the field and at various points would have nearly a half a track lead on the competition. Cozzolino’s night ended on lap 224 when he slid up into the turn four wall ending his night.

Stump, who was now in second, tried in vain to mount a serious challenge to Bires, but the Mauston, Wisconsin driver, who led since lap 21 wouldn’t give the lead up and never faltered all race long.

Stump tried to muster up a late race challenge with 10 laps to go, but Bires was too strong and would go on to win his sixth Challenge Division and seventh overall ASALMS Feature win of the 2006 season!

The Mauston, Wisconsin driver, who will vie for the Rookie of the Year title in 2007 with the NASCAR Craftsman Trucks Series would stamp an exclamation point on his 2006 titles with the victory and in the process, tie him with former WalTom Racing driver, Stephen Leicht for the most wins in ASALMS Challenge Division history with six apiece!

Stump settled for second as Annett would finish third in his first Challenge Division start to stay on the podium. Landon Cassill, from 30th earned the Hard-Charger Award for the event by finishing fourth ahead of Chris Sevey, Dean Cornelius, ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier, Travis Dassow, Eddie Hoffman, Andy Hanson, and Charlie Menard would complete the Top 10.

Earlier in the evening, Travis Dassow established the track record around the fast 7/8s mile progressively banked paved oval with a 23.256 lap, which measures out to a blistering 133.838 MPH. There was no GM Performance Parts Shootout held for this event, so Eddie Hoffman was crowned the 2006 GM Performance Parts Shootout Champion for the Challenge Division.

The final points race of the 2006 season overall for the ASALMS will be for the Southern Division. The entry form for the 14th and final race of the 2006 season for the ASALMS Southern Division, the Texas All-Star Southern Shootout Twin 75s is available.

The San Antonio (TX) Speedway in San Antonio, Texas will host the 14th and final points race of the 2006 season, which also happens to be the 2006 ASALMS Southern Division Season Championships on Saturday October 21, 2006.

The fast ½ mile semi-banked paved oval will see the battles for both the ASALMS Southern Division Championship as well as the 2006 Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year titles come to a conclusion in the first of two 75-lap Features in Southern Texas, which pays $3000 to win.

The second 75-lap Feature will be a non-points affair paying $5000 to win and an additional $2000 if the winner of the first Feature can bring home the second 75-lap Feature. In all total, a potential for $10,000 is on the line for any driver who can sweep both ends of the Texas Twins!

In addition, it'll be $500 to start each 75-lap Feature, so every car on hand that takes the green flag for both Features will go home with a minimum of $1000.

The entry form for the Texas All-Star Southern Shootout Twin 75s is available and due to the ASALMS Home offices by TODAY Tuesday October 17, 2006 to avoid the late fees. You can download the Texas All-Star Southern Shootout Twin 75s entry form by going to the link below:
