The ASALMS Southern Division will be off over the holiday weekend, but the
Memorial Day Holiday weekend will offer the competitors of all three divisions
within the ASALMS, two opportunities to get their machines on the race track.
As for the Miller Lite 200, the cars and stars of the ASALMS Challenge
Division will take on the best the state of Wisconsin has to offer. Madison is
one of the facilities in the country that hosts an ASA Late Models Division on
a weekly basis. Those weekly competitors will be looking to defend their home
turf over the holiday weekend when the traveling invaders come to town.
Add in the fact that the third race of the season for the televised ASALMS
Challenge Division will showcase the cars and stars of the Challenge Division
against the top drivers from MIS on National Television, this will in turn
look to be the biggest races of the season at MIS.
The ASALMS Challenge Division will be televised during the 2006 season, on a
tape delayed basis on both the Men’s Channel as well as IDrive TV, beginning
in Mid-September.
“This race is all that everyone is talking about in our area. Most of our
phone calls are about this race and the Northern Division show on August
4th!” Stated Madison International Speedway Promoter, Steve Einhaus, who is
also the ASALMS Northern Division Series Director.
“This is important to our locals to try and make this race. These guys race
here weekly and the competition is very stiff so a lot of these guys will be
making a tough bid to make the show.” Einhaus continued. “The ASA name
back in the old National tour days, had always been a big tradition at MIS and
we are really looking forward to bringing the ASALMS to town and put on a
great show for the fans” He added.
The racers and fans will see a new MIS when they return for the Memorial Day
Holiday weekend event. “We have added a quarter mile on the inside of the ½
mile that utilizes the front stretch in a D shape form.” Einhaus stated.
“We'll be putting the pit wall back up over night on Friday to prepare for
Saturdays big event.” He ended.
“This is going to be a great show. The ASALMS events we’ve had the last
few years have been some of the best shows of the year.” Added MIS Owner,
Terry Kunes. “Our local drivers will be bringing their “A” game for this
one. I’m so excited that our local drivers will be able to just show up and
be able to compete against the travelers and put on a great show for our great
fans of Wisconsin.” Kunes added.
“Plus with the Miler Lite 200 on television on the Men’s Channel and
IDrive TV, our locals get the rare opportunity to show what they have on
national TV against some of the top teams in the country. There really is a
lot on the line in this race!” Kunes added.
The ASALMS has made three appearances in Madison over the years with two shows
in 2004 and one last season. In 2004, former NASCAR Winston (Now Nextel) Cup
Champion, Matt Kenseth won the Blain’s Farm and Fleet/Carhartt 100 on
Saturday May 8, 2004.
The feature was cut to 75 laps after Mother Nature intervened. Kenseth took
the win ahead of Ron Breese Jr., current NASCAR Busch Series Rookie contender,
Todd Kluever, Bobby Wilberg, and 2004 ASALMS Champion, Bobby Stremme, the Top
Five.
Kenseth still holds the track record for the ASALMS with a qualifying lap of
an 18.116 which he also set on May 8, 2004. That event also holds the all-time
ASALMS record for car count as 54 entries jammed the Madison International
Speedway pit area for the 2004 opener. That record looks to be threatened
again over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend!
Later on in 2004, Dan Lensing inherited the win in the Trackside Charities 100
on September 11, 2004 after Kluever, who crossed the start/finish line first,
was DQ’ed at post race inspection. Lensing picked up the feature win, his
first and so far only career ASALMS victory for the Roscoe, Illinois pilot.
Stremme was second over Wilberg, Andrew Morrissey, and current ASALMS
Challenge Division Points Leader, Chad Wood rounded out the Top Five.
The third and last ASALMS event was the Bryden Motor 100 held last season on
May 27, 2005, hometown favorite, Bryan Reffner showed the quick way in his
first career ASALMS start as the Stevens Point, Wisconsin veteran, who has
turned many laps around the ½ mile high-banks over his career, took the win
ahead of an ailing 2005 ASALMS Champion, Stephen Leicht.
Leicht experienced a dropped valve with 20 laps to go, but he hung on for a
runner-up showing. Landon Cassill finished a strong third over Wilberg, who
recorded his third straight finish in three ASALMS starts of at least a fourth
place finish. Wilberg has two thirds and a fourth in the three ASALMS events
ran at Madison! Ryan Carlson would complete the Top Five.
During the 2005 season, Orfordville, Wisconsin veteran, Bobby Wilberg made
history when he won both the Super Late Models and ASA Late Models track
championships in the same season. Wilberg will be back to defend his title in
the ASA Late Models as the Madison speed plant has dropped the Supers as a
regular division for 2006.
For the 2006 season, Madison International Speedway runs on Friday nights
beginning on May 19th featuring the ASA Late Model division as the premiere
class of cars on the big ½ mile high-banked paved oval. In addition, Limited
Late Models will also take to the ½ mile while the Sportsman, Hobby Stocks,
and Bandits run on the adjoining 1/4 mile on Friday nights.
