Nashville, Tennessee (03/18/2006): The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division has completed the first event of the 2006 season at the Music City (TN) Motorplex in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Waffle House 200 Presented by Dollar General was the ASALMS fist foray into the uncharted waters of a distance longer than 100 laps. 52 of the premiere drivers in the country met up at the famed Tennessee State Fairgrounds oval.

Standing in victory lane was Wheaton, Illinois veteran, Eddie Hoffman, who took the lead on lap 11 and led the remaining 190 laps enroute to his first career ASALMS victory and a prestigious Barry Clapp originally designed Copley Guitar.

Chad Wood and Hoffman led a star studded 30-car field to chief starter, Tom Powell’s green flag to begin the deuce century grind. Things happen in a hurry at the Nashville, Tennessee speed plant and heading into turn one chaos ensued resulting in a multi-car pile-up.

In the end, seven cars received damage including perennial title contenders, Jason Dietsch, Charlie Menard, and Jack Smith. Dietsch was done, Menard came out later several laps down, and Smith restarted at the rear.

On the restart, Wood beat out Hoffman to the first corner to take the initial lead. Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title contender, Kelly Bires settled in behind the leaders and when Hoffman worked his way around Wood for the lead on lap 11, Bires followed suit and settled into second.

On lap 69 Bires spun in the backstretch to bring out the second of nine cautions thrown during the evening. Quick Car Fast Qualifier, Jake Ryan, another Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie title contender, soon worked his way into second spot after battling with 2005 Rookie of the Year, Brian Campbell, and shadowed Hoffman into the 10-minute break at the 100-lap mark.

On the restart to begin the second half of the 200-lap affair, Ryan looked high and low trying to figure out a way around the crafty Hoffman. The most serious incident of the night occurred on lap 156 when Frank Kreyer, who earlier in the evening won the GM Performance Parts Shootout, slammed hard into the turn three wall.

Kreyer was ok but done for the evening, the accident also took out Jeff VanOudenhoven. On the restart, Ryan again hounded Hoffman, but then had to deal with Coopersville, Michigan veteran, Butch Miller, who had quietly worked his way up to third from his 11th starting spot.

It got heated on lap 183 when Ryan and Miller touched sending Miller into the inside backstretch wall, and all done for the evening. This put Campbell back into second spot and on the final restart, Campbell tried to keep pace with Hoffman.

Hoffman was too strong however as the Wheaton, Illinois veteran would hang on to post his first career ASALMS Feature win!

Campbell settled for second as Wood, Bires, Bo Miller, Jack Smith from 24th, Bobby Parsley, Landon Cassill, Ryan, and Travis Dassow completed the Top 10.

Earlier in the evening, Ryan won the Quick Car Racing Products Fast Qualifier award over the 52 cars on hand with an 18,741. Kreyer won the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout over Dan Lensing, Ken Wills, Jim Ross, and John Bolen, the Top Five.

The next event for the ASALMS Challenge Division is on Friday March 31st and Saturday April 1st at the San Antonio (TX) Speedway in San Antonio, Texas for the running of the Alamo 200.
