Heiss Transitions From Open Wheels To ASALMS in 2006

Lexington, Michigan (01/31/2006): There are drivers from all walks of life who either call home or are looking to become part of the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts family. 

The ASALMS, “Where Champions Race” has become a melting pot of so many different teams over the years and the 2006 season looks to become an even bigger family!

Drivers from all different types of racing are looking into the ASALMS as the next logical step in their racing career. Prairie State driver, Mike Heiss is no exception. The open wheeled Sprints and Midget star on both dirt and pavement facilities throughout the Midwest has announced his intentions for the 2006 season an they include the jump into the ASALMS. 

For the 2006 season, Mike Heiss will be running the full schedule of events in the ASALMS Northern Division with hopes of winning the Rookie of the Year award. In addition, the Ottawa, Illinois pilot will also run select events in the televised ASALMS Challenge Division in addition to as many events as possible at his home track of the Grundy County (IL) Speedway.

“We’re going to run the full Northern Division schedule, hopefully get the Rookie of the Year title, and finish at least in the Top 10 in the final points!” Offered Heiss as he discussed his 2006 racing schedule. “The competitive nature of the ASALMS is a good fit for me and I look forward to this season, I can’t wait!” Heiss added. 

2005 proved to be a very successful season in both Late Models and Midgets competition for Heiss as he would win his first career feature in a Late Model and then went out and won a Midget feature later, both at Grundy County. Something that has never been done in the history of the speedway! 

Heiss would go on to win one more Late Model feature in 2005 while also running his Midget full-time. He would finish sixth in the UMARA Midgets Points Standings while picking up a 12th place finish in Grundy County Late Models competition. 

“Mike has a ton of open wheel USAC Midget experience and from what I have seen show’s no fear.” Stated ASALMS Northern Division Director, Steve Einhaus. “Mike has very good equipment and he has picked up real well on the full body race cars. He’ll be capable no matter where he goes to race.” Einhaus added.

Heiss began his racing career in Open Wheeled Midgets and Sprints racing on both dirt and pavement facilities in 2001. In his rookie season, Heiss won three features, all in Sprint Cars and finished fifth in the UMARA Sprints Series Points Standings. Heiss’ car was also voted “Best Appearing Car” in the series.

In 2002, Heiss chalked up three more feature wins and finished fifth in UMARA Sprint Series Points as well as seventh in the UMARA National Midget Points Standings. He also broke the track record in a non winged sprint car at his home track of the Grundy County (IL) Speedway and was voted Most Improved Driver in UMARA Sprints Series competition.

The 2003 season saw Heiss devote the season strictly to the Midget Racing scene and was rewarded with an astounding 13 Top Five finishes which resulted in Heiss finishing seventh in the UMARA Midget Series. Heiss again won the award for “Best Appearing Car” award.

In 2004, Heiss continued running a Midget car while also beginning his racing career in a Late Model. In the Midgets, he again finished seventh in the UMARA Midgets Series. While in his rookie season in a Late Model, Heiss finished in 15th place in the points at the Grundy County (IL) Speedway in his Late Model. Heiss adapted to the full bodied cars quickly as he garnered four Top 10 finishes his rookie season. 

For the 2006 season, Mike Heiss will be running the full schedule of events in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division with hopes of winning the Rookie of the Year award, given to the Northern Division’s top first year driver. In addition, Heiss will also run select events in the televised ASALMS Challenge division.

While running in the ASALMS, Heiss will also attempt to run as many shows as possible at his home track of the Grundy County (IL) Speedway. Sight of Race Number three on the 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Schedule on Memorial Day Monday, May 29th. 

In addition, Heiss looks to make select appearances in Late Models competition at the near-by Illiana (IN) Motor Speedway as well as the ASA Late Model Division at the Madison (WI) International Speedway.

Heiss hasn’t forgotten his racing roots! He will also return to where his career began by running a limited schedule in the open wheeled USAC and UMARA Midgets Series’ as well as select events with the USAC Sprints Series, all of which will host events on both dirt and pavement facilities.

For the 2006 season, Heiss will carry limited sponsorship on the side of his Dodge Charger from Heiss Welding, as well as Lotz Trucking, Jack Boehm Trucking, American Fuel Economy, and Heiss Racing.
