the trip to the Wisconsin/Illinois bordered facility for what will be a
historic event in the track’s long history!
St. Louis, Missouri teenager, Jesse Smith, who finished second to Jack Smith
(No Relation) at I-70, hopes to keep his momentum going from his career high
finish in the ASALMS Northern Division’s inaugural event. He’ll have to
deal with the likes of Jason Setser, Peter Cozzolino, Joe Ross, Jenny White,
Jeff Bozell, and Ryan Carlson, just to name a few.
In addition, a host of Wisconsin/Illinois based pilots will be trying to hold
off the traveling invaders from the Northern Division in addition to local
favorites, who will be abound led by former multi-time track champion, Rick
Corso and 2005 GM Performance Part Shootout Champion in what is now the ASALMS
Challenge Division, Mark Hartline.
Corso, from near-by McHenry, Illinois veteran hopes to make the hometown fans
happy in his ASALMS debut. Amongst the rest of the Wisconsin/Illinois
contingent include; Travis Dassow, Jamie Dorsey, Nathan Haseleu, Eddie
Hoffman, Bill Knippenberg Jr., Frank Kreyer, Dan Lensing, Mike Tetzlaff, Jason
Tyler, and current ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, Chad Wood.
Des Moines, Iowa freshman, Michael Annett leads a strong cast of Rookie of the
Year contenders that also includes, Brothers Derek and Nick Neville as well as
Steve Vaughn, Alison Quick, and Hales Corners, Wisconsin driver, Jason
Taghikhani.
Lake Geneva Raceway opened it front gates in 1962 as a 1/4 mile
state-of-the-art drag strip. It operated that way until 1966 when the
promoters of the time decided to broaden the scope of their operation with a
1/4 mile paved oval.
On the first night of operation on the new surface, the fans were treated to a
thrill as Wisconsin legend, Pedro Roehl captured the final that evening. The
trophy that was awarded that night was returned to the current owners in 1990
and will be awarded to the Super Late Model champion at the end of the 2006
season.
History turned to change as in 1984 as Kevin Dawson purchased the aging
facility. A number of improvements and reparations took place at the track,
which culminated in the extensive modification to the surface in 1990.
The old 1/4 mile was lengthened to a true 1/3 mile facility. Combining portion
of the old pavement and all new progressively banked corners has made for
great finishes and great races.
The new layout laid down in 1990, was specifically designed to improve
side-by-side racing at the historic oval. The progressive banking is different
at both ends of the track and is different from the front straight and the
back as well. Over the years, it’s really made for close racing in a Late
Model-style car such as the ASA Late Model Series.
