Dave Klein Wins ASALMS Wisconsin 151
By ASA Late Model Series
Lexington, Michigan (08/07/2006): The ASA Late Model Series Northern Division
Presented by GM Performance Parts has completed race number eight on the 2006 calendar;
the Wisconsin 151 Presented by Sign 1-1.
The ASALMS Northern Division’s eighth race of the 2006 season at the
Columbus 151 (WI) Speedway saw perhaps the biggest upset in ASALMS history as
Madison, Wisconsin veteran, Dave Klein score the biggest Feature win of his
career and first ever ASALMS victory!
Bob Varney and Dave Klein led the 20-car field to chief starter, Tim
Goodlet’s green flag to begin the extended distance 151-lap Feature. Varney
grabbed the lead away form Klein on the start and paced the field while the
rest of the pilots jockeyed for position.
On lap 12 Klein moved to the inside of Varney, who drifted high and took over
the top spot, while Varney fell backwards on the outside groove and was
freight-trained before settling back in the field in seventh.
Several cautions, 10 in all total and mostly for harmless spins slowed the
pace. On each start however, Klein would get a good jump on the field and
would pull away to nearly a full straight away lead.
Sign 1-1 Fast Qualifier, Michael Annett worked his way back through the field
after being sent to the rear early in the event. After battling with current
ASALMS Northern Division Points Leader, Jack Smith, Annett found himself in
second and began his charge for the lead.
Several times Annett would get close, but could never muster up a serious
challenge on the Madison, Wisconsin veteran. After all was said and done,
Klein pulled away one final time and would score a major upset victory in
picking up his first career ASALMS Feature Win!
Annett tied a career high by finishing second ahead of Jason Setser, Jesse
Smith, Charlie Menard, Jack Smith, Wes Griffith Jr., Derek Neville, Alison
Quick, and Mark Hartline would complete the Top 10.
Earlier in the evening Appleton Rack and Pinions Rookie of the Year title
contender, Michael Annett established the track record around the ¼ mile
semi-banked paved oval with a 13.118.
Also earlier in the evening, Mark Hartline won the modified 12-lap GM
Performance Parts Shootout over Alison Quick, Mike Tetzlaff, Brian Bauman, and
Mike Osgar, the Top Five.
The next two events for the ASALMS Northern Division will see the cars and
stars of the North embark on one of the most prestigious weekends of the
season; the 2nd annual Michigan Doubles Weekend!
The cars and stars of the ASALMS Northern Division will spend the weekend in
the ASALMS home state of Michigan for a weekend double header beginning at the
Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway on Friday August 18, 2006 for the Lane Automotive 100
Presented by Tough Coat Powder Coatings. The ninth race of the 2006 season for
the ASALMS Northern Division.
The 10th race of the 2006 campaign will be the next night at the famed Berlin
(MI) Raceway on Saturday August 19, 2006 for the running of the U.A.W./United
Auto Workers 100.
