As for the Automotive Resources/AC-Delco 200, Current ASALMS Challenge
Division Overall as well as Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Points
Leader, Kelly Bires took the lead from Jack Smith on lap 63.
>From there, the Mauston, Wisconsin freshman then lost the current ASALMS
Northern Division Points Leader in lapped traffic en route to his third
Challenge Division and fourth overall ASALMS Feature Win.
Dunbar, Pennsylvania veteran, Rick Miller and ASALMS Northern Division Points
Leader, Jack Smith led the star studded 27-car field to chief starter, Tim
Goodlet's green flag to begin the deuce century feature.
Miller beat out Smith to the first corner to take the early lead while Smith
and the rest of the field jockeyed for position. The first of seven cautions
flew on just lap two when Kris Stump, who qualified second, backed his mount
into the turns three and four wall. He was ok and continued with a damaged
race car.
17 laps later on lap 19, ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier,
Chad Wood suddenly darted high and slammed the turn one wall ending his
evening! On the ensuing restart, Smith looked high and low trying to figure
out a way around the Keystone State veteran, Miller.
Finally on lap 36 Smith maneuvered around Miller to take the lead. He brought
Travis Dassow and current ASALMS Challenge Division Overall as well as Pat
Bourdow Memorial Rookie Points Leader, Kelly Bires with him and the trio
battled amongst themselves.
On lap 63 Bires went to the outside of Dassow for second and then a turn later
drove around Smith to take the lead away from the fellow points leader in the
ASALMS. Five laps later, Eddie Hoffman backed his machine into the turn two
wall and suffered only cosmetic damage. He was able to continue.
Bires lead the field into the 10 minute halfway break on lap 100 over Smith,
Bobby Stremme from 15th, Dassow, Peter Cozzolino, Brent Downey, Jesse Smith,
Landon Cassill, Charlie Menard, and Miller, the Top 10.
A lap into the start of the second 100, Miller spun in turn four to bring out
the sixth caution of the evening. On the restart, Bires tried in vain to check
out on the field, but Jack Smith wouldnt let Bires stray to far away.
The final caution flew on lap 137 when Greg Taylor spun heading down the
backstretch! On the final restart, Smith tried to keep pace with Bires, but
the Mauston, Wisconsin freshman was on a rail the rest of the night.
Bires would eventually lose Smith in lapped traffic and the 21-year-old would
go on to pad his points leads in both the Overall ASALMS Challenge Division as
well as the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie title chase in winning his third
Challenge Division and fourth overall ASALMS Feature win of the 2006 season!
Smith settled for second as Downey finished a career high third over Cozzolino,
Cassill, and Menard, the remaining cars on the lead lap! Dassow, Hoffman,
Jesse Smith, and Jeff VanOudenhoven completed the Top 10.
Earlier in the evening, Wood won his second ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing
Products Fast Qualifier Award of the season with a lap time of an 18.622. His
lap measured out to a fast 100.913 MPH. The GM Performance Parts Shootout was
scrapped for this event.
