Ryan Takes Texas By Storm Winning The Alamo 200

San Antonio, Texas (04/01/2006): The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division
has completed the Hill Country Satellite DirecTV Alamo 200 Presented by
Express Lube race weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
The ASALMS Challenge Division’s race number two of the 2006 season proved
once again to the fans of the ASALMS that the series “Where Champions
Race” is the premiere traveling series in the country!
A standing room only crowd, the biggest in the tracks 30 year history
witnessed a show for the ages as Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title
contender, Jake Ryan gave the cars and stars of the ASALMS a good old
fashioned “Texas whipping” en route to his first career feature win in
only his second start!
During pre-race ceremonies, San Antonio (TX) Speedway Promoter, Terry
Dickerson put up a $1000 bonus to the first two qualifiers in Texas Speed
Zone.com Qualifying. Jake Ryan and Landon Cassill. Only Cassill accepted the
challenge of starting shot gun on the field in an attempt to collect the extra
$1000 in addition to the $10,000 that was on the line.
As the field was given the one lap to go signal to begin the 200-lap feature,
pole-sitter, Keeton Hanks and fellow front row starter, Pete Vanderwyst
collided heading into Turn Two resulting in heavy damage to Hanks’ Chevrolet
Monte Carlo. The Auburn, Kentucky driver was unable to start the event!
This moved Kris Stump to the pole position and the Tipp City, Ohio driver took
full advantage of the April Fools Day gift and took the early lead while the
rest of the field settled in behind him.
Cassill’s bid for the bonus money ended on lap 29 when Cassill and Fort
Worth, Texas pilot, J.C. Umscheid touched heading into Turn Three, sending
Cassill hard into the Turns 3-4 wall! Cassill was ok and came back out for 23
more laps late in the race before eventually parking his Ford Fusion for the
evening in 24th spot.
Stump continued to set the pace as Texas Speed Zone.com Fast Qualifier, Jake
Ryan began his assault through the field. Soon Ryan found himself in second
spot and began reeling in Stump. On lap 67 Ryan dove underneath to take over
the lead. Ryan then proceeded to pull away from the pack and led the field
into the 10-minute break at halfway.
On the Lap 101 restart, Ryan again pulled away from the pack and opened up a
huge lead over the rest of the field. One of the 10 cautions on the evening
flew on Lap 130 when Vanderwyst, who was behind the wheel of Travis Dassow’s
back up ride for the weekend, slammed hard into the Turn three wall. The
Canadian veteran was ok but done for the evening.
14 laps later the major turning point of the evening occurred as hometown
favorite, Brandon Bendele, who started 15th was battling with Jay Middleton,
the ASALMS Southern Division Points Leader for sixth when the two touched
heading into Turn Three and the impact sent them both hard into the Turn Three
wall.
In the process, ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, heading into the
Alamo 200 weekend, Eddie Hoffman, who was in eighth, had no where to go and
slammed into the back of both Bendele and Middleton. All three were done for
the evening knocking out three top competitors!
All the while, Ryan would continue to set a torrid pace and after the last
caution on lap 158 for a spinning Ryan Carlson, who ended up in the inside
front stretch wall, Ryan would show no signs of letting up.
Ryan, a contender for the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title, would
go on to lead the rest of the way and the Farmington, Minnesota driver would
pick his first career feature win in the Hill Country Satellite DirecTV Alamo
200 Presented by Express Lube!
The Gopher State Freshman picked up a cool $10,000 for his efforts in addition
to an authentic Cowboy Hay, Ostrich Boots, and Texas Belt Buckle from the San
Antonio Speedway President and Promoter, Terry Dickerson.
Stump would finish a strong second over Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie Points
Leader going into the weekend, Kelly Bires. Chad Wood would come home fourth
over Charlie Menard, Colt James the highest finishing driver from the Lone
Star State in sixth, Travis Dassow, Ken Wills, Brent Downey, and Jeff
VanOudenhoven would complete the Top 10.
Earlier in the evening, Ryan would win his second straight Texas Speed
Zone.com Fast Qualifier award with a lap measured at 18.412 which equaled out
to 97.762 MPH. Also earlier in the evening, Eddy Wallace would win the GM
Performance Parts Shootout.
The crown jewel of the ASALMS, the Challenge Division will now take eight
weeks off to allow for the companion Northern and Southern Divisions’ to get
their 2006 seasons off and running.
The next event for the ASALMS is for the ASALMS Southern Division, who returns
to action after a month off this Saturday April 8th at the Shenandoah (VA)
Speedway in Shenandoah, Virginia for the Virginia 100.
The Southern Division will also end the month of April on Saturday April 29th
at the Beech Bend (KY) Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky for the
running of the Beech Bend 100.
The all-new ASA Late Model Series Northern Division will hold its’ inaugural
event on Saturday May 6th at the wicked fast ½ mile of the I-70 (MO) Speedway
outside of Kansas City in Odessa, Missouri for the Show-Me 100.
The ASALMS Southern Division returns to action on Friday May 12th at another
wicked fast ½ mile. This time the Five Flags (FL) Speedway in Pensacola,
Florida will host the Pensacola 100.
The first race weekend where both the Northern and Southern division stars are
both in action on the same day comes on Saturday May 20th.
The Northern Division stars make their one and only appearance at the Lake
Geneva (WI) Speedway on Saturday May 20th for the Lake Geneva 100. That same
day the Southern Division will be down South at the famed Hickory (NC) Motor
Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina for the Hickory 100.
Finally to complete the month of May, the televised ASALMS Challenge Division
returns to action over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. Friday and Saturday
May 26-27 the cars and stars will take on the best the state of Wisconsin has
to offer at the Madison (WI) International Speedway outside of Madison, in
Oregon, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin 200 will kick off the holiday weekend that will also see the
teams pull double duty over the same weekend. After the Madison Challenge
Division event, the ASALMS Northern Division will complete the Memorial Day
holiday weekend on Sunday and Monday May 28-29 at the Grundy County (IL)
Speedway for the George Appleton Memorial.
Also of note, the ASALMS Northern Division has announced a schedule change.
The previously announced June 17th date at the Jennerstown (PA) Speedway in
Jennerstown, Pennsylvania has been moved. The new date for the Jennerstown 100
is now on Saturday September 16th.
