Bires Set For ASALMS Northern Division Event At LGR

Pewaukee, Wisconsin (05/18/2006): Holding a track record is pretty darn impressive. Considering how many drivers race at short tracks all across the country every Saturday night, to keep one for six years is even more of a feat. Kelly Bires might only be 21 years old, but he can make that claim.

“We are racing at Lake Geneva Raceway on May 20th with the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division race,” said Bires. “I have raced at Lake Geneva before, but I was really young. It was when I raced in the Allison Legacy Series. When I raced there when I was younger, I had the track record, and I think that I still may have it, but that was when I was in a Legacy car.”

The Lake Geneva race will end a period of downtime for the WalTom Racing team that Bires is a part of. “It is our first race in quite a while; I think it’s been about two months since we have been out on the track racing.”

Two months off may seem like a nice vacation for some, but for a driver any time not spent in the car racing is typically spent preparing the car for the next racing venture.

“We have been working on the car a lot in the shop,” said Bires. “We have been doing some tests. We tested Lake Geneva about a week and a half ago and then we tested Madison last weekend, so we have been pretty busy. We have been trying to get the cars ready for those tests and then we have been building a fifth car too.

“We were really good at the Lake Geneva test. I don’t think it can be much better than what we were running. We are going to make a couple of adjustments before we go back, but we were running as fast as the Super Late Models run at that track. We should be pretty decent.”

Bires has been competing in the televised ASALMS Challenge Division so far this year, and is tied for second in points. The ASALMS Challenge Division has held races all across the country including Nashville and San Antonio and while this upcoming race is not a Challenge event, he is nevertheless excited to be heading home.

“Lake Geneva is only about an hour from our shop,” said Bires. “It’s probably going to be the closest track that we get to race on next to The Milwaukee Mile. There will be a lot of people, family and friends coming to that race.”

“Plus our owners, Tom and Wally, both have lake houses up at Lake Geneva.” Bires added. “So I am sure it will be a big deal for Texor, our sponsor and their friends and family will be there too. It would be a good race to run well at.”

And there are always records to try and set as well. “I don’t think the ASALMS have ever been there before, (This will be the first and only appearance for the ASALMS, the track is closing at the conclusion of this season) so I don’t think there is a track record to beat, but maybe we could set one. I definitely think that we will be top three material for sure.” He ended.
