With the win, not only did Bires pad his already large overall points lead,
the Mauston, Wisconsin freshman also clinched the 2006 Pat Bourdow Memorial
Rookie of the Year Championship with two points races still remaining!
Dean Cornelius and Terry Schoppenhorst led the huge 33-car field to the green
flag to begin the 150 mile Feature as Cornelius would grab the top spot away
from fellow from row starter, Schoppenhorst to lead the field.
The first of seven cautions flew on lap one when Chris Lester looped his mount
in turn four. On the restart, ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast
Qualifier, Chad Wood started his charge towards the front of the pack from his
eighth starting spot and was right on Cornelius back bumper.
On lap nine, Wood would get around the Chaska, Minnesota freshman to take the
early lead. Wood brought current ASALMS Challenge Division Overall and
eventual 2006 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year, Kelly Bires with him
and the two Wisconsin pilots would pull away to battle on Wisconsin's biggest
and oldest facility!
On lap 20, Bires would get by Wood to take the lead and begin to pull away
from the field. One of the most serious incidents occurred on lap 26 when
17-year-old Jesse Smith, the current points leader in the companion ASALMS
Northern Division slammed the turn two wall hard! He was ok, but the car was
done for the afternoon.
Bires would try and pull away from the pack on the restart and would lead the
field into the lap 75 halfway break! Wood would pull in for service in second
ahead of Charlie Menard, Jake Ryan, Butch Miller, Jack Smith from 33rd, Eddie
Hoffman, Brian Campbell, Schoppenhorst, and Jeff VanOudenhoven, the Top 10 at
halfway!
On the restart, Wood tried to keep pace with Bires new paint scheme and
new Ford Fusion body on his WalTom Racing entry, but Bires was stout
throughout the remainder of the event.
The second serious accident occurred on lap 84 when Dan Lensing hit the turn
two wall in almost the identical spot as Jesse Smith did earlier in the event.
Like Smith, he was ok but also done for the evening.
Bires would pull away one more time on what would be the final restart and
would lose both Wood and Jake Ryan, who maneuvered up to third, in lapped
traffic. Bires pulled away to nearly a four second lead and would go on to win
his fourth ASALMS Challenge Division Feature of the season.
With the win, Bires fifth overall in ASALMS competition, the Mauston,
Wisconsin freshman would also clinch the 2006 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of
the Year Championship with two points races yet to go in the 2006 campaign!

Jonathan Eilen, Brian Campbell, Landon Cassill, and Brent Downey would
complete the Top 10.
